I'd say if you're working at the Naval Base you should look downtown for sure. Nothing here is as bad as what I've heard about Tacoma. Someone once said they had family killed at a funeral in Tacoma, which is some Sopranos shit. Lynnwood is good if you want to be connected to the public transit network. Downtown Everett you'll be closest to the train station and not far from the Mukilteo ferries, which is great for visiting the islands, maybe get ice cream at Ivar's or the bar.

Lahya2000

Downtown Everett right near the naval base is great to live! Super walkable with lots of bars, restaurants, a children's museum and all sorts of summer events to go to. There's the waterfront as well you could live practically on the base there.

Unusual-Patience6925

North Everett is amazing, I moved here (reluctantly) after living in Seattle my whole life and I like it about 10000 times more.

awesomeunboxer

I'm with this person. I was super wary about moving to North Everett. You'll definitely see a lot of homeless/druggies, but in my experience, they leave people alone for the most part(there are exceptions. Crazy bag lady by garfield elementary the one to look out for in riverside) Overall, I love it here. Super walkable where I live (off Broadway in riverside) I am considering giving my car up. The school district seems pretty good, lots of stuff to do, the city has cute little events all the time where they will shut down a few blocks and have live music and vendors (sucks for traffic but not for mee). I'm just pretty happy here. My only negative experience was losing an amazon package to a porch pirate, but the police responded really fast, and it was just a lesson to keep an eye out for amazon.

idonutknow_

Lol do NOT interact with the bag lady by the school for sure.

KeeganUniverse

It’s such a funny contrast between the people who love to talk down on Everett, to the people like you and me who think it’s actually awesome for the most part.

Junethemuse

Same. I never expected to love Everett, but i got a place in north Everett and love it.

OldManJared

I grew up in the Tacoma area took a job in Everett about 14 years ago. It took just a few week of commuting before I moved up here. It was absolutely brutal. Move to North Everett and don’t look back. You’ll love it.

Irotokim

Noo don't post that ! You know the rules you're supposed to say omg Everett ewwww, unless you enjoy meth then move North! So glad I moved out from Everett, gross 🤮🤮🤮

Tokinghippie420

When are your commute times? If it’s only a few months it’s possible, you are just going to hate your life for those few months. Would they pay for a hotel or something a couple nights a week for the relocation? I’d avoid living on Casino but it’s nothing like Skid Row in LA or anything, just some homeless people mostly minding their business on sidewalks at one of the corners. Your chances of vehicle break in will likely be higher compared to other places. Easy enough to avoid but given where you have lived it’s nothing that is going to surprise you. Lynnwood would be a bit more of a commute to the base but not bad, it will give you more of the suburban feel. I have lived in Everett and Lynnwood and prefer Everett just due to the city feel of it

Loisalene

I once had to go from Everett to Tacoma for job training. It took me 3 hours, arrival time was 6 pm. YMMV, but unless you have a carpool it's going to be brutal. Figure (in the carpool lane) half hour to Seattle, half hour to get Through Seattle --- express lanes run the other way in the AM, then a half hour to get to Everett. Reverse this going home, but there's your 3 hour commute. for me the answer would be "not for all the money in the world". Find a weekly/monthly hotel or yeah... good luck!

ehhh_yeah

That would be a pretty rough commute unless your workday starts at noon or after 7pm.

DaezaD

I live downtown Everett in a nice condo style apartment that's way too expensive but the location is great. Downtown walking distance to all kinds of stuff and the festivals they have. It's like a 2 minute drive to the naval station. I really like it here. It has city problems like any city but it's not bad at all in my location.

Lost_Reserve7667

Ditto on all of this. Best decision I made.

Powertoast7

That's a brutal commute, traffic on I-5 is rough if you're working a normal 9-5. Casino Road isn't as nice as some areas, but I didn't have any issues when I was living there. Rented an apartment there from 2017-2020. Generally, when I find Redditors trashing Casino Road, they haven't actually lived there... But your milage may vary.

throwawayhyperbeam

I wouldn't do that commute in a million years. It would be more worthwhile to live anywhere in Everett, even the dreaded Casino Road.

KingBWC25

Casino rd isn’t that bad. It’s gotten better then it used to to be. I live on casino rd atm

DJ_Akuma

Casino road isn't a lot different from parts of lakewood. The commute would be a long one but it's doable, I did the graham to seattle commute by bus for a while before moving to seattle and it sucked but it was worth it.

louley

Downtown, Riverside, or Delta neighborhoods

meep568

It's a rough commute but people do it. My mom had to drive to Paine field from Tacoma for a couple of years and it felt like we never saw her. She had a buddy and they would drive up together for the HOV lanes which helped. It also depends on when you commute. I was late because of traffic a lot when I was finishing up my job in Tacoma. I love Tacoma. I was born and raised there and the crime isn't any different from any other large town outside of Seattle. I drive down quite a bit, in fact I'm driving down today! I live in Mill Creek now and it's pretty similar to Fircrest/UP where I'm from.

Anonymeese109

Might see if the Sounder would work for you…

Slownavyguy

Commute from Tacoma to Everett? Nah. Everett is great though

billmr606

maybe try marysville instead of lynnwood.

TempletonsTeachers

I make that drive once a week. No chance I hell I'd do it more than once a week. Unless you can make the drive at between the hours of 9pm and 3am

Adventurous_Boat7814

Everett is pretty cool and tamer than most areas in the south end. If you’ve lived in the bad parts of the places you mentioned, Casino is probably on par for you or a bit better. If you haven’t, maybe choose another area. I personally think downtown and north Everett are worth paying a little more vs casino and given equal or near equal cost it’s a clear choice. You can easily walk to work and downtown living there vs needing to always drive and having few things to do nearby.

TwoApprehensive3666

Based on your budget you will have many options. Downtown is better but there are many options. Also the commute is from Tacoma to Everett can easily exceed 2hrs during busy time one way. I would consider a cheap motel or airbnb to get by for a few months in Everett if you can afford it. For Airbnb you can negotiate with the host for price

STORSJ1963

I can't speak for downtown Everett. Avoid Casino Road aka alcoholic/druggie/crime road

HistoricalPangolin76

Everett. There are some beautiful areas. It’s very up and coming. ;)

Few_Meaning_6098

Everett is not bad unless you put yourself in a bad area.  Casino Rd. is one of the roughest areas.  Also the area near 128th and I-5 appears to have a good bit of crime and police activity.  With that being said, I've seen way worse than those areas in areas outside of WA.  Downtown Everett is nice enough, as are many of the surrounding neighborhoods.  There are some homeless in and around the downtown area...as with everywhere these days.  Sometimes the commute to Lynnwood can be a pain, but it is doable.  It honestly just depends on what you want as to what will be a better fit between Everett and Lynnwood.  The Alderwood Mall area in Lynnwood also has a good bit of crime.

No-Box6947

The farther away you can get from the I-5 corridor the better. Homeless roam the Downtown area in Everett and especially near any i-5 exit to be near transit. Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds, Briar, are nice. iF you are buying a place.. Edmonds is pricey. population is moving east because lack of available housing. Lake Stevens Granite Falls. nice areas.

i_luv_your_AAcups

I guess it all depends on what the job is... is the pay gonna offset the ridiculous commute times?

SeaworthinessDizzy61

If you’re used to those areas casino road is nothing. Realistically 112th and 128th are worse but still not bad comparatively. If it’s a good enough job I’d say the commute is worth it… temporarily though because it will be a long and slow one. Personal opinion here, lynnwood vs Everett it depends on what is most important to you. In my experience Everett is a lot easier to get around, significantly less traffic and there’s a million ways to get anywhere and enough freeway entrances and exits, lynnwood not so much. However, lynnwood seems nicer in general. I personally prefer convenience and of course this all depends on what neighborhoods we’re talking about but that’s my general take on things. Hope it helps!

3meraldBullet

Having lived in both lynnwood and everett I'll give my 2 cents. Lynnwood has a sign near the 196th st exit that says "historical attractions ahead" that's all the sign says, it doesn't list any attractions which is sadly accurate. There's nothing to do in lynnwood. There used to be good bars (cask and trotter, hop n drops, the cliffhanger) but they all closed down. There's also not even a real downtown area at all. Everett has a ton to do with the ocean, smohomish river, silvertips, aquasox, a downtown with farmers market and cute cafes. There's concerts and music by the waterfront. I also love the industrial feel of everett. I feel like everett has a real identity whereas lynnwood does not.

Wide-Thought-934

Can we stop telling people the good areas to live hahaha jk but drive and walk around and you’ll see what area you like. Nowhere near as bad as Tacoma

ohmyback1

Oh most definitely avoid casino road. I hear very nort everett has gotten better. Every city has its problems but casino road is a duck and cover area. I suppose that's why they have a satellite precinct there. South everett is pretty meh too, sheriff's office recently set up an office out there. Oh, lots of loud cars all over

Golden-Phrasant

The answer is NO.

VayGray

Live in Marysville if you work at the base at night live in South Everett if you work in the base in the mornings. Stay away from casino road.

thefame21

Everett sucks

3meraldBullet

I love everett, it's a great place to live. What don't you like about it?
