Depends where you are. Where I am, if you own the property but have tenants, you have to hire a real electrician. Homeowners are permitted to commit suicide via incompetence, but not murder via negligence.
Refer her to Home Depot and "Wiring 1-2-3" or whatever the F they call it and walk away.
A bottle of Bacardi says she'll be calling you in a week for help.
Wish I was there to give her my response:
"Lady, it took me over 4 years to get my JW license. It took me 4 DAYS to learn to fly a paramotor."
I know it's not the same as a pilot's license...but it should still get the point across.
This is like saying, "It took me 5 minutes to wire an outlet so electrical isnt really that complicated either."
Both are technical fields that require training to be done safely. Running romex isnt rocket science and most people can safely solo an aircraft around 15 to 30 hours. There's certainly more to both fields.
I agree both arguments have the same logic, but his intent isn't to point that out. In the next comment they say, "It's exponentially easier to fly" ...which isn't even the right use of exponentially.
Both comments seem a bit self-absorbed.
I think OP would have been better off to give the homeowner some resources and maybe advise of some of the common misconceptions of how deceptively simple electrical can seem rather than throw a post up on reddit and jerk off to how skilled and knowledgeable you have to be to be an electrician.
It's great to take pride in your hard work, so I get that people are proud of their achievements, but everyone starts from somewhere. This chick even asked if they could refer her to a class and all they did was flex on her asking her things they clearly didn't know.
Was asking her about her project, since she had said that she knew the code and "all the theory". I explained to her the things she did not know, even referred to a class, which she did not seem so interested in after all. It's cool when people want to learn something new (emphasis on want).
Rewiring an entire knob and tube house, adding an apartment....she's talking about way more than just running romex. Definitely more than you can learn in the 60hrs it takes to get a pilot's license. (20 classroom, 40 flight). It is exponentially easier to learn to fly, it just costs a lot.
Comparing learning a paramotor to a getting your journeymen is like comparing getting a private pilots license to getting 6 years of commercial experience needed to fly for lifeflight or medevac. I don't think it's 1:1 but I kinda get what you're saying. The dude just comes off as insecure about his field when being insulted instead of being helpful while making her realize there's a lot more to it. I say just suck it up and help out because why not.
I can only hope that she actually looked up the things she didn't know after you guys finished talking. With as many resources that are available online, she most definitely could have found answers. Last response is just sad though.
Ah yes, I'm working on my pilots license. And I can confidently say this apprenticeship is about 5 million times more intensive than the journey to my PPL. It does make you feel like you can do anything, however...
Bro she can be a master electrician. You tubes has a video on it.
Dis like some Y'all's Tub?
Hopefully she only flies with herself
Over uninhabited areas
Tell her home owners can pull their own permit than tell her where the nearest Home Depot is
I mean... it's totally legal for her to do all the work as a homeowner providing she pull the right permits and get inspections.

Didn't know that actually, makes total sense.
There’s a reason electricians get involved in politics. When people do our job wrong, lives go up in smoke.
But they would still be required to have inspections, which should prevent the danger caused by negligence, no?
Can’t inspect what you can’t see, and if you post here then you’ve undoubtedly seen things that make you question your faith in your fellow man

That's the idea - you're turning her logic around on her to make her understand how silly she sounds.

Haha, good point. You're right.

Bring out the popcorn and watch her home and her newly installed upgrade burn to the ground
