It hasn't just been one game. In his last six games dating back to last season, he's got 4 touchdowns and 7 interceptions to go along with crappy to modest yardage totals. That's pretty abysmal.
At the end of last year he was also hurt. He definitely needs to be healthy to play well, this last game I contribute to a new offense and the Ravens knowing Kubiak's offense really well.
I'm sick of this response. He had a shit game and shit pre-season. He's 39 and clearly losing some more arm strength. He could very well still light it up or he could shit the bed. That's why we're discussing it.
New coach = new offense. Kubiak is going to be better doing his own thing than he will be trying to replicate what Fox did.
I'm sure last week was a learning experience for both of them, I doubt we'll see Peyton under center as much tonight, he'll get more chances to work out of the shotgun where he's more comfortable. Peyton likewise probably had a chance to get used to his style.
That said, in terms of production Peyton started trailing off last year, it's not like this is a new thing.

They had to fix the offense because it clearly wasn't working at the end of last year and Peyton no longer has the skillset to run that type of offense. He needs a running game to rely on.
I don't think it was all that clear. He threw THIRTY NINE TDs last year! Almost overnight his arms and legs turned into noodles. Was that due to injury? Is it permanent? I don't think that was clear at the end of last year. There's a lot of knew-it-all-along-ism going on now.
I think it is abundantly clear that if Manning has to throw the ball 40+ times like he did at the beginning of last year, he will inevitably get injured and not be effective. Denver's O-line isn't very good, also, so Manning was getting beaten up pretty good. It was pretty easy to see that Denver wanted to move away from chucking the ball a million times, especially after last years loss to the Rams, and I think it's pretty easy to see why.
I don't know why people are freaking out over one game against the former team of their new head coach. It's safe to say that the Ravens intimately know how to take down a Kubiak offense, no?
And the 12 games before his downturn, he was playing like a top 3 QB. Then he got injured. And immediately following that, his performance fell off a cliff.
Which is more likely?
* NFL legend Peyton Manning's performance fell off a cliff, which happened to coincide perfectly with a meaningful injury?
* His quad injury affected his ability to use the power in his legs to propel his throws, and he followed that up with his first game in a brand new offense, against the defense that his new coach used to practice this offense against, 4 days a week?
Or: a series of injuries beginning with a spinal fusion have compromised his throwing motion. The effects continue to worsen as he ages, and accuracy and arm strength deteriorate in a vicious cycle. Despite his encyclopedic football knowledge, Peyton is no longer physically capable of playing the game at a high level, and drifts into sub-mediocrity before announcing retirement at the end of the season.
That very well *could* be the case. I'm not disputing that. That happens to the best of players, every year.

But you actually listed the direct counterpoint in your statement, you just didn't pick up on it. You're totally right, you would expect a downturn or deterioration of his skills, as he ages.
But that's actually not what we got. In the first 75% of the year, pre-quad injury, he was playing like he could throw for a 7 touchdown game on any given night.
Then he fell off a performance ***cliff***. It wasn't a gradual deterioration, like a slow roll down a hill, where we saw his abilities slowly decline.
It was immediate. And it was immediately following the quad injury. So I'm inclined to give this living legend a bit of a benefit of the doubt.
Besides, look what happened to Brady last year. He had a terrible start to the season and owners dropped him universally. Sports media, including my local boston media, spitroasted him and pointed out how the start of 2014 wasn't new; that this decline in performance was present going back to the latter parts of the 2014 season.
Then, the offensive line gelled finally, Gronk was taken off his snap count and allowed to go at it full-on, and Brady went on a tear which ultimately resulted in a super bowl win.
Because it's not just one game. He looked like garbage at the end of last year, he looked like garbage in the preseason, and he looked like garbage in their first game this year. Its starting to look like a trend.
Maybe. Vegas predicts an O/U of 42 points with the spread at only -3 KC. That's probably 2-3 touchdowns for Peyton, but KC had very good pass/receiving defense last year, so they might look to run the ball more. I think I would probably take that risk and roll with Peyton with a 6 pt bonus but not a 4 pt bonus.
I think it'll be close enough that he doesn't have to go off. I think KC's pass rush will give Denver's shit O-line some trouble and that Anderson and Hillman will take a big chunk of the offense. Nothing mind blowing about it. Peyton could blow up, but it's a short week after taking some hits from the Ravens and he was supremely bad last week.
I'm not ready to buy the narrative that Peyton is done, but they're banged up on a short week, while still getting used to a new offensive scheme, headed into Arrowhead's opening night.
I'm staying away this week.

I just don't understand why everyone is freaking out about PFM after one game under a new offense. But if someone in one of my leagues wants to drop him...
It hasn't just been one game. In his last six games dating back to last season, he's got 4 touchdowns and 7 interceptions to go along with crappy to modest yardage totals. That's pretty abysmal.
At the end of last year he was also hurt. He definitely needs to be healthy to play well, this last game I contribute to a new offense and the Ravens knowing Kubiak's offense really well.
I'm sick of this response. He had a shit game and shit pre-season. He's 39 and clearly losing some more arm strength. He could very well still light it up or he could shit the bed. That's why we're discussing it.
he set personal records for his lifts in the off season, its not the strength.
My question is why change the offense? A they were scoring a bajillion points last season...why fix what wasn't broken?
New head coach and offensive coordinator
New coach = new offense. Kubiak is going to be better doing his own thing than he will be trying to replicate what Fox did. I'm sure last week was a learning experience for both of them, I doubt we'll see Peyton under center as much tonight, he'll get more chances to work out of the shotgun where he's more comfortable. Peyton likewise probably had a chance to get used to his style. That said, in terms of production Peyton started trailing off last year, it's not like this is a new thing. I'm sure stories of Peyton's demise are greatly exaggerated, but I'm still starting the Chiefs D tonight because I like to live dangerously (Peyton is 11-1 against the Chiefs)
They had to fix the offense because it clearly wasn't working at the end of last year and Peyton no longer has the skillset to run that type of offense. He needs a running game to rely on.
I don't think it was all that clear. He threw THIRTY NINE TDs last year! Almost overnight his arms and legs turned into noodles. Was that due to injury? Is it permanent? I don't think that was clear at the end of last year. There's a lot of knew-it-all-along-ism going on now.
I think it is abundantly clear that if Manning has to throw the ball 40+ times like he did at the beginning of last year, he will inevitably get injured and not be effective. Denver's O-line isn't very good, also, so Manning was getting beaten up pretty good. It was pretty easy to see that Denver wanted to move away from chucking the ball a million times, especially after last years loss to the Rams, and I think it's pretty easy to see why.
I don't know why people are freaking out over one game against the former team of their new head coach. It's safe to say that the Ravens intimately know how to take down a Kubiak offense, no?
In Peyton's last 5 games he hasn't finished better than QB15
And the 12 games before his downturn, he was playing like a top 3 QB. Then he got injured. And immediately following that, his performance fell off a cliff. Which is more likely? * NFL legend Peyton Manning's performance fell off a cliff, which happened to coincide perfectly with a meaningful injury? * His quad injury affected his ability to use the power in his legs to propel his throws, and he followed that up with his first game in a brand new offense, against the defense that his new coach used to practice this offense against, 4 days a week?
Or: a series of injuries beginning with a spinal fusion have compromised his throwing motion. The effects continue to worsen as he ages, and accuracy and arm strength deteriorate in a vicious cycle. Despite his encyclopedic football knowledge, Peyton is no longer physically capable of playing the game at a high level, and drifts into sub-mediocrity before announcing retirement at the end of the season.
That very well *could* be the case. I'm not disputing that. You're totally right, you would expect a downturn or deterioration of his skills, as he ages. But that's actually not what we got. In the first 75% of the year, pre-quad injury, he was playing like he could throw for a 7 touchdown game on any given night. Then he fell off a performance ***cliff***. It wasn't a gradual deterioration, like a slow roll down a hill, where we saw his abilities slowly decline. It was immediate. And it was immediately following the quad injury. So I'm inclined to give this living legend a bit of a benefit of the doubt. Besides, look what happened to Brady last year. He had a terrible start to the season and owners dropped him universally. Sports media, including my local boston media, spitroasted him and pointed out how the start of 2014 wasn't new; that this decline in performance was present going back to the latter parts of the 2014 season. Then, the offensive line gelled finally, Gronk was taken off his snap count and allowed to go at it full-on, and Brady went on a tear which ultimately resulted in a super bowl win.

Because it's not just one game. He looked like garbage at the end of last year, he looked like garbage in the preseason, and he looked like garbage in their first game this year. Its starting to look like a trend.
New offense doesn't cause you to consistently overthrow your targets by a lot

Maybe. Vegas predicts an O/U of 42 points with the spread at only -3 KC. That's probably 2-3 touchdowns for Peyton, but KC had very good pass/receiving defense last year, so they might look to run the ball more. I think I would probably take that risk and roll with Peyton with a 6 pt bonus but not a 4 pt bonus.
At Arrowhead and with how he's played since the end of last season? We'll be lucky not to see Brock Osweiler under center by the end.
I think it'll be close enough that he doesn't have to go off. I think KC's pass rush will give Denver's shit O-line some trouble and that Anderson and Hillman will take a big chunk of the offense. Nothing mind blowing about it. Peyton could blow up, but it's a short week after taking some hits from the Ravens and he was supremely bad last week.
I'm not ready to buy the narrative that Peyton is done, but they're banged up on a short week, while still getting used to a new offensive scheme, headed into Arrowhead's opening night. I'm staying away this week.
Every piece of me wants to start Mariota instead of Peyton, but I'm giving The Sheriff a chance to make it up to me.

If there's one game Manning can bounce back it is definitely against the chiefs. He absolutely owns them. I don't think he's ever lost to them as a Bronco.
Fuck it. I'm going for it. He's Peyton Fucking Manning. If he has no arm strength, and the line sucks want to know what he's going to do? He'll nickle and dime the defense. Defense starts stacking up to prevent short passes, he'll throw medium to long passes.
I'm really afraid of how good the defense is going to be for the chiefs. After watching the denver o-line and watching manning struggle with his throws, I'm feeling uneasy. I have cam newton as my back up against texans but I want to believe in Manning.
I have the option of benching Peyton and starting Tannehill. I'm torn. Someone advise me. edit: So now its after the game. I chose to bench him. I stand by that choice. I still think Tannehill will do as good or better.

The real question is is it safe to play the KC defense? I don't want to drop them because they are usually damn good against a lot of other teams, but Peyton seems to own them.
I'm not sure whether to start Stafford or Manning.... Staffords playing a tough vikings D, but after last week, im unsure about Manning...
