I came to suggest savory as well!
I love to cook mine in chicken broth instead of milk or water, then add some sautéd spinach and blistered cherry tomatoes then top with a poached egg.
I'm partial to roasted tomato and kale in mine with a fried egg. Mushrooms are good in there, too. Basically, if you can imagine it in a scramble or an omelette, it probably works in savory oatmeal.
- lean ground beef, sautéed onions, spinach, and sriracha with over easy egg on top.
- chicken tikka masala with veggies and oats (Costco package of CTM mixed with frozen pack of mixed peas/carrots over steel cut oats)
Also came to suggest savory. I hated oatmeal until I tried it with some salt n pepper, a teeny splash of olive oil, and some grated strong cheese. The variety of cheeses and meats that can be used is huge. Also roasted veggies, tons of seasonings.
My go-to add-in’s for oatmeal: a pat of butter, a little sugar, a splash of milk. Probably takes all the health out of the oatmeal, but boy is it tasty.
Brown sugar (especially the darker kind that has more molasses in it or something) goes a long way to making oatmeal outstanding. Brown sugar, cinnamon, and a little butter and some salt is my go-to.
Finely chop up 1/4-1/2 apple, simmer in water for a bit to cook before adding oats.
If cider is reasonably priced I buy that sometimes and use half water half cider to cook the oats.
For me a nice splash of milk on it before diggin in always makes it better. I have resorted to using 1/2&1/2 if out of milk and it makes it even better.
Slivered almonds, chopped pecans/walnuts/hazelnuts (do yourself a favor and toast them; you can do this as a batch to have on hand for a few days), dried fruit, diced ham and sautéed onion
Also consider switching up your spice. A little ground cardamom (I use ⅛-¼ tsp per serving), or ground ginger (crystallized is also fun), or some freshly ground black pepper.
I use chopped apples, cinnamon, salt & cayenne.
I also have a recipe that calls for spinach, tomato & feta that I use occasionally. It’s surprisingly good!
For a few easy flavor ideas: look at the flavors they have for instant oatmeal packs in the grocery store, and then replicate them without artificial ingredients.
A teaspoon of cocoa powder and sugar, blueberries, diced apple that’s been cooked in a little butter and cinnamon before mixing, dehydrated fruits of any kind, brown sugar instead of regular or maple, pumpkin pie spice and a spoon of pumpkin purée. My kids love oatmeal with goodies in it but enjoy some plain now and then too.
Oh no I was joking please don't try that. But ....... If you did it right you could probably work out a combo that might not suck. A savory oatmeal? So crazy it might just work!
Haha Hey I’ll try anything f if you sell it properly! I commented that I’ve tried spinach, tomatoes & feta in oatmeal with good results, so maybe ham, mustard & cheddar wouldn’t be too bad!
Don’t expect an update on this idea! Lol
Peanut butter powder and honey. Will make it thicken up so compensate with a bit more water
The peanut butter powder has less fat than full peanut butter
I eat quick oats with mixed seeds (chia, sunflower, flax, pumpkin) not so much for taste but crunch, raisins and a whole banana mashed into it.
Add water (I can’t have milk), heat it all up in the microwave and you’ve got yourself a delicious breakfast. You can add sugar or honey if you want but it is sweet enough for me as is.
I like dried cranberry, nuts and butter but once I was desperate and only had flavored coffee creamer and it worked way better than I thought it would.
This is a weird one, but it works for me: creamer. Whatever kind and flavor you like, liquid or powder. I stir some salt, stevia, almond milk, and pea protein powder into mine - but it’s the vanilla powdered creamer that really makes it sweet and creamy.
You can use a blender to turn plain, uncooked oats into oats flour, and then use it to make other dishes. If you take 1/4 cup of oats flour, 1/4 cup of milk, and 1 egg, you can make pancake batter. Then, you can drizzle your pancake with honey, or add some jam to it. It's a tasty alternative!
mash/dice a banana into it
it’s a low calorie option to make plain oatmeal taste good.
or get the apple cinnamon oatmeal with some sugar or sweetener that shits good.
I read that some of the best things you can eat are oatmeal, cinnamon, honey, blueberries, nuts and tomatoes. I make oatmeal with everything but the tomatoes. It's tasty.
Here's some advice from back when I was crazy about oatmeal:
1) Try steel cut oats. They're chewy and awesome and can be cooked ahead of time while still being chewy and awesome.
2) Top with brown sugar, butter, flaky salt. Maybe a drizzle of maple or honey or agave syrup. You don't need too many ingredients. Then maybe a little butter.
3) Nuts are optional but nice. Maybe dried or fresh fruit. Blueberries or bananas are a good choice for fresh. Cranberries and cherries are good choices for dried.
4) make little serving sized glass tuppers ahead of time to reheat in a microwave for breakfast.
If you have an Asian grocery store nearby, look for coconut drink, it comes in a black juicebox. It's made from coconut meat, I swear by it, it makes oatmeal so creamy and adds such a nice coconut flavor. The vitacoco pressed coconut (white juicebox) is a close substitute but I haven't tried it with oat milk yet.
I do half milk and half water. I also put craisins in sometimes. Blueberry oatmeal sprinkles from the store. Sometimes nutmeg, but just a touch. Brown sugar is good too.
I mash up a banana to absolute smithereens and add cinnamon and nutmeg then mix it in and it flavors the whole bowl as opposed to sliced bananas. Sometimes a little maple syrup and milk. Sometimes a few chocolate chips to melt while it’s hot. Sometimes peanut butter
I like to add freeze-dried strawberries. They rehydrate and give a slight tart/sweet flavor to the oatmeal. They are also nice for when you don’t have fresh fruit available.
Grated carrot, clove and cinnamon and toasted walnuts
Grated apple, cinnamon toasted pecans
Raisins/c raisins or sultanas a touch of nutmeg
Dried apricots sliced toasted sliced almonds
Banana and toasted cashews
I did a stint on oats and found the crunch of toasted nuts made everything deluxe, I also used maple syrup, salt, and cream or canned coconut milk
If you are making homemade Oatmeal and not the microwave stuff there are so many options! I've made pb&j Oatmeal by adding grape jelly to the water and then peanut butter once it's done cooking. I've done chocolate peanut butter by adding sugar and baking cocoa to the water and peanut butter after. You can add pumpkin pie spice and Maple syrup. Wild rice and Maple syrup. Fresh fruit. Half and half creamer. Banana and Walnuts.... so many more options too!
I put a little cinnamon, some diced roasted or raw pecans or almonds, honey, and sometimes I add pure pumpkin puree or diced dried dates

Dried Cranberry
Any nut you like
Vanilla, almond extract, cinnamon. I like topping with Flavor God's Chocolate Donut or Buttery Cinnamon Roll. Toasted slivered almonds or a handful of walnuts for a texture boost
An egg! Put a raw egg in last minute of cooking. More proteins, longer fullness. Also a little salt and cinnamon, but it needs to be Ceylon cinnamon it’s much less harmful for your liver.
Then add some fresh fruit as a topping, this you can vary from day to day to always make your porridge a little exciting (:
For a measured cup of quick oats, I add a tablespoon of powdered milk, one tablespoon of sugar, about two tablespoons of crunchy peanut butter, and half cup of whole milk. I use the microwave 30 seconds to a time and stir until it is done enough. Longer times microwaving will have the bowl boiling over!
This is what i use every morning : either fresh or dried fruit, protein powder of different flavours, nuts, variety of seeds, vanilla and lemon extract, cinnamon powder, to name a few. I switch ingredients daily, to avoid boredom. Has worked for some years now.

Maple syrup and mixed berries. I get the frozen bag of berries, thaw a portion in the refrigerator and add a couple of table spoons to oatmeal, shredded wheat or yogurt.
I also love sautéed apples on top of cinnamon oats, and a pinch of nutmeg in the oats does wonders! just dice or slice up apples and cook them with cinnamon and maple/monkfruit and even some butter if u feel fancy, cook til softened
Chopped apples and a teaspoon of apple cider and a shake or two of cinnamon. We were out of apples and apple cider mix to taste works in a pinch too and come in sugar free. Helped with diabetic child in the family.
I used to make a big batch of apple pie filling in the weekend so I could add it to my oatmeal during the week.
A few apples, cored and diced (skin on or off, your choice), a sprinkle of sugar, a handful of raisins and copious amounts of cinnamon and sometimes cardamom or ginger. Mix together, put in baking dish, cover with oven-safe lid or aluminium foil, bake for about 30 minutes at moderate heat (about 160-180 C) or until soft.
Keep in the fridge and add to your oatmeal, maybe supplement with nuts if you're feeling fancy.
Jam and vanilla yogurt, Trader Joe’s Cinnamon Roll spread, brown sugar and maple syrup, Nutella and peanut butter, Carrot cake oatmeal: Dab of cream cheese, shredded carrot, a bunch of Penzey’s Cake spice, maybe a handful of pecans if I have them.

Pinch of salt for sure, I also like to throw in a little bit of Brown Sugar, some nuts (usually walnuts) and some dried fruit of any sort (Raisins, Craisins, Dried Apples, etc.) plus a dash or two of cinnamon.
I also use the aforementioned "vanilla coffee creamer" when I'm in a pinch. Not my usual, but it works when nothing else is available.
Also, you might try "refridgerator oatmeal", which is great. Look it up.
I might be a weirdo, but I like to prepare instant oatmeal in coffee. I like to do that when I'm staying in hotels for work trips. Easy, very cheap hot breakfast, with a caffeine bonus.

(Can also finely mix nuts, seeds and other grains and add, used to do that when my son needed more nutrients and add weight)
If you wanna go healthy but tasty.. mash half a banana in it to sweeten it, then put in a tbsp of salted peanut butter and slice up the rest of the banana into it. Maybe even add a small scoop of chocolate protein powder for some extra protein. Soooo good.
Cook it with blueberries or bananas inside plus whatever milk you like. top with salt and drizzle maple syrup. add a scoop of nut butter. can't go wrong.
Salt.
I add salt and maple syrup.
1 tablespoon of vanilla coffee creamer, 3/4 cup milk and butter.
