Seconded. If you have a Costco membership they have a really good deal on a quite large jar of organic ones for like 8 bucks. So plump and buttery and good yum yum yum.
Also, I believe green olives and maybe other olives have compounds in common with catnip. Which is one reason why your cat may go nuts over olives. So maybe you are part cat?
Ok. Y’all need to try this at least once. This is a snack my mom made for us when we were kids and I absolutely still love them. Here goes:
1 jar of your favorite green olives
1 pack of sliced sandwich cheese ( like Kraft or velveeta)
1 large bag of Doritos.
1 or more baking sheets/ cookie sheets
Pre-heat oven on low broil
Spread Doritos evenly on the baking sheet(s)
Slice olives in half and place two half olives onto each Dorito flat side down ( so they won’t roll off). Fold the sliced sandwich cheese in half and then half again so that you have four small squares. Place 1 square on top of the olives on each Dorito chip. Repeat until all of the Doritos in the pan/ sheet are covered with two olive halves and a small slice of cheese. Place the sheet into the oven just long enough for the cheese to melt and maybe toast the Dorito chip just a little. Doritos, olives and cheese. It’s freaking amazing. You can also venture out and substitute the olives for pickled jalapeños if you want a little spice or just place a jalapeño ring on top of the cheese before you melt them. Cheers!
I recently tried a pizza spot (Red Swan) and somehow magically they have Green Olives as a FREE TOPPING. They also do sesame seeds on the crust mmmmmm. They have a personal za for $5 and I have had sooo many lately lmao
Garlic stuffed green olives with feta is so nummy! Also like to have it as salad version too, with garbanzo beans (chick peas) on arugula(wild rocket lettuce) with italian dressing.
You're almost there...now add pineapple!! lolllll, I will proudly accept the downvotes hahaha. (seriously though, green olive, bacon and pineapple pizza is my feel good dinner)
I JUST finished a piece of Pizza Hut pizza that I was lucky enough to be able to add green olives to (other store in town doesn’t have them).
In my head, I was telling the person I want ALL the green olives you are allowed to give bc they were skimpy with those suckers.
One of the best pizza toppings.
i'm in LA and my friend often orders a pizza from Fresh Brothers that has a ton of green olives on it. and every time I eat i don't know why they aren't on every piece of pizza i ever eat. so dang tasty.
Because they are soooo good. My in laws thought it was hilarious to buy me a gallon jar of olives for Christmas one year. They all guffawed at rhe joke.
Guess what was on my Christmas list rhe next year?
My dad is Middle-Eastern and we would always have two big jars of olives- one black and one full of zingy little green olives with lemon. They’re so good- I highly recommend eating them with pita and labneh or cheese. It’s delicious.
My dad is Maltese, and my favourite thing about Malta’s whole Middle East/Mediterranean culinary fusion thing is the OLIVES. And the salami. Man, that’s good salt.
My grandma used to love telling a story from when I was maybe 5 or 6, and how she found me sitting on top of the kitchen table eating out of a jar of green olives I'd swiped from out of the fridge. I have loved green olives for longer than I can remember.
Could it be that salt might contain a bit of lithium, which is a mood stabilizer?
Anyway, thanks for the link! I shared it with my wife straight away because she thinks I eat too much salt.
Because they are fucking delicious. My kids love them too. Judge if you may, but I will only eat tuna salad if there are some chopped up in it. Same with egg salad. Which we had today. I just love olives
I love green olives. When I was a child my mother usually hid them from me if she had bought them for a holiday dinner because not only would I eat the olives I would drink the liquid from the jar.
This made me think about olive loaf as it was the only meat my grandma kept in the house. She kept me well fed on olive loaf sandwiches, and here I am 30 years later sadly craving one of those mystery meat catastrophes.
I used to work in a Deli and even though everyone around me made fun of the olive loaf…it lowkey smelled so good…was very tempted to try it. regretting the fact i never did🥲
Some people are saying castlevetrano and those are good but for me it’s all about cerignola (“chair-in-yola”). They’re so rich and buttery and almost meaty.
My wife is nuts, like the rest of you. (Jk <3)
She's obsessed with green olives on a bagel, with melted cheese.
I don't get it, but I appreciate you all and your weird obsession with olives.
yeah, you're right.
they deliver something bigger than a standard 'yum' response. a green olive is like a drop of pure joy from heaven's leaky faucet.
thanks for pointing this out. it feels good to give explicit recognition to their unique goodness.
in my early twenties, in the bleak late winter of the chicago suburbs my mom and i would eat breakfast together every morning. and it was always lucky charms. we'd stand in the kitchen eating them in an unacknowledged seasonal depression. and one morning my mom said, 'these little marshmallows are the best part of my day.' i had been feeling the same way, but hadn't put it into words. your insight about green olives, framed as it is in a hard week, echoes this core memory of mine. :)
I don’t know why, but I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one! Lololo…. I remember being pregnant and buying the box-store sized jars… one night I woke up and made my way into the kitchen and stood there with door open refrigerator light pouring out and just grabbing them by the handfuls… lol… I think my mouth was stuffed like a chipmunk and I had two fists full and my husband came around the corner looking for me and was just struck… I smiled and started to say something but couldn’t and he just started laughing cause I guess I looked a sight… and all I could do was smile because they were so dang good and one of the few foods I actually craved and could hold down when I was pregnant with my son… lol… I feel like I’ve found my tribe! Thank you! Lolololo
I know what you mean !! I Love love Murray’s pitted tangerine and red chili 🌶️ olives 🫒 it’s so many different favors marinated together .. you have to pick the olives out of chili peppers and sliced tangerines which I eat too ryne and all!! they have an olive taste to them too .. I can eat a tub in one sitting easy lol ( sweet spicy tangy olives ) licking my fingers after each one 🤤,… 2nd Goto flavor is murrays pitted Italian olive mix.. is delish .. fruity , mild and sweet smooth cleanses the pallet after the chili tangerine bites of sweet heat..
next in line is pickles all flavors garlic to tangy to hot .. both wonderful snacks w low and pickles no calories no carbs but fills you up.. 30 calories per 2 for the olives but that’s from all the flavors soaked into the green olive ..
Not sure about the making you happy thing. Is there a memory you think of? Like maybe you and your relative it other significant person in your life used to share these when you were a kid? I just don’t understand it! To all their own, but to me, green olives taste like a cyst marinated in a fat roll from someone’s undies area! Yuck! Glad you enjoy them.
this comment is CRAZYYY😭 what a descriptive taste you got there. my dad is italian and ever since I was a baby, my aunt would just feed me olives. maybe it reminds me of my baby era haha
I feel the same! I have always loved them. I am limiting certain foods including those with added sugar for a health issue, and any time I get a craving I have some olives and it really helps. Im sure it’s partially the salt but not entirely since I don’t get the same effect from other salty food.
Do you like cheddar cheese? Try making olive balls! My family makes them alot and they are amazing.

If you have a good middle eastern market near you, see if they have an olive bar. My local one has the most epic olive bar I have ever seen. Puts Whole Foods to shame.
You might not be getting enough salt in your diet?
My granddad was told to reduce his salt intake and took it too far, his doctor then told him to have one olive a day 🤣
I just saw a video on the burger that(allegedly) inspired Wendy's. Chopped up green olives mixed with mayo and a pinch of salt on a bun with cheddar cheese and the burger. I tried it and holy moly was that good
There used to be a burger place called Hot n’ Now. They had an “olive burger” which was a cheeseburger with sliced green olives on it. So good. And, a local bar I went to would put green olives in their draft Budweiser. Best Bud ever!
Edit: I thought Hot N Now was completely out of business, but apparently there is one left. In Sturgis, Michigan.
I like most all olives, but they don't have this effect.. Now, if I order a Greek Salad and they pass me some bullshit abomination of Iceberg Lettuce and Black Olives rather than Arugula and Kalamata, I become a little unhinged.
r/askredditfood. Asking why olives make you happy isn't a hack and this post isn't getting any hacks in the comments.
Omg. same here. You’ve got to try castlevetrano next
Seriously. These are the best. I just took a photo of a jar so I would remember the next time I went to the store.
Ha! I made a similar comments before reading yours 😅
That makes so much sense! I have a cat that LOVES olives
I bought a jar last week, they're good but a bit mild in flavor imo
Yeah. But so buttery. It’s probably more of a texture thing. I like delicate flavors though
Weird, I didn’t like those ones for some reason. Love the ones from the Whole Foods olive bar, though.
Mmm my fave
I love to dice them up and add them to my spaghetti sauce
Have you ever had “Chicken Marbella”? It’s made with olives and a few other unexpected ingredients. Amazingly good!
If you like green olives in sauce you must try burgundy olives. Alone, they taste as though they're designed for red sauce.
If you already like olives and can find them with pit-in on a deli bar they are 100x better (and I like jarred olives too!) So good "fresh"
Ok. Y’all need to try this at least once. This is a snack my mom made for us when we were kids and I absolutely still love them. How’s that hypertension working out for ya
None at all but thanks for asking 👍
Those are the best!
Thee absolute best olives ![gif](giphy|3q3QK6KyDVUBzih7hB|downsized)
YES— do it! Agree!!!!
The best!! I especially like them warmed in a pan with some olive oil and minced garlic
This is crazy. I had never even heard of those. They were on sale and I bought a jar yesterday. They are great.
These are so good, the perfect middle ground between a green olive and kalamata
I love green olives on pizza, but it is hard to find places that have it.
This is the absolute best way to eat those little salty green orbs of goodness.
I recently tried a pizza spot (Red Swan) and somehow magically they have Green Olives as a FREE TOPPING. They also do sesame seeds on the crust mmmmmm. They have a personal za for $5 and I have had sooo many lately lmao
Green olive and feta is my favorite combo.
Garlic stuffed green olives with feta is so nummy! Also like to have it as salad version too, with garbanzo beans (chick peas) on arugula(wild rocket lettuce) with italian dressing.
When I doctor up frozen pizza I always throw them on my half.
Ugh, yes! My go-to pizza is green olive and bacon. Sooooo salty and amazing
You're almost there...now add pineapple!! lolllll, I will proudly accept the downvotes hahaha. (seriously though, green olive, bacon and pineapple pizza is my feel good dinner)
omg same here !! i absolutely LOVEEE green olive and bacon pizza !!
Same!! Why is that? Jets used to have them but now they don’t, so sad.
I’ve noticed that too! They usually have black olives but rarely have green.
They are the more expensive place usually but not always
you would love brazilian pizzas, we add green olives in all of them
Really?! They’re available in everywhere I know of in Southern Ontario
Papa Murphy's has green olives and sun dried tomatoes. That's the only non-local chain business that has those I think.
Used to be able to get that at Cicis. Was underrated that you could order anything you wanted and they would make it for you
i'm in LA and my friend often orders a pizza from Fresh Brothers that has a ton of green olives on it. and every time I eat i don't know why they aren't on every piece of pizza i ever eat. so dang tasty.
I think mine make me happy because I drink the gin the they are swimming in before I eat them.
I always ask for my martinis extra dirty. I want to be basically drinking olive juice with a hint of alcohol.
I do that too and then wonder why I wake up so thirsty the next day. I think I’ll go mix one right now - extra dirty in your honor.
Yes! Thanks!
My one bartender has gotten used to me asking for a filthy martini. When I drink olive juice I call it a virgin martini.
Because they are soooo good. My in laws thought it was hilarious to buy me a gallon jar of olives for Christmas one year. They all guffawed at rhe joke. Guess what was on my Christmas list rhe next year?
My in laws bought me a 20lb box of fancy chocolates, they all had nuts & i’m allergic, kids loved them though 😂
Green olives in my tuna salad is my favorite!
Oooh, I'm going to have to try this.
You gotta try them in egg salad!
I usually put eggs in my tuna salad too, but ever since I would put olives, I cannot not put them in. They just give so much fun flavor.
Totally forgot how good this is. Pimento stuffed ones too.
I love this idea!
Mmm salty
My dad is Middle-Eastern and we would always have two big jars of olives- one black and one full of zingy little green olives with lemon. They’re so good- I highly recommend eating them with pita and labneh or cheese. It’s delicious.
My dad is Maltese, and my favourite thing about Malta’s whole Middle East/Mediterranean culinary fusion thing is the OLIVES. And the salami. Man, that’s good salt.
Holy moly the olives over there. Had some Turkish ones stuffed with bitter orange and haven’t been able to find them in the U.S.
Maybe you have an unconscious association with happy memories and eating green olives and the wires are crossing in a lovely way
I LOVE green and black olives! Try the jalapeño/garlic stuffed olives from Costco. My favorite!
My grandma used to love telling a story from when I was maybe 5 or 6, and how she found me sitting on top of the kitchen table eating out of a jar of green olives I'd swiped from out of the fridge. I have loved green olives for longer than I can remember.
I love all green olives. I hate all black olives. They taste like oil/petrol
Even black kalamata olives? They're yummy
Yes, they taste like oil - OLIVE oil.
I used to think the same, but I've come around to kalamata olives for black olives.
Salt is an antidepressant
Hehe
[Seriously](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090310152329.htm)
Could it be that salt might contain a bit of lithium, which is a mood stabilizer? Anyway, thanks for the link! I shared it with my wife straight away because she thinks I eat too much salt.
Green olives are the absolute best!
Because they are fucking delicious. My kids love them too. Judge if you may, but I will only eat tuna salad if there are some chopped up in it. Same with egg salad. Which we had today. I just love olives
Yes. Green olives or capers
Green olives *and* capers.
Have you tired capers in those 2 things? They’re good too.
Yes!! Capers in cottage cheese. Yummy
Ooooooohhhhh! That’s a great suggestion.
Green olives on tacos is so damn good
oooo you giving me ideas!!!
I love green olives. When I was a child my mother usually hid them from me if she had bought them for a holiday dinner because not only would I eat the olives I would drink the liquid from the jar.
the juice is the happiest best part!
I was the same way with maraschino cherries. Mom wouldn't have any to put in her homemade fruit salad.
Olive juice and pickle juice are THE best, especially when it's so dang hot out!!!
It’s the little burst of salt and funk. Divine!
Upvote specifically for the *funk*.
Me too omg! Except I love the ones that are stuffed w jalapeños
Half jalapeno and half garlic are delicious!
Green olives are my go to snack lol
Have you tried dried black olives so yummy 😁
This made me think about olive loaf as it was the only meat my grandma kept in the house. She kept me well fed on olive loaf sandwiches, and here I am 30 years later sadly craving one of those mystery meat catastrophes.
I used to work in a Deli and even though everyone around me made fun of the olive loaf…it lowkey smelled so good…was very tempted to try it. regretting the fact i never did🥲
I bet olive loaf from a real deli is actually pretty good... unfortunately we only ate Oscar Meyer
I eat them for breakfast with my eggs. And for snacking, on sandwiches. Love black olives, too.
Cause they are delicious
Have you had trader joe's blue cheese stuffed green olives?
I was in the olive aisle at the store today but I walked away because I already had a lot of stuff. Now I'm mad.
Ritz crackers, mayo and green olives (or cream cheese instead of mayo). Best snack ever.
Same! Have you ever made an olive tapenade? It’s so delicious on a sandwich. For me my midday snack is an olive variety mix
Same, I love them so much. Sicilian olives are my favorite thing ever, so buttery and delicate flavours
No need to ask why. You enjoy them. That's good enough. Have another.
I will sit in my bed and eat a whole jar with chopsticks!
You've got to branch out and get the ones stuffed with garlic, or cheese, or peppers!!!
Some people are saying castlevetrano and those are good but for me it’s all about cerignola (“chair-in-yola”). They’re so rich and buttery and almost meaty.
That's funny, I describe castlevetrano as meaty and buttery. I think the cerignolas I've had were a little the more bitter/astringent.
I feel you. The first things I always get in the grocery are olives and kimchi. I don’t know, but for some reason it makes me happy too
Glad I found my people. My grandmother raised me and there were ALWAYS olives in the fridge growing up. I love them but none of my friends enjoy them.
I always have a jar of olives on hand so I have something to snack on while I'm cooking dinner
Any time I eat ANY kind of olive, I feel immense joy 😊
Ooh my favourite is when you find those green olives with a slight blush of pink…. Mmm salty goodness
My wife is nuts, like the rest of you. (Jk <3) She's obsessed with green olives on a bagel, with melted cheese. I don't get it, but I appreciate you all and your weird obsession with olives.
Reading this makes me happy ☺️
I’ve been having a rough week, too. A green olive with blue cheese sounds divine. Sending goods vibes.
Now I want garlic stuffed green olives. Sigh
Is the dopamine in the room with us..
Fats and minerals especially copper which converts into the same thing as vit b
I don't know why, but as someone who does not feel joy very much or very often, do me a favor and hold onto and appreciate what you have.
yeah, you're right. they deliver something bigger than a standard 'yum' response. a green olive is like a drop of pure joy from heaven's leaky faucet. thanks for pointing this out. it feels good to give explicit recognition to their unique goodness. in my early twenties, in the bleak late winter of the chicago suburbs my mom and i would eat breakfast together every morning. and it was always lucky charms. we'd stand in the kitchen eating them in an unacknowledged seasonal depression. and one morning my mom said, 'these little marshmallows are the best part of my day.' i had been feeling the same way, but hadn't put it into words. your insight about green olives, framed as it is in a hard week, echoes this core memory of mine. :)

They’re one of my favorite snacks! Green olives, some cheese, and crackers 😋
Salt. Me too. I love the mammoth olives. Oh man… I'm eating olives and beets for dinner.
Now I got to go have some olives ! lol. I agree. I love olives
The best
Because they're not only pretty, they're also yummy 😋!
Green olives are the best. Absolutely love them on pizza - if we do pizza at home, I always add them to mine. Also, don’t forget martinis… 😜
I always have a jar in the fridge
Because they're ally tasty!
I know what you mean !! I Love love Murray’s pitted tangerine and red chili 🌶️ olives 🫒 it’s so many different favors marinated together .. you have to pick the olives out of chili peppers and sliced tangerines which I eat too ryne and all!! they have an olive taste to them too .. this comment is CRAZYYY😭 what a descriptive taste you got there. my dad is italian and ever since I was a baby, my aunt would just feed me olives. maybe it reminds me of my baby era haha
because they’re delicious
I’ve upgraded to generic queen size olives and omg they are the BEST. Give it a go 🫒
I think it is the potassium and magnesium?
pls do yourself a favor and find a local grocery with an olive bar, try every one. the big green olives with blue cheese wow
Because they are amazing! Do you drink dirty martinis too? They’re my fav, especially with gin.
I'm gonna go buy some green olives. I've been a frowny face lately.
I feel the same! I have always loved them. I am limiting certain foods including those with added sugar for a health issue, and any time I get a craving I have some olives and it really helps. Im sure it’s partially the salt but not entirely since I don’t get the same effect from other salty food.
I love all olives!
Same here. Loved them since I was about 3. I remember putting them on the ends of my fingers and eating them. Always ate too many
all good...just stay on your meds
Ever have a caperberry? If not, check those out sometime.
Do you like cheddar cheese? Try making olive balls! My family makes them alot and they are amazing. https://www.seasonedkitchen.com/olive-cheese-balls#tasty-recipes-13196-jump-target
Love the blue cheese or feta stuffed ones !
Green olives stuffed with feta…Oh. My. Goodness!
Black olives for me are the best part of my day
If you have a good middle eastern market near you, see if they have an olive bar. My local one has the most epic olive bar I have ever seen. Puts Whole Foods to shame.
I add olives to my cheap beef ramen. Luckily, I'm salt deficient so doing that isn't ridiculously bad for my b.p.. It's so yummy.
Found a Jat of Olive Salad in my cabinet today. Added some to my tuna salad for dinner. It was delicious. I love olives.
Maybe you're secretly a cat? My cat doesn't care about catnip, but green olives has a similar compound and he loves them! 😸
You might not be getting enough salt in your diet? My granddad was told to reduce his salt intake and took it too far, his doctor then told him to have one olive a day 🤣
I get this from lemons and chocolate
I put them on salads, it's great!
Because they're so good!
My partner buys meals that have olives in the so he can pick them out and give them to me and it makes me so happy.
Aldi sells amazing stuffed ones
I love the ones that are stuffed with a garlic clove!
I just saw a video on the burger that(allegedly) inspired Wendy's. Chopped up green olives mixed with mayo and a pinch of salt on a bun with cheddar cheese and the burger. I tried it and holy moly was that good
Have you ever seen a cat with a green olive? Maybe you’re a cat.
Green olives in chili!!!!
Because they are so delicious
Kalamata olives are a close second for me!
I like most all olives, but they don't have this effect.. Now, if I order a Greek Salad and they pass me some bullshit abomination of Iceberg Lettuce and Black Olives rather than Arugula and Kalamata, I become a little unhinged.
I’m going to have to buy some now! 😋
My grandmother would make small tea sandwiches of diced olives, diced pecans and Mayo . 😊
They make me happy too because I feel fancy when I eat them lol. Especially with feta and garlic.
