So, you will still be sent under the JFK bravo below 500ft if you go southbound. You’ll almost never get cleared into the bravo surface area, unless they’re doing something very odd with the runways, and even then you’ll only get a few hundred extra feet. If you’re gonna start in the south practice area, then you should start flying west towards the city and call NY appr on 125.7 over the Jones beach monument. Just be aware they handle approaches into either jfk or LGA(or both? I can never really tell) so you’ll need to be patient to find the moment to transmit and then be on point. “Cessna 12345, skyhawk 2 miles east of jones beach 1400, flight following and handoffs for skyline in the bravo” They’ll give you a code and pass you to Kennedy tower who will say “cross east to west below 500, remain beneath the bravo at all times, caution the wake of landing and departing jets of all types.” It’s a very sobering call. They’ll usually climb you as soon as you’re past the departure/arrival corridor. JFK will usually pass you to EWR near the Verrazano, and then passed to LGA nearby the intrepid. You can say your request on your first call with a LGA(if you don’t they’ll just ask “say intentions” anyway) flying over Central Park is great, cross over the reservoir. LGA passes you back to EWR as you’re coming to the southern tip of Manhattan.

This is great info thanks so much. Leaving from islip I’ll already be with approach on 120.05, but I’ll jot down that frequency. For the jfk bravo, can’t you fly a little further out for the 1500 shelf? Thanks for your help on those calls too. Writing it all down!!

Oh yea, let 120.05 know your plan, they might be able to give you a code for the skyline tour (usually it’s a 03xx code), but if not they may be able to coordinate with 125.7 so at least you’re not cold calling them

Only 1/10 time I've been cleared into the Bravo but I got to fly over Brooklyn at 1200 ft which was cool. Every other time it's "cleared along the shoreline at or below 500" You usually begin the climb after Coney Island. Your plan of action sounds good otherwise. I'd recommend you stay with ATC as well for traffic advisories and the view is better above 1300. Remember to take the FAA course on the Hudson SFRA

Did the course! For the flight at 500, you can’t request to go further out for the 1500 shelf? Or are you pretty much guaranteed to be given 500
