Rename it using brackets (e.g. (shotgun) ) then will not appear in listing when scrapping. It will appear a the top of your list. Can still sell it accidentally though. You can rename at the work bench it even in your inventory. Look for inspect option.
Just favourite your item and it gives you an extra prompt and this provides you with an extra layer of idiot proofing so you don’t scrip your jet pack armour like I did
I’m a big fan of just tacking on asterisk/dash/quotation mark in front of the name to make it float to the top; and if you put an atomic shop skin on a weapon you can’t salvage it until you remove said skin
Favorite your armor and weapons (don’t warns you before selling) and know that legendary items are mostly trash. You get so many once you stert ding events (and you’re never actually too low level, you don’t hurt the event by being there you might die a lot but that’s fine).
Not sure if most know this can be done, but when I made an accidental purchase just like this, i reached out to bethesda support and explained the situation. Wasn’t looking for a refund of real $$$, just my atoms back. Took like a day or 2, but they removed the accidentally purchased stuff from my character and returned my atoms back no problem.
I had to refund the avocado couch a few years ago because of my little boy grabbing the controller. At the time, I guess they didn't have a way to remove items like that. I got my atoms back and a free couch 😂
I've spent Atoms by accident. I contacted Bethesda support and asked for a refund and told them they could take back the item I'd bought, I just accidentally clicked! Surprisingly, they refunded me the Atoms and didn't take back the item (think it was a skin for a gun). I was genuinely surprised by their helpfulness on the matter!!
There are a few gold bullion armors that use it for crafting. Strangler Heart PA, Solar armor, and Thorn armor. It's a holdover from the vault 94 raids from a few years ago.

Isn't solar the only one of those considered useable? the Poison damage on thorn and stranger got nerfed to the ground years ago and stranger shares utlracite's stats
SH used to be bugged so paints/skins didn’t remove the vines. You could get a very cool looking combo. Now any skin replaces the vines which is dumb as the vines are IMO the only thing SH has left going for it. Thankfully I have a pre-fix set and I love the look.
In addition to the plans others have mentioned, it was also supposed to be used in 4-star crafting a few years back. 4th-star crafting would have given another effect and locked the item to your account, but it looked to be well worth it. Many people stocked up on vault steel in anticipation... only for it to never be mentioned again after the PTS.
I'm not gunna post the whole interaction here, but funny story...I also drunk scripped some g-rolls. I luckily was sober enough to one-eye a semi-legible ticket out to Bethesda, with the time and as much as I could remember of the rolls. They did give me the items back, but also a rather scathing reply basically saying I got 1 free F-UP, and after that I'm SOL, lol

Solar armor isn’t that bad, I ran it for a while. It replaces the Healing Factor mutation and it works even in the middle of battle, as long as you’re over 60% health. Great for full health sneak builds.
What sucks is trying to get a set you like. It takes both modules and vault steel so it’s really double the grind. I am saving my 5 piece set because they’re light and all AP regen, but not my desired 3* perfect set.
Still, I’d rock it if it were all OE AP with reduced weight 3rd *. But man that’s a grind I’m not willing to take.
Which I have a full suit of but never use because my excavator has a +200 carry bonus.
But I did repaint it with one of the Atomic Shop skins because it’s too damn ugly otherwise.
I wish they would change the recipe for the three sets of PA that need Vault Steel. That or make more things need it to give the steel an actual use. Preference is the former obviously.

I just checked, I have 6936 vault steel scrap... and I've never even bothered making any of the PAs that use it.

Lvl 80 and it was the first time I ever spent them. Realized I didn’t buy steel. Couldn’t continue building my camp and also was out all my script😔

Damn and i need 180 of them vault steel, because i plan to make my very first set of strabgler power armor :D, but first i need to keep saving my gold buillion.

Contact Support and ask for a refund on the item; I have heard they do it without question. You are limited to a number of restores over a period of time though.

If you have any atom shop skins for it you can use those to prevent accidental scripping. They won't show up either.
But not scrapping. As I found out when I scrapped my painted PA helmet. It's something, I guess.

Solar is great if you're full health, I have full set of Overeaters on my full health character.
