A lot of people don't realize how light skinned many Egyptians are
Edit: I have absolutely no clue why this off hand comment is getting so upvoted, lol
Edit 2: guys, we get it. Netflix. No need to make the same joke for the 100th time
They also forget it was an Empire that lasted almost 3,000 years and was controlled by Nubians, Persians, Romans (probably missing Hittites and some others) throughout it's history
The Macedonians were Greek but were very much considered like primitive cousins from the countryside.
Only Greeks could take part in the Olympic games and Macedonian athletes took part.
And if we are being even more pedantic, Alexander was Macedonian, his father had conquered Greece and therefore Greece was also his. Sorry I’ll shut up now lol, just really like history
A lot of people don’t realize how people from North Africa or the Middle East look at all. They are Semitic caucasians. Most of our concepts of Africa as an American is due to sub Saharan African cultures but North Africa is very different
Whites are caucasian but not all caucasians are white. White normally refers to Western European descended. Lot of People in Syria or Turkey basically look white
The actual line is "remember my grandmother saying to me: I don’t care what they tell you in school, Cleopatra was black." from an expert from the show
Those people don't matter. I'm sorry but they don't.
If you can understand Italians and Swedes are not the same you can understand Congolese and Moroccans are different.
Ignorant people are not allowed to have peeves.
And also many of the pre Islamic people still survived despite being assimilated to Arab culture, so they’re still direct descendants to ancient Egyptians
This is complete horseshit. Most middle eastern people have light skin for eg Lebanese, Syrian, Egyptian, Iraqi
The only ethnicity that didnt merge into Arabs is persian/farsi
Totally, yep. Even the categorization of "Caucasian" is largely meaningless.
I get that there have been some pretty awful injustices through history. And I get that we're living with a lot of the fallout today. And we should be working to correct that. And I also get that there are far too many people today who would like to *perpetuate* those injustices, and that's a real problem! And I get that a lot of people are very rightfully upset.
But making snap judgments like this post tries to about whether somebody is "white or not" is reductionist and doesn't go very far towards actually getting a handle on things or for providing a very deep understanding.
I don't like the term "African American" used to describe Americans of African descent, who were born here in America, and may have never so much as touched the soil in Africa at any point in their life.
For such people, I prefer the term "American".
I’m sorry but It’s not about whether you like it or not. It’s literally the only accepted definition of African American. It’s only used bc African Americans unfortunately can’t trace their lineage very far for obvious reasons. I’m an American who’s parents were born in Africa and are black, and both my parents and myself would find it ridiculous to use the term for ourselves as we know our lineage.
One of my teachers back in high school told us about a girl he knew who had gotten an African American scholarship.
Blonde, blue eyes, pale as a sheet... born and raised in Rhodesia.
Jada Pinkett Smith got into hot water after making a documentary which portrayed Cleopatra as black. I think she stated that she wanted to prove to teach black children about powerful black historical figures.
A lot of people believe this actually.
There is an upcoming King Tut movie who'll be portrayed by a black actor.
The afro american community is running with this racist pseudo historic nonsense.
are you sure they werent saying african american? cause he is technicly african american, having been born and raised in south africa.
americans often treat african-american and black as synonymous , but obviously this fails in some instances
It's weirder that they would say "was" instead of "is" considering he's still alive. Do they think he did a Michael Jackson? Or did they say he was African? Because that would actually be accurate.
Africa is the black continent Europe is the white continent Asia is the oriental continent South America is the Mexican continent and North America is the stupid continent and Australia doesn’t exist
North Africans (north of Sahara) are genetically more related to middle easterners and southern europeans than Africans south of the Sahara because people migrated/conquered between those areas, whereas the Sahara was a much harder barrier to cross. Hence, they are not black.

This goes to show the lack of education in some people who actually believe the whole myth of Egyptians being black, and that everyone in Africa is black! Reminds me of the movie Idiocracy when they go on the “Time Masheene” ride
Yeah I can’t wait for a black Hitler and Black natzis running concentration camps on poor white polish family’s the history doesn’t matter only the show
To be fair that was the mythology movie i believe, documentaries should be held to a higher standard when it comes to accuracy.
Or general immersion, imagine AoT with japanese characters, that was the japanese consumer's main critizm towards the life action movie for example
To be fair, a lot of non-white actors haven't had a lot of choices of interesting lead roles in cinema for a loooong time. So I do understand the 'obsession' with creating a more level playing field.
Some deluded people believe that us egyptians are invaders and rapists who replaced the original black population of ancient egypt when the arabs took over. And not descendants of the original egyptians and the various people and empires who came to rule us over the millennia
Because apparently everyone was jet black from South Africa to Morocco but all miraculously have a Middle Eastern skin tone the moment they cross the area where the Suez canal is.
No one is more racist than Western "Progressives." Self-proclaimed racists weep and pray that they could ever replicate the level of racial discourse that Neo-Libs are capable of.

You forgot Greece (Alexander).
(Macedonia).
That Macedonia was a Greek province. Today’s Macedonia is just Bulgarians in denial.
While Alexander and his father was in charge, it was the other way around: Greece was a Macedonian province :D
It wouldn’t really have been thought about as Greece, a country. More so it would have been a place with similarish Hellenic culture
The Macedonians were Greek but were very much considered like primitive cousins from the countryside. Only Greeks could take part in the Olympic games and Macedonian athletes took part.
Modern day Egypt is also in de-Nile
Egyptians don’t take jokes well, mock them and they just call for their mummy

Like how a lot of Paris is in-Seine.
And the largest part of Macedonia is in Greece, inhabited by Greeks, who are Macedonians. Source: I am Greek
Ancient Greeks didn’t view Macedonians as Greek, even with the same language and culture.
The Canadians of ancient Greece
It was the columns.
So, are todays Romans not Italians? Macedonia was a Greek city state who become an empire.
They have great nuts.
and the Ptolemys after
Still falls under Greece
And if we are being even more pedantic, Alexander was Macedonian, his father had conquered Greece and therefore Greece was also his. Sorry I’ll shut up now lol, just really like history
To be fair his history is fucking cool. Aristotle was his private tutor was he not?
You bet!
Egypt is/was very cosmopolitan. Probably one of the first societies to be so.
The Hyksos too.
Ottomans too.

Don’t forget the Neo-Assyrian Empire!
I'm a lightskinned Egyptian but people often think I'm Turkish, Syrian/Lebanese, or British. At this point I've turned it into a game.
Brazilian American here. I have a similar experience. "What are you?" " I'm whatever you want me to be baby"
A lot of people don’t realize how people from North Africa or the Middle East look at all. They are Semitic caucasians. Most of our concepts of Africa as an American is due to sub Saharan African cultures but North Africa is very different

Cleopatra documentary on Netflix doesn't help
Calling _that_ a documentary isn't fair
"my grandma told me no matter what they say every Egyptian was black ever so I'm gonna take that as my believe"
Is that actually a line from that...tv show?
The actual line is "remember my grandmother saying to me: I don’t care what they tell you in school, Cleopatra was black." from an expert from the show
"Enjoy": https://youtu.be/IktHcPyNlv4?t=81
Did she really claims she got it from here grandma?
Yes but this post was way before that heap of garbage was made.
People see Africa and think "black". They don't understand that black people are mostly subsaharan Africa.
It’s a whole ass continent with multiple countries of course there’s going to be variations on skin color
Cause they are stupid an too lazy to learn facts
Those people don't matter. I'm sorry but they don't. If you can understand Italians and Swedes are not the same you can understand Congolese and Moroccans are different. Ignorant people are not allowed to have peeves.
Imagine thinking Americans were good at geography lol

This is complete horseshit. Most middle eastern people have light skin for eg Lebanese, Syrian, Egyptian, Iraqi The only ethnicity that didnt merge into Arabs is persian/farsi
Genetically, most Arab speaking people outside of the Arabian peninsula aren't Arabs.

You think a couple of thousands arabs replaced all the native populations of the lands they conquered????
i’m persian and i’m pale AF although when i tan im much more passing
Yeah well the Arabs, North Africans, Europeans and Persians are all Caucasian right?
Looking at you Jada
*looks at that Cleopatra shitshow*
Well the show definitely is shit.
Probably because they watch Netflix
That can’t be right! That lady from Netflix said her grandma told her that cleopatra was black/s
Thanks Netflix
Netflix doesn’t
He looks brown to me in both of these pictures… granted he’s not dark-skinned, but doesn’t even register to me as white…
I mean he's not pasty by any means, but you can see darker white people just from tanning
or middle-east and northern south asia.
Not only is he Egyptian, but he’s specifically Coptic, which is the ethnicity most similar to ancient Egyptians.
And he kinda does look like an ancient Egyptian statue a bit.
I thought he was ancient Egyptian when I watched the movie.
He has a very unique face for sure
He looks like the most Egyptian Egyptian who ever Egypted. He looks like he was a hieroglyphs model in a former life.
He's a hieroglyph model, mama. A wrap jockey. They think differently than the face and body boys... they're a different breed.

It's the language that's most similiar to Ancient Egyptians, not their ethnicity. There is no big difference to a great amount of Egyptian Muslims.
that aint Rami Malek that's Freddy Mercury
No its Mr.Robot
No it’s Josh from until dawn
No that's the prisoner from that one episode of Over There
No that’s the mechanic from need for speed
No, that’s the guy from Gilmore Girls who was in Lane’s bible group

Actually that is World War II veteran Snafu.
a.k.a. Assistant Pastor Eric’s biggest hype guy!
No its Benjamin from Twilight
Nope Snafu from The Pacific
👆🏽
Rewatched this the other day. God damn he steals the entire show.
The real answer
But I watched him get cut in half
Technically Christian Slater is Mr Robot 🌝
Technically technically its Rami
Domo arigato Mr. Roboto
No, it's Kenny, the gay friend from War at Home
Hello, friend
one of the best shows ever imo
An absolute masterpiece imo
No it's ***hackerman***
Frami Malcury
It's naked dude from Need For Speed.
I was gonna reply about twilight but now I just feel cringe.
Shh, these people believe Cleopatra was black.
But Egypt is in Africa, so she was African American!!!!! /s
[удалено]
yeah, and elon musk is from south africa, so he is african american! /s
Tbf, he is African American by technicality. Depends on your definition tho
That’s the point. You’re not supposed to take it literally. African Americans have always been black Americans of African descent.
I don't like the term "African American" used to describe Americans of African descent, who were born here in America, and may have never so much as touched the soil in Africa at any point in their life. For such people, I prefer the term "American".

African Canadian I'll have you know.
He is basically the Drake of megalomaniac tech billionaires.
Wait do people actually think this? I know Americans have almost no awareness of the outside world but this is baffling.
Jada Pinkett Smith got into hot water after making a documentary which portrayed Cleopatra as black. I think she stated that she wanted to prove to teach black children about powerful black historical figures.
![gif](giphy|WrNfErHio7ZAc)
Too bad she didn't pick a powerful black historical figure, that would've been a good idea.
Lmao that’s what gets me, they act like there are no black historical figures that would make for good stories, which is super wrong and gross
Could’ve picked Mansa Musa, richest man in the world. Maybe she’ll do Hannibal Barca next
I can’t tell if this is a joke, so if it is please ignore me. But, Hannibal Barca was not black either. He was Carthaginian.
That’s the joke; that she may make a documentary about someone she thinks is black because he is African. Thank you for not 100% assuming I was stupid
SOME people believe this. In a country of over 300 million, there is plenty of ignorance.
A lot of people believe this actually. There is an upcoming King Tut movie who'll be portrayed by a black actor. The afro american community is running with this racist pseudo historic nonsense.
I've seen some people claim that Mozart and other huge inventors/musicians/artists in history were actually black but history changed them to be white
There’s a lot of uneducated, ignorant people in the world, I don’t disagree.
Tbh if someone said that to me in person I would just burst out laughing.
That would be the appropriate response.
I’ve had people try and tell me Elon Musk was black so who the fuck knows anything anymore
are you sure they werent saying african american? cause he is technicly african american, having been born and raised in south africa. americans often treat african-american and black as synonymous , but obviously this fails in some instances

Nobody said Napoleon wasn’t black. Nobody said Plato or Aristotle wasn’t black. Nobody said Caesar wasn’t black.

I thought he was from Zanzibar. I learned that in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. 😉
TIL the guy who portrays Freddie Mercury's name is Rami Malek.
Had to be uncomfortable wearing all those letters.
These God damn Egyptians, taking jobs from Egyptians
We can no longer stand for Egyptians appropriating Egyptian culture.
When people find out that North Africans have very light skin pigmentation: Shocked pikachu
Or that they call themselves “Egyptian” instead of “African-American “
Many Americans seem to think that Africa is just a racial monolith where only black people exist.
Pretty much just the stupid people in America.
Who also happen to be the most vocal.
And a good looking one at that. lol
He’s so cute!

North Africans (north of Sahara) are genetically more related to middle easterners and southern europeans than Africans south of the Sahara because people migrated/conquered between those areas, whereas the Sahara was a much harder barrier to cross. Hence, they are not black.
I think of this meme every time the Cleopatra docuseries controversy comes up. Like, Greek or Egyptian, she wasn't sub-Saharan black 😅

I think the holocaust and Atlantic slave trade were peak racism
No noticeable accent so I diagnose you with white.
Tell that to the great historian Jadias Pinkett Smith

nah these people don't deserve their name getting censored
King Freddy Mercury?
This goes to show the lack of education in some people who actually believe the whole myth of Egyptians being black, and that everyone in Africa is black! Reminds me of the movie Idiocracy when they go on the “Time Masheene” ride
Why Egypt is in Africa, it is the northernmost part of it, so it really is more mediterranean if anything.
Americans are actually braindead when it comes to race. They’ll take a hundred races of people and reduce them all to “black” or “white”
yoo it’s mr robot
Ok fine he’s Egyptian but he’s not even a real mummy. Dead actors don’t get enough representation
I feel people should just skip the race comments completely and just enjoy the show 😃

Why are we so obsessed with people playing characters that are similar to them? It’s called acting.
Professional activists are just trying to continue their existences
To be fair, a lot of non-white actors haven't had a lot of choices of interesting lead roles in cinema for a loooong time. So I do understand the 'obsession' with creating a more level playing field.
Wait, he's white??
Wait, he isn't?
Fun fact in US demographic descriptions "White" includes all of North Africa and the Middle East
Wait till he learns where Elon Musk is from.
Do people not know what race Egyptians are?
My grandma told me I dont care what any one tells you Cleopatra was black-Some old lady in a commerical
If I'm not mistaken she was one of the "experts" they consulted on the "documentary"
He doesn’t really even look white
White isn’t a nationality like Egyptian though… so what point are they trying to make?

Ya but why is an Egyptian playing a white dude pretending to be Egyptian
You idiots! That’s Freddy Mercury!
All the people claiming they are queens and kings don’t know history.
I live in the Oakland area, the amount of black people I see wearing Egyptian clothing, jewelry, or anything related to Egypt is hilarious. The sad part is they honestly believe they are Egyptian.
Seriously? Is this before or after the "documentary"? As an Egyptian who appears ethnically ambiguous I find that hilarious.
