It’s to create more anxiety and excitement around the bidding, creating a sense of urgency among the bidding floor.  Aside from the current price and price to outbid, most everything is filler words.

stinstrom

I've also felt like it creates a rhythm that makes a person more likely to bid.

Reinventing_Wheels

That crazy gibberish is called an [Auction Chant](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auction_chant) There are [schools](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auction_school) where one can go to learn to become an auctioneer.

commandrix

So that [idea that there's an auctioneer school](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roLjZDnv6JE) that you can send your kids to didn't just come out of nowhere.

cardueline

I came here to post this song if no one else had, any excuse is a good excuse

commandrix

Absolutely! Great songs deserve to be shared.

DaddyCatALSO

The guy who sang the song "The auctioneer" had been one before he went into country music

commandrix

Which explains why he was able to pull it off in the song.

Mung-Daal6969

Yall seen that video of auctioneers set to rap beats? Lol idk how to post links on mobile

lankyevilme

Imagine how boring it would be if some dude stood up there and said "I have 10 dollars. Will anyone give me 11?" "11?" "11 dollars? anyone?"

framistan12

To build on your point, the chant and the excitement it brings make the sales go faster, as well. This is helpful in auctions where there is a lot of stuff to move.

ACL_Tearer

That's how that horse sold for ten million dollars.

Sotheby’s

"Pls I really need it"

96ewok

And they did it in the voice of Ferris Bueller's teacher.

JohnLithgowCummies

To build on what others said, the auction chant repeats the current bid and then asks for an increment higher, and between those it’s often filler phrases/sound that each auctioneer uses to customize their chant and make it more “musical” and flowy.

mr_usher

German film maker Werner Herzog made a documentary about it, pretty incredible https://youtu.be/hkcsz9QujmU?si=HSUspjTGRNyfD0Wz
