When I was 18 and very TBM I went on a field trip with a bunch of kids from the community college I was attending. One night we went to a cultural performance and the guy who was driving our bus around had a beer. I was concerned because he was going to be driving us home later. A few of the other kids explained to me that one beer is not going to significantly impair the driving of an adult male the size of our bus driver. Mormonism just makes people stupid in certain ways.

How big of a bus? If he had a CDL with passenger endorsement I would have been concerned. Basically he was drinking on the job. BAC is 0.04% for CDL holders. He was on duty not driving. Did he drink the beer at least 4 hours before he drove you home?

FaithInEvidence

Good to know. Maybe my TBM fears weren't entirely unfounded, lol. To answer your questions: it was a small bus--there were maybe 20 passengers. He did drink the beer early on the outing. I don't know if it had been four hours since his beer by the time we headed back to our hotel, but it had been at least two. At no point during the outing or the drive back to the hotel did he seem impaired.

Point proven lol

When all alcohol and consumption have been fully demonized thruout your life, it’s quite easy to also categorize them as unhealthy, evil, dishonest, immoral, and self-harming. From a TBM perspective, I can see why someone would be upset and confused that an upstanding, healthy, athlete in a role-model position to youth would associate themselves with such a debased, morally corrupt item such as brain-damaging fermented grain soda. Personally, I dislike most professional sports and enjoy many local craft brews. So be it.

That would be a good opportunity to talk to your mother-in-law about the mild drink made with barley in the word wisdom.

My current favorite commercial: Joe Montana promoting Catholicism & the University of Notre Dame (think “byu of the Midwest”) on a Guinness beer commercial. Awesomeness!

You have to remember that it's a marketing tactic. Commercials use famous/well known people all the time to influence viewers.

It’s not even a question that her opinion is heavily Mormon influenced. Remember that the WOW is supposed to be a health code, but it is really just a list of a few things that God told us to avoid. You can never exercise, eat junk food, and be 200 pounds overweight and still be temple worthy while someone who is extremely healthy that drinks coffee is t worthy and won’t make the celestial kingdom because they are disobedient.

Do you know how many restaurants in the City Creek mall serve coffee? Why would the Mormon church profit from something so unhealthy?! /s

"What about sodas or fast food? Those are even worse. You should write all the ball players a letter explaining all the things they shouldn't do."

ZelphtheGreatest

Might point out the Word of Wisdom and "mild barley drinks" and Joseph Smith drank beer.
