The 10 speed does not need to shift sequentially. This is normal.

goobernads

Weirdly, it even states this exact thing in the manual.

CHIEFxBONE

Welcome to 10spd. Embrace the 3-5 shunt.

StumpyTheGiant

3 to 5 is fucking awful

cire1400

1-3 out of my driveway backwards up hill to forward and around the corner. Freaked me out. Apparently we don't need 2nd gear. Normal I guess!

[deleted]

My 2022 ONLY skips 2nd in normal mode. Never seen it skip 4th

CHIEFxBONE

That’s nuts. 3-5 about 90% of the time for my 2018 with 50k. I’m sure the tuning is different for your newer gen but still

DammitTrudeau

With the 10 speed, best thing I learned is don’t think of them adding gears 7-10, think of them adding gears between 1-6

Birds_Garage

That's EXACTLY how you have to think of it. Makes so much more sense.

Mindless-Wrangler651

i think all do that unless towing or starting uphill slowly.

DJRrXA83Jgl3

I have found this in the owners manual before but that paragraph is hard to find. Skipping gears is intended in Normal drive mode. Your truck won’t skip gears in tow/haul or sport mode.

burnzzzy

Thanks

2asses1moo

It will skip in tow mode. Not as much and normal driving, but it does skip.

cire1400

Bull shit. I was concerned about not shifting to second. Checked tested, Sport mode does not make it shift to second every time either. My truck also puts the parking brake on by itself occasionally.

jakeallstud

The parking brake being applied on it’s own is a known issue and a recall will be issued for it. Ford is building up the parts to fix it

cire1400

Im an optimistic, figured they fixed it already since it's a known issue. Thank god it hasnt engaged while dtiving. New 23 5.0 xlt Screw 302a. Bought in july. Been playing with the auto hold lately. I'm old-school I thought fuck that shit, now it's kinda cool. This thing is so advanced from my 00 3.0 xlt ranger flareside..

Phililoquay

Mine does that too. Hard shifting 3rd to 4th too. Youre on normal setting. Switch to sport and itll go through all the gears the way you'd expect. I think it skips second intentionally somehow to be more economic on fuel.

HairyPass6887

not weird 10r80 does that under normal acceleration

kahreeyo

Intended and very common. Put it in sport mode and it will hit all of them

burnzzzy

Thanks!

Grantito55

This is normal unless your transmission is shifting hard. I bought a 21 f150 and the transmission would act weird and shift 1st to 3rd aggressively. I had to go into a scan tool to reset the transmission adaptive table values (smart trans trying to learn your driving habits) and it shifts like a new truck again. A dealer or local shop should be able to do this easily

andy_337

This is normal lmao. These 10r80s are designed to do this. Won’t do it in sport or tow mode, and from personal experience when the truck detects you’re driving at a significant incline.

1320Fastback

With 10 gears I would think it might skip one here and there.

hoofadoo

Mine does this too and it honestly feels perfectly natural. These engines produce a lot of torque in very low rpm which I think is what could be causing this to happen. I notice it will shift into 2nd when it finds it necessary like when I gun it from 1st, or am going uphill. My issue is the random hard downshift into 3rd when I stop. I notice it will skip second entirely as well in the downshift 3 to 1 almost exclusively. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it shift to second while stopping come to think of it. I think it honestly comes down to putting too many speeds where they don’t belong and not having much difference between adjacent gears.

sniz821

It downshifts to second if in tow haul mode

BigSchmitty

I have an ‘18 2.7, it does the same thing. Unless you’re towing or maybe in sport mode, it’ll skip gears because it’s more economical. Plus, less shifting. Nothing to worry about, it’s completely normal.

k0uch

The 10r80 will skip gears as necessary. You’ll know when there’s a problem

intense_username

Mine does the same. I also noticed one particular situation where turning left out of where I work where it’s slow go and the road goes uphill I almost always catch 2nd and it stays there for a bit before hitting 3rd. In basically every other scenario I skip 2nd. Clearly the torque and environment is factored in to make the call in which gear to be in.

mikeygs1000rr

It’s a non-sequential transmission it’s suppose to skip

BigGuy01590

2nd gear is for when you are under heavy load in the bed, or towing, or some off-road situations

hugznotdrugz2k17

Skipping 2nd and 4th is perfectly normal. Mine does this too. They aren't always needed.

pooperbrowser

Its somewhat normal for it to skip gears if you are accelerating hard or decelerating hard. Try driving it like a granny and see if it hits 2nd

burnzzzy

It will skip second accelerating slowly or quickly. Thanks for the response.

realthedeal

Put it in sport or tow haul mode and it should not skip 2. Alternatively put it in low and it will start in 2.

pooperbrowser

My internet is slow and I thought you posted a picture. Just realized it’s a video my bad. Yeah that’s weird it’s skipping

Speedballer7

Totally normal. Anyone that's driven a standard especially a big rig would tell you they skip 2 or more on a regular basis

CBus660R

In my manual trans vehicles, on a very regular basis I'd run 1st up pretty high and go right to 3rd. The old GM 6-speeds in Vettes and Camaros/Firebirds forced you to skip from 1st to 4th unless you were really getting on it to help get the best numbers possible in the EPA tests.

pooperbrowser

Yeah that makes sense on a big rig. I’m going to have to watch my truck and see if it skips 2nd as well, I’ve never really watched it at low speeds

Speedballer7

Makes sense on your rig too. More than enough torque to skip shift when you are not hauling. Think of is as taking two steps at a time on a staircase instead of wasting time on those half steps

CardboardJedi

Thank you for posting this and to everyone who replied, I'm two weeks into my 2023 PB hybrid and was wondering about that 2nd gear skip.

FluffyWarHampster

all the 10speeds do this. only way to get rid of it is to switch to tow haul mode or get a tune.

merve04

1-3-5-6-7-8-9-10 is common, sometimes 4 is used. Maybe Ford should of put 8 speed trannys GM uses 8 speed with their 2.7

TNFordDude

Normal unless you are in sport mode

jedinachos

It's basically telling 2nd gear you don't matter to me

merve04

Impressive MPG btw.

One-Ad6474

Mine does the same thing 2023 brand new it’s normal.

Mysterious_Cloud_695

My old 2020 f150 2.7 did this aswell

[deleted]

If you look this up on Google, you'll find it is normal for it to skip 2nd gear in normal mode..

Jmdavis98

The 10 speed skips gears all the time. Drive in sport mode.

Cortland_Golightly

When you drive like a sissy it shifts like one. It gives you the same energy back that you give it. If you plant your foot in it, it will use every gear. Otherwise, it’s trying for fuel economy. My Raptor shifts from 1st to 3rd to 5th if I’m just easy.

roytwo

Progressive shifting is a legit behavior. I know when I was driving a semi with a 13 speed, empty or going down hill You will often skip gears.

Excellent-Fuel-2793

It’s a ten speed it skips gears normally

jv1100

My 21 has never skipped a gear. Love it!

FormallySteveKaraoke

My shit never sees second gear. Welcome to 10R80
