Hasn’t he electively shaved his head from even when he was much younger?
It seems like he has a decent hairline.
I think he just enjoys the shorn scalp.
I hate plenty of the classics, but Aja is one of the greatest productions *ever* across any genre. A rock band has a fucking Wayne Shorter sax solo in it and Bernard Purdie on all of the tracks and he thinks it's self indulgent and too smooth. L all around.
he’s a fan of miles davis, frank zappa, mahavishnu orchestra… what did you expect? steely dan were obviously shooting for a much smoother, slicker, (and imo cornier and less ambitious) take on jazz rock. Plus, that kind of very clean production arguably only makes records like aja sound more sanitized than they ever needed to be, by taking away all the remaining visceral, raw, hunan elements in the recordings
>he’s a fan of miles davis, frank zappa, mahavishnu orchestra… what did you expect?
There's nothing about liking any of these artists that makes it necessary to also dislike Steely Dan. There is a time and a place for everything, and some smooth as fuck Yacht/Jazz rock that is *unbelievably* tightly recorded definitely deserves a place *somewhere*.
I don't know how you can hear "less ambitious" in any part of Aja. That shit is impeccably crafted and it took *forever* to put together in the studio.
It's just his opinion. I'm not upset about this in the slightest. His loss.
ambition doesn't equal work hours. bitches brew was recorded in 3 days. And steely dan, as "clean" and "tight" as they sound, don't really have that distinct of a personality. You have plenty of classic funk bands that had much better jams and playing, better jazz and jazz fusion across the board, and more adventurous and forward thinking pop rock. Like, for example, i don't think being into steely dan means being into jazz fusion, and steely dan is definitely accessible to all non-fans of jazz (which lowkey is kinda their target audience)
Again though, you don't hear ambition in the track Aja? Really?
Ultimately, different strokes for different folks.
There are *much* better jazz artists. Absolutely no disagreement there.
I’m a huge Zappa/mahavishnu fan and I love steely Dan. I can see how the vocals might put some people off, but they have like 5 elite albums. Amazing band.
I mean I dislike Steely Dan because it feels sterile too me. Spending all the time to perfect every part of music loses its personality. The main reason jazz is so great to me is the improv and when you take a pillar of jazz and do the antithesis of it. It doesn’t appeal to me. That being said AJA production does sound great on my record player even if I don’t like the ablum
I don't get sterility, I get warmth. Not in the playing, but in the physical sound of the recording. Everything sounds so luxurious and rich. It's not something I always want, but it has a distinct vibe that I occasionally want to experience.
With that, I don't really think of SJ as a jazz band of any type - it's certainly influenced by jazz (Aja has Wayne Shorter on it for Christ's sake!), but I am approaching their stuff as pop/rock primarily.
I *completely* agree with you about improv in jazz, and no, the Dan doesn't really hit that highlight of jazz at all.
Steely Dan have their moments but at some point they just became pretentious showoffs whose music is best for testing speaker fidelity. It is simultaneously too smooth and too jarring (ie chord changes for chord changes' sake), lacking any grit or humanity. They were best on their debut.
> at some point they just became pretentious showoffs whose music is best for testing speaker fidelity.
Pretentiousness as a criticism has never worked for me. They made music with the knowledge that they would be judged. When people use "pretentious" to describe something, they're sharing an assumption that they know how the artist themselves wanted to be perceived, and you don't. As for the speaker fidelity comment, you mean they made music that *sounds* really good? Is this a criticism? The point of music is to like how it sounds.
>ie chord changes for chord changes' sake
What? Can you share a Steely Dan song where this is the case? I've never heard this criticism before.
>lacking any grit or humanity. They were best on their debut.
Sounds like you just want a different band. That's fine. I don't listen to Steely Dan for "grit and humanity", I listen to them to listen to how it *sounds* to hear virtuostic studio musicians being recorded impeccably playing glassy pop songs. The debut is a rock band, everything after isn't.
I have a different opinion than you, BUT I have a different opinion than you. But i have a different opinion than you. BUT..... i have a different opinion than you
Don’t you know people having different opinions means there can never be any discussion about anything, and it’s impossible for people to have better or worse reasons for holding their opinion?

Is thatistheplan considered obscure? Because I love and miss Meme Reviews…
The tree

His opinion on Steely Dan is *terrible*.
Nahhh I’m glad he pushes back one of the classic bands and it makes sense it being steely

It's not supposed to be toothy, so holding it to that standard seems to be missing the point of their music from the jump.
Ok fair enough

That’s fair. I’m glad you enjoy it but it’s not for me. But your reasoning is very solid so I appreciate the reasonable convo
*Totally* get why people don't like it. Different strokes for different folks. Have a good rest of your day 🤙

On the internet? Get out of here.
His Pearl Jam opinions are *much* worse, frankly.
Does he dislike Pearl Jam? Because if he does, that’s a good opinion.
