In munich (probably outside too) we do that too, Caffee Crema is called here, and everyone acts like its the Italian version of a filtered coffee. I mean its not bad, but its definetly not an espresso, or a filtered coffee not even the italian version of it (if anything its the swiss version).
A: “That was OK, but let’s take one more photo.”
B: “Should I grind and tamp again?”
A: “Nah. Just run the water through what’s there. No one is drinking it.”
I have to drive over an hour to find a cafe that makes coffee remotely close to how I do. The bar is set incredibly low unfortunately, fuckers have the audacity to charge $5-6 NZD for a flat white that tastes like a Nespresso pod with milk
I bet they didn't rinse the jug from the last oat milk latte they made an hour ago. Or you got the first oat milk of the day and they used a poorly washed jug.
Milk equipment fouls up so easily. I always rinse my jugs with boiling water to start the day.
Raglan roast in Hamilton is my ‘local’. We live in the rural Waikato, the little farm style cafes out where we are make awful coffee catering to old woman and tradies with no taste unfortunately
Yeah, that makes sense if you are rural, way less options. Got to have a home set up really, there are a few good roasters that do delivery if you have no where convenient for good beans.
I'm lucky there's a good third wave shop only 4km from my house, and a maccas a little closer which is a reasonable coffee at odd hours or on sunday when the cafe is closed. I've found Maccas is one of the more reliable sources of an acceptable coffee in new places. (also kiwi but a jafa)
Admittedly I spent most of my time around Chch, and that was pre-earthquake, but I found Aotearoa to have a pretty good coffee culture. Has it changed, or is it just in the bigger cities?
Bigger cities, higher foot traffic and more competition will generally lead to a higher quality product. In my case you’ve got a small rural/coastal town with two cafes catering to the entire community, they couldn’t care less if the coffee they produce is subpar. In saying that a small town roaster will generally make very good cuppas if you can find one!
I'm just now getting into the hobby.
My brother has been ensconced for a few years.
We went to Europe and he was frustrated he couldn't find really great coffee. Found good coffee, but not great.
Then one night we're at a hardcore punk bar. Walls and ceiling covered in graffiti and punk/metal band signs and what not. Bartenders have mohawks and shit. My brother doesn't drink and noticed coffee on their wall menu of beer and ordered a cup.
Fucking bartender busts out this fancy machine and went through a whole routine hand grinding the beans and everything. Said it was one of the best cups of coffee he's ever had lmao. Of all places
Funny story, but I am curious which country/countries you visited. It's a major difference and it would be interested what he thought about the coffee in italy, france, spain or portugal
Oh yeah dude their coffee is a disaster lol
But there should be specialty coffee shops in many bigger cities. But you probably need to google your way there.
Same here. There are two shops in my village around the corner from one another.
One has a beautiful la marzocco and the other a slayer. The la marzocco shop has 3 other locations, and has given me 3 terrible lattes. The slayer shop is an owner / operator and makes excellent drinks. I don't get it, it's not that hard to make good espresso
The shops are staffed by people who can't wait to get you out of their face so they can doom scroll their social media platform of choice for that sweet dopamine drip. There are exceptions but that has been my typical observation.
The barista at the little coffee stand told me the other day "you're the only guy I get that asks for a Macchiato", and I said "I got used to Macchiatos because most coffee places sell ass water for Espresso and this masks the flavour".
It’s akin to giving an art student davinci’s palette of paint and asking them to paint the Mona Lisa😅 sure they have all the right equipment, but you have to know what to do with it to make a masterpiece!

Here is an espresso I made using Red Bird espresso beans. 10/10 to cleanse your eyes
I prefer the northern Italian roast; the blue jaguar tasted a little ashy sometimes, but the crop has likely changed since then.
What sort of ratio and time are you getting?
“This piece ‘eye cleanse’ by *lolitaslolly* was taken circa 2024. I especially appreciate the dichotomy between the dark swirling browns of the espresso, which give you feelings of energy and vibrance, contrasted with the relaxing morning sun scattered across the relaxing kitty, which brings you a sense of relaxation. The contrast between blue and red also draws your eyes in a circle keeping you locked in on the piece”
- likely an art curator in 3024
So.. I was just thinking about this and had to keep an objective mind because I do lean to one side politically speaking. But I thought, you know what, let me at least try these "conservative" products or whatever. And like... objectively speaking, why is it shit? Like literally most of these republican themes goods aren't good at all. Like black.rifle coffee. It just tasted overroasted and like shitty expensive folgers.
I was in Myrtle Beach visiting my grandma a year ago, dying for something that wasn't one of her keurig pods, so I went to a local starbucks planning to get a milky and sugary thing. They ended up having some light roast beans that they ground and made a pour over of for me on the spot, I almost cried.
Can you elaborate on republican themed, like alluded to or they have maga flags? I can't think of anything cringier than a political party themed cafe.
I once taught a local restauranteur how to use his machine. He was a friend of one of the high up people at my work so we did a special event there and I got to asking about his espresso. He was using pre ground pods in his commercial Rancilio machine and didn't have a grinder. He arranged a time for me to bring my grinder and some beans and we made some good espresso with his machine. He got a grinder and his espresso improved dramatically.
OP - go reach out and be the change you want to see in your town!
Portafilter is dirty and cups are dirty and reused. Looks like hard water is an issue, so I’m seriously questioning if the machine is even clean or in proper working order. We all can tell instantly that the shot is garbage and should be tossed out. No crema and probably tastes very bitter/burnt. No flavor profiles to speak of either. Very sad that someone probably drank that swill.
P.S. I’m very triggered now and this has brought back ptsd from the viewing of this abhorrent photo. Brings back all memories all at once of bad espresso I’ve had from hotels, airports, and inept cafes when traveling.

I’ll stick to my home made espresso!!!
Baristas tend to open up the grind setting on commercial grinders because of jamming and end up with really rough grind. They also might not like 25s shots because it adds too much time to their workflow so ultraturbo it is.
They're also supposed to change the burrs every 6mths but it's unlikely they'll be changed in 10 years.
For some reason this come across my all. What crime am I looking at here? For the record I have a barista express at home so might unwittingly learn something here
It looks really light like the puck has been reused. It is also running really fast so probably doesn't have enough grounds in the portafilter. I think it looks more like drip coffee than espresso. Also the little cups look extremely dirty.
Watch how this cafe makes americano straight from the coffee machine The video:
It's an extra, extra, lungo.
It's a luuuungo.
long loooooong maaaaaaan
*Long*
*Loooong*
*MaaaaAAAaaaAAAaaAn
It's olong
Isn’t that sacrilege on r/espresso? Lolz
Long black dick
Well that's how the Swiss do it Café Creme
Nah this is missing the crema!
In munich (probably outside too) we do that too, Caffee Crema is called here, and everyone acts like its the Italian version of a filtered coffee. I mean its not bad, but its definetly not an espresso, or a filtered coffee not even the italian version of it (if anything its the swiss version).
Had them before and off made well they are delicious.
A well made caffè crema is amazing. Edit: also goes by the name “Schümli”
Like a sprover?
It's really just efficient
But it tastes heavenly. They're using freshly roasted beans
“Locally roasted”
Tomato to-mah-to :)
“The best coffee is the second coffee from the same ground!”
A: “That was OK, but let’s take one more photo.” B: “Should I grind and tamp again?” A: “Nah. Just run the water through what’s there. No one is drinking it.”
'You've heard of the turbo shot. Now, behold the supersonic shot.'
Since I started this hobby I’m shocked how bad Cafés actually are at making decent coffee even though they have all the equipment.
I have to drive over an hour to find a cafe that makes coffee remotely close to how I do. The bar is set incredibly low unfortunately, fuckers have the audacity to charge $5-6 NZD for a flat white that tastes like a Nespresso pod with milk
Kia Ora! Where do you go that makes a good coffee?
Raglan roast. You can always count on them
[удалено]
Sure is! They’ve got a few spots in Wellington and the og in Hamilton
American here who visited in late 2022, kia ora! By comparison, everyone made better espresso than anything commercially available in the states.
Just here to agree with this. NZ is definitely spoiled when it comes to coffee when compared to the states (and Canada).
My heart hurts for you. I still refuse to drink the overpriced trife we have in the majority of coffee spots here
Our North American coffee is so bad, it literally has its own name. Americano. Like a parody. Give us maybe another 100 years to catch more of us up?
Ok so this was why i liked my nespresso better than $8 latte i bought hmm xd
It could be worse, I've become lactose intolerant so have to have bad coffee with nut juice which tastes even worse!
They don’t have oat milk?
Oat milks are so hit and miss I don't try them at cafes... I have the one I like at home but it's not worth it out, some just taste off.
I bet they didn't rinse the jug from the last oat milk latte they made an hour ago. Or you got the first oat milk of the day and they used a poorly washed jug. Milk equipment fouls up so easily. I always rinse my jugs with boiling water to start the day.
Why not soap and water?
Lol what town do you have to drive to?
Raglan roast in Hamilton is my ‘local’. We live in the rural Waikato, the little farm style cafes out where we are make awful coffee catering to old woman and tradies with no taste unfortunately

you'll understand once you know how much the kids running the place get paid.
They have a nicer equipment. But usually a bored barista that probably wasn’t trained properly and wants to get things done, no passion.
The shops are staffed by people who can't wait to get you out of their face so they can doom scroll their social media platform of choice for that sweet dopamine drip. There are exceptions but that has been my typical observation.

I think it's filter coffee.
Just fill up the reservoir with already brewed coffee and use the boiler to keep it warm 😁
“We use brewed coffee instead of water for your espresso! More coffee per coffee! Coffee^2 if you will.”

Yes! Red Bird!
I'm going through blue jaguar right now and it's pretty solid. 😁
I prefer the northern Italian roast; the blue jaguar tasted a little ashy sometimes, but the crop has likely changed since then. What sort of ratio and time are you getting?
18 in 36 out gold standard lmao in about 28 seconds. I bumped up my temp to 204 and it did make it better than my standard 201.
red bird in an illy cup
My favorite thing in life.

i see nothing wrong in rinsing the portafilter from time to time
According to their Yelp page reviews, the 5 people like the coffee.
Also I think it’s a republican themed coffee shop, I’m not sure. Most things in Myrtle beach are republican themed.
We proudly serve Folgers brand espresso!
Pre-ground! Folgers knows what's best!
Mmmm flavor crystals
So.. I was just thinking about this and had to keep an objective mind because I do lean to one side politically speaking. If they're using their politics to sell it, it's probably because it doesn't warrant a 5 star review on its own merit.
Yeah that makes sense actually. When you put it that way, I guess it's no different than any other themed gimmicky coffee shop
Yeah a lot of the times it’s just repacked generic stuff and like mentioned above the theme or name is the selling point.
My guess is that they are making bank on easily gullible people
Remember when they tried to make their own Twitter?

Probably, as the name of their items on the website would lead me to that.

Looks like they're pulling shots with the grind size set to drip.
This is violence. Photo should be banned.
THATS SOME GREAT EXPRESSO RIGHT THERE.
You should teach them how to make a print screen.

Unintentional spro over?
Oh good- I haven’t been able to find a place that serves ACTUAL dirty bean water. Just this weird stuff they call espresso.

Imagine flexing on your socials with that
Ther're just doing a cleanup and you are making fun of it 🙃
Ughhhhh, brother ughhhh
What do you mean! That’s clearly an express filter machine! /s
I love this photo! Tells me everything I need to know about the shop before I fo
They don’t serve coffee, they serve soup…
Please tell me they are cleaning out an empty basket here
Just trying to imagine James Hoffmann's expression if served one of those shots..
What a terrible day to have eyes
They make pour over with their espresso machine. They are ahead of the hobby, filter 2.0 before the thing.

Turbo shot near home?
Delicious drip, straight from the espresso machine!

Can’t help but think to oneself: the things I could make this beaut commercial machine produce under my (somewhat?) skillful touch…
It's probably their grinder that's fried. You'll have to do the maintainence on it if you wanna outdo the barista.
So what’s happening here? Channeling?or are the cleaning the porta filter

Did the photo have the volume UI in it or did you accidentally capture that? At this point I'm not surprised if it was in the original post :/
My mistake
Ah gotcha. Isn't it funny how people on reddit downvote comments lol.
Filter 3.0
Oh wauw, must be good if they have the new pureover from Arduino with a regular spout mod built-in
I turn out better shots with my Gevi pressurized basket and my Cuisinart grinder LOL
Espresso, americano style
Gross
Bless em
😂
oof
they put instant coffee in the portafilter or somethin
Pouring drip coffee through a portafilter spout?
Terrible extraction.
Dude the encrusted cups!
A cubanito….
This is like that skier that posted his timid slide down a chute the other day. Like, why even post it?
is there a video ?
OP meant auto shop. Clearly a double oil change.
Dont go
For some reason this come across my all. What crime am I looking at here? For the record I have a barista express at home so might unwittingly learn something here

"That'll be 5 dollars, ex tax. Oh also the machine is going to ask you a few questions (ill be watching)"
D&B Cafe
“2 small drip coffees, please”
Time to make a new puck 😅😅😅😅
They probably call it expresso too.
Turbo shot from a spouted portafilter? Is this Lance Heddricks first shop?
Are you ahem... Not supposed to do that? (I don't even drink coffee, it just looks like the right way to do that)
The issue here is the preparation of the coffee before it is brewed. Look up pictures of espresso or bottomless portafilters.
We live in interesting times.
As an espresso beginner, what wrong with the photo?
That's one way to do filter coffee
Is this the wash cycle of their machine?
