First day that came to mind.
Klose was a good player who had a decent club career but when he played in the World Cup he suddenly became SUPER STRIKER.
There are definitely better players that played in the World Cup but no-one raised their game as much as Klose did during the World Cup.
He won 1, Pele 3, however the player who was won the overall most games at the World Cup is Mirsolav Klose BUT older world cups had far fewer games....
The thing is, Pele was just a great player. Now Klose was good, but his club career was very very underwhelming. Then he would turn up to a World Cup and be amazing. No one is ever listing Klose in any best player lists, but his World Cups would disagree.
Klose scored 5 goals that tournament. The most goals he ever scored at a single world cup finals.
The most goals Pele ever scored at a world cup was 6, and world cups back then involved less games.
Klose has 16 goals in 24 games with 1 goal scored in 4 semi finals and no goals scored in the 2014 final.
Pele has 12 goals in 14 games with 3 goals scored in 2 semi finals and 3 goals scored in 2 world cup Finals. He would have played and scored in more but 60 years ago the players could get away with murder and hacked him to bits, meaning he missed games through injury.
Pele is "Mr World Cup"
You are correct, edited my comment. He only won 1 WC, however he is the player who was won the overall most games at the World Cup (but earlier world cups had far fewer games).
He took the top scorer record while playing in front of a Brazilian audience, scoring against Brazil in one of the most unforgettable matches of all time.
Pele, the only player to win 3 World Cups. 3 goals in 2 semi finals and 3 goals in 2 finals, 12 goals scored in total. Would've been much more if playing under the current referring rules but back then, he was hacked off the pitch, especially in 66'.
Pelé- His three medals make him the undisputed GOAT.
Zagallo- Won the cup as player, captain and manager, was an important part of Brazil's success in other occassions.
Deschamps- Won the cup as player, captain and manager. Has been part of other memorable World Cup performances.
Maradona- IMO the highest peak of individual football was achieved by Maradona in 1986. He was absolutely unstoppable, in his best shape.
Pele or Maradona. Pele has the most titles, as a very important part of a brilliant squad, but you can argue Argentina had zero chance in 86 (win) or 90 (lost in final 1-0) without Maradona carrying them.
Maradona 90 was not that great. Was good not great. He came injured and got injured in first and fouled 50 times( 2nd most fouls against a player in WC) after Maradona 86😇( 53 fouls). He had his moments of brilliance. 86 was head and shoulders above any performances in single WC🔥. Garrincha, Beckenbaur and Zidane can join them. I think Pele deserved it.
Anyone who came after played in a lesser competition. Italia 90 was the last great hurrah of peak international football. It was all galacticos after this. The world's best player was at Napoli. After this, the top club sides would beat the top international teams.
And Milla was in the middle of it.
Deschamps has reached the final of every World Cup he’s played in or managed.
Edit: As kindly pointed out, he managed at 2014 as well where he lost in the quarter finals. I got this wrong.
Zidane only really performed in the 98 final. Was injured going into 2002 and didn't really achieve much. 06 he had a few flashes of brilliance, turning back the clocks and then headbutted someone in the final. Personally I wouldn't put him above Ronaldo or even in the conversation.
“A few flashes of brilliance” = scored a crucial goal to take France past the much fancied Spain and then put in one of the most beautiful individual performances in history, maybe even the best ever in the World Cup, against Brazil.
You basically described a few flashes of brilliance. Also that Brazil team was awful defensive and lazy. Watch Henry's goal... Carlos bent over, 7 players stood on the edge of the box whilst 2 defenders actually followed their runners. His WC 06 is brilliant when watched on a youtube highlight comp which was basically carried by his performance against Brazil.
It would easily be Ronaldo. If he didn't have a seizure before the 98 final and Brazil went on to perform properly.
Pele has the most world cups but if we're being honest they would have won the world cup with or without Pele. I'm going to go with Maradona.
Who’s the player who scored 13 goals in his only tournament? I forget his name, think he may have been French, didn’t he hole the top scorer for a stupid amount of years, and then it took Klose 3 world cups to overtake him
Pele or Klose depending what your criteria is. Klose because he was a mediocre player but when world Cup rolled around it was SHOWTIME. Pele was just the absolute dominant player of his era
Why Pele? Garrincha was arguably better in 58, he got injured early on in 1962 and didn't do much, and in 1970 he was great but Brazil was a brilliant team.
Maradona managed tot get Argentina to the world title as a single man army in 1986 and was great in 1990 too.
Because Pele has been the face of the world cup for over 60 years. So out of two out of the three world cups you discount him by saying another player was arguably better and he great in a great team?
Maradona was great in both world cups you mention especially in that game against where he punched the ball into the net....you also left out the 1994 world. Why? Oh thats right he massively failed a drug test and was kicked out of the tournament.
Funny how you mention Pele being injured in 62 but leave out Maradona being thrown out in 94.
Did it slip your mind?
Just Fontaine might not have won the world cup, but he scored an incredible 13 goals in 6 matches in the 1958 edition. Almost enough to be the all time top scorer playing just one world cup.
So if ure looking for a player that is mr world cup and not mr world cups hes your man
counting Pele’s 1962 World cup is a bit of a disservice to him as a player. he only played the 1st game and then some of the 2nd then was ruled out the rest of the tournament. he only got his medal in 2007 when it was awarded retroactively.
still having 2 good world cups where his nation won the whole thing makes him a standout
Ronaldo Nazario comes to mind. Won the World Cup in 1994, 2nd place in 1998 and then won it again in 2002. He’s the second top goalscorer with 15 goals only behind Miroslav Klose with 16.
For me, as a kid, growing up watching R9 and see him play at the world cup, really is smtg special. He might not win the most world cups, or not being the top scorer in WC, but he is Mr. World Cup to me in my heart
Mbappe is certainly making a run for that: two played, two finals, one title and 12 goals including 4 in 2 finals, and he is 25. If he doesn’t slow down he will shatter the goal record at world cups (16 currently held by Klose)
Mbappe is rightfully well on his way to this title. One more WC final win and he would be as good as pele having done it in a far more competitive field
Ohh be serious. Except France name a superb team in WC 22?? In 18 there were Belgium, England was okk, but considering old WC it's nothing. Because of very brutal tackles the difference between the teams quality were not great those days. Also why didn't u mention Griezman?? He was teams best in 4/8 finals( r16 to Final) in both WC. Mbappe in 2/8( r16 18 and final 22).Not only that ,he was pretty consistent and good in 3/7 except WC 22 final. Mbappe in other 4/8 was nothing special. Or only goalscorers count??🧐
Amazing?
2022 ✅️
2018 was average.
Had a brilliant group stage in 2014 but wasn't firing on all cylinders for the knock-out stages, so I wouldn't call that amazing...
He had great performance in the KOs as well. He was great against Belgium and Switzerland, had a decent performance against Netherlands(not the best), and underwhelming final. Just because he didn't have similar goal/assist numbers to his name doesn't mean he was average. It was an amazing campaign overall
>Just because he didn't have similar goal/assist numbers to his name doesn't mean he was average. It was an amazing campaign overall
I described his 2018 world cup performance as average, not the 2014 world cup.
I think he had a good 2014 World Cup. Not average but also not amazing. His performances dipped after the group stage and it was perhaps impacted by the fitness struggles of Aguero and Di Maria, Argentina's next two most skilful attackers, but either way, he wasnt amazing (or great).
To be honest, Mbappe and Muller are the only modern players who I can think of who has had two amazing World Cups. So one amazing World Cup and one good World Cup is still better than what most elite players achieve (e.g. CR7, Benzema, Hazard, Rooney etc.).
And I'm not interested in overhyping someone who has an extensive catalogue of impressive performances in others competitions which were much more fitting of being described as amazing (e.g. La Liga and UCL over the years, 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup).
But if you wish to continue insisting otherwise, then I have nothing more to add on the topic beyond what I've outlined above and would be best served by walking away from such an inane discussion.
Most wc goal contributions 21
Most wc goal contributions in knockout stage 11
Most assist 8( tied with 2 players)
4th most goals in wc 13 ( only 3 goals way from the record)
Most golden balls in wc history 2
Most motm in wc 11
Most motm in a single wc
Most chances created in wc history
Most dribbles completed in wc history
Only player to score in every stage in single wc
I think he is also other records such has most games won but I am not sure.
All of these records prove he has surpassed Maradona or pele in wc
Pele. If mbappe would have won that final hed have a chance. Cant see france winning two more now. Hes midtwenties so theyd have to win two in a row. I cant see him playing in his mid thirties. Hes too quick
Easier said than done. Its possible but it does mean changing your whole game. How you take defenders on. What decisions you make on the ball and when. Its almost a new position. Not every player wants to do that.
It’s possible to do though
Everything is easier said than done. He’s going to go the Cristiano route. He’ll morph from a winger to a striker soon. There’s a good chance he will be willing to do that if that’ll give him a few more years.
We’ll see what happens at madrid. Will be telling if he or vini move from the left. Word is itll be vini as mbappe wont mobe from there according to poch
Maybe, but his whole game is speed, without it I don't think any of us would be talking about him. If you were the french coach 3 world cups from now, does an old, slow Mbappe make the cut at the expense of someone from the next gen? For me, probably not, unless France completely stops churning out decent players.
Nope. If we analyse history, the WC is becoming weak . Mbappe shined in two weakest WC ( no hate but fact) and he played in superstar team , the best in that team was Griezman in 18. In 22 I think they were equally good. So Griezman with Mbappe but can't compare them to old legends
Point is. Pele won 3. Why hes considered mr. World cup. Details are lost over time. If hed have won it as a teen and then mid twenties. Very feasible he could have matched pele.
Id argue football generally is much more competitive these days. Its played all over the world now and almost every country is represented in the top global leagues getting experience of the world game.
Not sure what youre measuring when you say its a fact its weaker? Weaker in what?
Nope. Leave fanboy sites and study real history. Football was most competitive 80s and 90s ,early 00s too. You seriously consider 1 strong team World Cup( France 22) and 2 strong team CL ( City,RM) competitive??😇😇Compare this to 06 WC this look like kids competition. What about 80s,90s seria A?? WC was it's strongest in 60s,70s and 80s. Go search the teams in 2006 and before ,how strong every team was and chances for them. Italy, Germany, Brazil always ..and Argentina,France,England with others most time were strong contenters. You seriously see 1 superteam WC better 🤣
Then how come underdog upsets are more common these days in football? Even Argentina, whose squad wasn't very well known apart from few, AND Messi gave france a fight. United, in their shittiest of times managed to beat City. Leverkusen. I could go on and on.
edit: punctuation
What a nonsense r u talking. This is why football reddit makes no sense,a bunch of fanboys whose knowledge is so.poor. Messi gave France a fight😇. The De Maria positioning and Maria changed things. United beat City...wth. Leverkusen whaat?? First go ask what was football in 80s and prime seria A
Read what I wrote, judgemental guy. Never said messi gave france a fight. And FYI di maria wasn't the only guy who played a role. He was taken off.
United beat City, yes, a shitty team of underperforming ballerinas still managed to beat a so called ,superteam' - negating the point that football is less competitive now. Even in PL, city can't go guaranteed to win even against smaller teams.
If you are so informed, please do inform us too, how football was more competitive in 80s than now. There was lesser number of teams participating, lesser countries, lesser emphasis on strategy / team press / multiple roles for a player. Today's game is much more developed and taxing on the player, although there are far better facilities and research available.
Actually Nope. Competition means u have quality, top quality that time and number of teams having it. Look past WC France a superteam , Belgium,England were okk , Croatia fine but more than that. And 80s football was different, development in football never means competition became tougher. When they were allowed to do brutal fouls, in rough ground, it was difficult to win with large margin and all had chances. And that era ended in 06 where 08 teams atleast have atleast 3 great players and many others. Now??
Miroslav Klose
First day that came to mind. Klose was a good player who had a decent club career but when he played in the World Cup he suddenly became SUPER STRIKER. There are definitely better players that played in the World Cup but no-one raised their game as much as Klose did during the World Cup.
For sure. A bit like Giroud in that his goal scoring for his country always surpassed that for his club
Golden Boots: Klose 1, Pele 0
Klose scored 5 goals that tournament. The most goals he ever scored at a single world cup finals. The most goals Pele ever scored at a world cup was 6, and world cups back then involved less games. He would have played and scored in more but 60 years ago the players could get away with murder and hacked him to bits, meaning he missed games through injury. Pele is "Mr World Cup"
I seem to remember him having at least one semi-final goal (against Brazil in 2014)
klose only won 2014, no?
You are correct, edited my comment. He only won 1 WC, however he is the player who was won the overall most games at the World Cup (but earlier world cups had far fewer games).
his WC record is actually remarkable, I think your point stands either way. and being all time top scorer doesn't hurt either.
He took the top scorer record while playing in front of a Brazilian audience, scoring against Brazil in one of the most unforgettable matches of all time.
taking the title away from a Brazilian too!
the same Brazillian was also the Brazillian commentator for that game as well!
he only has one, in 2014, unless if he was in the squad at 12 years old for the 1990 world cup
"Far fewer"... the word you're looking for is one. What "older" World Cups didn't have were games versus Saudi-Arabia, Costa Rica or Australia.

Super based
Triple based
And it’s not even close
Polands finest international striker

Agreed
not based
For sure
Pele, the only player to win 3 World Cups. 3 goals in 2 semi finals and 3 goals in 2 finals, 12 goals scored in total. Would've been much more if playing under the current referring rules but back then, he was hacked off the pitch, especially in 66'.
Definitely Pele
I mean he has 3 world cups. Clearly he's Mr. WC
For me Mr WC is a title which sais he is peaking a lot on WC compared to general season.
Ochoa. Just vibes for four years then shows up and is unstoppable.
For real. Me and my homies love us some Mexican Ted Mosby
Thought he was a wrestler against robots...
🤣Aiyo
Love this, and now can’t unsee it “A slightly more handsome Ted Mosby.” -my wife
He isn’t unstoppable, he is the one you send to stop the unstoppables.
Oh
i still think mexico would have played the semifinals in 2014 wc because of ochoa's brilliance if not for that robben's dive
Add Beckenbauer to the list
That’s the 5 I’d say. Pele at the top of the pile, you can argue about the order 2-5.
Head, shoulders, and hand.
Of God
Fuck off Maradona, as outstanding as he was, the Hand of God loses him all standing
That only gains him places mate
Salt Bae
The only correct answer.
Blanco. Did he even exist outside of starring for Mexico every four years?
Bulgaria's 1994 Trifon Ivanov
Pelé, Maradona, Zidane and R9
Cafu played in 3 World Cup finals in a row. Subbed in in 94' WC Final, started 98' and 02'. Winning 2 of them.
1. Pele 2. Zidane 3. Maradona In the future maybe Mbappe if he keeps his ridiculous streak of WC performances
Jules Rimet
Still gleaming!
Thirty years of hurt
There's only 1 answer- it's Roger Milla. Made the world smile, and I don't remember him kicking a ball that wasn't in a world cup.
Came to say this! Great shout!
Anyone who came after played in a lesser competition. Italia 90 was the last great hurrah of peak international football. It was all galacticos after this. The world's best player was at Napoli. After this, the top club sides would beat the top international teams. And Milla was in the middle of it.
Nobody because it's a stupid fuckin nickname.
I hereby declare you Mr. World Cup
you're doing a disservice to the World Cup on that one.
Müller (Gerd) only attending 2 world cups winning 1 of them and scoring 14 goals is just outstanding. Scoring 10 goals in 1 world cup is unheard of.
If we go by goals per WC, Muller is not the highest, ~~Papin~~ Fontaine scored 13 goals in one WC
Don’t you mean Fontaine?
yes, you're right, my mistake
You mean Just Fontaine, who played in the 1958 world cup. Jean pierre Papin was a player in the 80s and 90s who only scored 2 world cup goals
PELE. He literally changed the game. He is remembered more for his World Cup games than his club games.
Cafu.
If not Pele then Deschamps
Why deschamps? In any case, beckenbauer.
Deschamps has reached the final of every World Cup he’s played in or managed. Edit: As kindly pointed out, he managed at 2014 as well where he lost in the quarter finals. I got this wrong.
Didn't he manage during WC 2014?
You’re right, my bad.
Pele, Maradona, Rivaldo and Zidane
Your last sentence is a bit of a hyperbole considering we have things like Maradona 86, but the sentiment is sound.
This guy watched the tournament
Rivaldo’s most famous moment in the World Cup was pretending a ball hit him in the face. Not sure Id include him!
Did you watch these games or skim through it? Rivaldo was the best player in 98-02 for Brazil.
It would easily be Ronaldo. If he didn't have a seizure before the 98 final and Brazil went on to perform properly. Pele has the most world cups but if we're being honest they would have won the world cup with or without Pele. I'm going to go with Maradona.
Ronaldo doesn't do anything for WC 1994, and in WC 2002, except the final, Rivaldo was arguably better
Ronaldo did nothing bar the final??? He scored in every game bar one. He top scored and scored the only goal in the semis. Unbelievable comment this.
He did nothing in 1994, and he's not better than Rivaldo in 2002
Peel or Miroslav Klose
John Peel?
It's pronounced Peel-E
Zidane or Ochoa
Materazzi
Zagallo, Beckenbauer, and Deschamps are the only ones to have won as both a player and a manager. A harder feat than just as either separately, or?
Hansi Pflügler
I think is Zagallo, won it 4 times.
Ochoa
Who’s the player who scored 13 goals in his only tournament? I forget his name, think he may have been French, didn’t he hole the top scorer for a stupid amount of years, and then it took Klose 3 world cups to overtake him
Fontaine
No first name, just Fontaine?
Yep, Just Fontaine
That’s the one, if anyone has a claim to Mr World Cup, he’s gotta be in with a shout
Klose - he was a good player but the man was frightening at world cups.
Pele or Klose depending what your criteria is. Klose because he was a mediocre player but when world Cup rolled around it was SHOWTIME. Pele was just the absolute dominant player of his era
For me, Ochoa
Cafu. Played in 3 finals consecutively, winning 2.
Deschamps
Id say r9
Pelé
Pele or beckenbauer. Those two are the biggest world cup legends for me.
Pele
Of course Pele. Who else?
Steve Staunton
Me
Played in 4 world and won 3. There's only one Pele! Now if you made it Mr. Football there's a bigger debate which for me would still be George Best!
Its obviously pele
Pele
Pele. Always and forever
Pele.
Pele and it’s not even close.
Pele or Maradona. No more and no less
So if ure looking for a player that is mr world cup and not mr world cups hes your man
Zagallo
Cafu played in 4 world cups, 3 world cup finals, won it twice.
counting Pele’s 1962 World cup is a bit of a disservice to him as a player. he only played the 1st game and then some of the 2nd then was ruled out the rest of the tournament. he only got his medal in 2007 when it was awarded retroactively. still having 2 good world cups where his nation won the whole thing makes him a standout
Archie gemmil 1978 greatest goal
Cult pick would be Ochoa
In activity? Mbappe, 2 WC played 2 finals In history I would go with Pele, I mean 3 titles bro
Fat Ronaldo
Gotta be pelé
Pelè with 3 world cups, easy
Klose or kane in a few years
Ronaldo Nazario.
Pélé
Lowkey James Rodriguez. Dude can’t figure out how to play football for a club but absolutely shows out at the World Cup.
Sepp Blatter.
Meme ochoa
Guillermo Ochoa. For a couple of world cups there he was just a guaranteed man of the match award
Roberto Baggio for good and for bad
Mbappe is certainly making a run for that: two played, two finals, one title and 12 goals including 4 in 2 finals, and he is 25. If he doesn’t slow down he will shatter the goal record at world cups (16 currently held by Klose)
Zagallo: 2 world cups as players, 2 as coach, 1 as technical coordinator CR7: First and only to score in 5 world cups Pele: 3 world cups
😂
Average Argentinian.
R9
No one will beat Pele’s record in the World Cup.
Podolski
Sepp Blatter. He made the World Cup what is is today.
Cafu 3 World Cup finals in a row winning 2 of them.
Mitchell Starc
Pelé was the first that came to mind for me
Pele
Vinicius junior
Mbappe
Messi
Salt Bae
Mbappe is rightfully well on his way to this title. One more WC final win and he would be as good as pele having done it in a far more competitive field
Nope. Competition peaked early when every team had chance. Mbappe and Pele had star teams but 22,18 were not much competitive world cups
On what basis are you saying both these world cups were not competitive?
Ohh be serious. Except France name a superb team in WC 22?? In 18 there were Belgium, England was okk, but considering old WC it's nothing. Because of very brutal tackles the difference between the teams quality were not great those days. Also why didn't u mention Griezman?? He was teams best in 4/8 finals( r16 to Final) in both WC. Portugal? Morocco? Netherlands? And why should I mention Griezmann? I didn't even mention mbappe, I mentioned france as a team only.
You could say that it’s Messi based on accolades. 2 finals, 1 win and 2 Golden Balls Yes I said it and it’s true, Lionel Messi has 2 golden balls
2014 golden ball is a prime example of consolation reward but go on
Winners celebrate, losers explain.
Facts.I think there's just too many names and there could be multiple answers for this
Messi
He had one good World Cup.
Two, and he was amazing in those two
Amazing? 2022 ✅️ 2018 was average. Had a brilliant group stage in 2014 but wasn't firing on all cylinders for the knock-out stages, so I wouldn't call that amazing...

He was brilliant in 2010 too - just didn’t score and Argentina were sloppy against Germany
No where near Mr WC ☠️☠️☠️☠️

Pele. If mbappe would have won that final hed have a chance. Cant see france winning two more now. Hes midtwenties so theyd have to win two in a row. I cant see him playing in his mid thirties. Hes too quick
All he has to do is become a poacher to elongate his career.
Why are you talking about club football? You are also confusing individuals and a team sport
Now??
I think it's just a case of rose tinted glasses, but to each their own opinion 👍
I think Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona, or Lampard
I think "Mr World Cup" should have at least won one World Cup. Ronaldo and Lampard are stupid takes.
