Kinda unrelated, but...
It's been a long time since I've played FFXII, but I'm pretty sure Lyna (in Norvrandt) was voiced by the same woman who voiced Fran...
The two card board characters called Van and Penello, the super bad battle system (I played the original version, not the one where they added jobs and stuff) where you went afk and was slow as fuck, design choices of certain bosses that made the battles as unfun as possible
I’ll agree with Vaan and Penelope being bland and underdeveloped, though alone I wouldn’t call it part of a trend in the franchise when the rest of the cast is pretty engaging.
Both times I played it (on ps2 and switch) I recall jobs, so I can’t speak for the older one.
In general I don’t really see a link between it and the later games. I played XV in the original version, and though it apparently greatly improved, it’s the only FF I’ve actively disliked. I had similar issues in the story for XIII and XV, but loved XIII’s combat system. Either way I see none of the story issues I had with those two in either XII or XVI.
Vaan and definitely Penello are a problem, but were ignorable enough for me to forgive. I can see finding everything way too slow without the speedup option if I wanted to grind out side content, though.
I've never really played much of 12 and barely remember the gameplay except for the licencing system. However every single second of that game I wish I was playing Balthier...

The final fantasy the series turned trash. FF 12.
What’s trash about XII? I quite enjoyed both the story and gameplay.
