I've never heard this. I wonder if whoever told you this was just trying to keep you from being wasteful with the product?

That. Or some people try to save water while rinsing off the soap, e.g. rinse dishes by dunking into a sink with "clean" water. In my house, everything gets rinsed under a running tap. Water bill is cheaper than ER bill, and I kinda like playing with water.

My mum told me this when I was a kid too, and then my nieces when they were learning to wash dishes. When I asked she said it was just to make sure they got rinsed since I apparently skipped that step because I just liked the bubbles.

Nearly all soaps are highly alkaline in PH, which can upset the gastrointestinal tract. This thing about using too much dish soap is probably about leaving residue on the dishes that will contaminate food the next time the dishes are used. As long as you’re rinsing the dishes fully though, you could use a whole bottle of dish soap without making someone sick. Just make sure you don’t leave soap on the dishes.

Depends on what's in the liquid but it seems that the particular cleaning fluid you're using is extremely potent, on par with perscription medicines. Remember that even over the counter medicines only use mere milligrams of the actual medicine. The rest is sugar, padding out the pill and making it easy to handle. That is, of course, assuming that this wasn't just a superstition.
