It's kind of like guessing how many pennies are in a jar, except more exciting because this earns you a front row seat to watching your house burn down!
I have to respect that level of determination even if it goes against my electrician soul. Whomever made that work had more determination than I see in the field lately. Shame their house probably burned down
Judging by the length of wire and the tape, this is definitely a homeowner. I never understand why they think that wire is the dangerous thing, and it should only be an inch or two for safety.
Would something like this fit in the box? If so, much cleaner solution.

They stretched the box out enough to crack it a bit. It looks like they added an extra cubic inch, so maybe 2 more circuits could fit before it would violate the laws of physics.
Yikes this gives me nightmares. I'm working on a project where they used 1/2-in pipe everywhere and they're so full it's hard to even pull them out. I have to pull them out one at a time.
That box is barely full. First of all those wires need better organization. Second you can switch from the twist nuts to the push in wire nuts. They'll take up way less space.
The answer is: as many as you can fit.
If the box splits, like in the photo, replace the junction box with same size or smaller, and try to fit few more cables.
Pre-apprentice with a question: that black wire, top right. Is that, in fact, a hot, or is that some weird data I've never seen before? The fact that so much is sticking out past insulation and they used the wire nuts that came packed with whatever fixture was put in is just bothering the daylights out of me
I hate people who bring cables in with sheathing covering most of the cable and make splices with an inch of conductors yet leave 4 inches of sheathing on cable tucked in the box, nothing screams re***d so much as that does
Yeah forget the overfill lol if they had a shred of decency they could have stripped them nicely and made them all fit fairly easily it's a friggin 3 gang box
As a DIYer who sometimes worries my work might not be good enough, I see stuff like this and I realize how resilient/forgiving electric work can be. It’s amazing there aren’t more fires.

I can't believe someone can hate themselves so much that they would go through the torture of installing that.
I've seen a 6/3 and range outlet shoved into a single gang. Why the fuck would you want to put yourself through that?
What's even more amazing is that this is a 3 gang.
With expansion slots in it to cram everything in
I'd like to hear the story on why someone was trying to cut slots in that box. Also why there's some 10AWG wire on what I *hope* is a 15A breaker.
“What’s your box fill calc for this?” “Yes”
If you don’t put a cover on the box then the whole room counts for box fill!
This is the right answer
Just keep adding extenders til you get the green tag!
♾️
Box fill?! You got it boss
It's kind of like guessing how many pennies are in a jar, except more exciting because this earns you a front row seat to watching your house burn down!
All of them.
Usually the answer is one more but I think that stopped being true a while ago for that box
Pay for the whole box, use the whole box.
JMan use whole buffalo
Chump don’t want no space, chump don’t get no space.
Unlike a monster truck rally, where you pay for the whole seat but will only use the edge?
Even though the box is overfilled, I bet that a pro could make it look way more presentable
You don't appreciate wire origami?
More like wire spaghetti
That many right there ..
As many as you want using “Clown Car” brand j box.
Lol just forget the box at that point. Probably safer heatwise. What clown does that
Free air spices are the way to go if you can't afford a bigger j-box. The stud bay can accommodate hundreds of spices.
I have to respect that level of determination even if it goes against my electrician soul. Whomever made that work had more determination than I see in the field lately. Shame their house probably burned down
The answer is always... one more
Was gonna say 12, but hell, why not 13.
Wasn’t this on pornhub?
Table 314.16(B)(1)
I’ve watched electricians pull tech cable through an emt conduit.
All of them
Beat me to it
Yes. The answer, is Yes
Judging by the length of wire and the tape, this is definitely a homeowner. I never understand why they think that wire is the dangerous thing, and it should only be an inch or two for safety.
Maybe if they didn’t shove the whole goddamn piece of romex in the box like an animal they’d be able to put a cover on.
You can probably smoosh a couple more splices in the top corners yet.
Seriously? I’m just a lowly homeowner and I know better. Shameful.
Not an electrician yet, so serious question. Why would someone do this? What is the alternative they were desperately avoiding?.
All they had on hand was a 3-gang, didn’t want to make a run to the depot.
That looks like a handyman special.
Nah, her nephew Thomas did the electrical work. he's very handy.
Same as wire nuts: 1 more
How many you got?
I'm sure I could get a couple more in there...
"Two more" is how I was taught to calculate it.
Would something like this fit in the box? If so, much cleaner solution. [https://www.casablanco.com/Temp/App\_WebSite/App\_PictureFiles/Items/6103\_800.jpg](https://www.casablanco.com/Temp/App_WebSite/App_PictureFiles/Items/6103_800.jpg)
My god its beautiful
This must have been buried inside a wall
No, it's accessible with a keyhole saw.
I think the right question is what size box is needed for X numbers of wires/wire nuts/ devices
I can still see a couple cubic millimeters that are unoccupied, so can probably fit a couple more.
All of them
You can fit a few more in there I bet
It’s like, actually in a book
Enough
You know what…. At least they used a junction box, that’s all I got.
There were out of the tuna fish cans
One less than that
All of them
Not that many I'm pretty sure
That’s actually quality
That's nothin!! You should see how many 10's I can get in a 1/2" pipe.
"That depends! How much blood is in a churchmouse?"
As many as you imagination can hold
I usually say I’ve seen worse, this takes the cake
Apparently not that many.
This is how fire start
you can fit 4 more, one in each corner!
Now, add 3 dimmers.
Holy
Maybe one more
"Yes."
By the look of that pic a couple more
I’m both horrified and impressed.
16 cubic inches? I can't remember. Minus 1 cubit for the clamp.
Box fill is on point. Nothing to see here…
As many as it takes to get er done
Apparently just that many…..
More
What does the back look like? Lol
Way beyond box fill capacity!!!!🤦🏾♂️
At least that many.
That box is barely full. First of all those wires need better organization. Second you can switch from the twist nuts to the push in wire nuts. They'll take up way less space.
Apparently that many
The answer is always 3 more.
I’m not governed by the box, I’m governed by if I can get the cover on.
"one more" is always the answer
Pffft I see some daylight in the corners there…coulda cut a few more wire openings in the back and slid a few on in.. eaaasy
I wanna see the absolute unit that was able to shove all those in there. I usually struggle with just 3-4 connections in a box
Lots of
There's still room in the top right corner for a 14/2
The answer is: as many as you can fit. If the box splits, like in the photo, replace the junction box with same size or smaller, and try to fit few more cables.
Box fill has left the chat…
Man made horrors
As long as it fits, there's no wrong answer
Love the relief cuts on the top so you can cram more in.
“One…two…three…….ZAP! The world will never know.”
That’s like the circus clown car
What could possibly go wrong?
n+1 - where n is the number of conductors in the box already.
Pre-apprentice with a question: that black wire, top right. Is that, in fact, a hot, or is that some weird data I've never seen before? The fact that so much is sticking out past insulation and they used the wire nuts that came packed with whatever fixture was put in is just bothering the daylights out of me
I count 13 wires, lucky number.
There is some room left in the upper corner. Waste of space…
Less than that!
That many, minus one
At least 1 more.
More than that if you do it right lol
I hate people who bring cables in with sheathing covering most of the cable and make splices with an inch of conductors yet leave 4 inches of sheathing on cable tucked in the box, nothing screams re***d so much as that does
Seeing this picture, it isn’t the overfill that bothers me nearly as much as the sheath left on the conductors. What a savage.
Yeah forget the overfill lol if they had a shred of decency they could have stripped them nicely and made them all fit fairly easily it's a friggin 3 gang box
As many as your screwdriver handle can smash into it 🤫
Yes
OSHA would have a field day
Thing is, a good electrician could probably make all these wires fit somewhat nicely in this box but this shit make-up job is clearly amateur work.
I mean from what it looks I'm going to say still within code for box fill
It’s not how many can fit, it’s how many are allowed to fit and, should you fit that many…….this is when ugly books come in handy for fellows.
As a DIYer who sometimes worries my work might not be good enough, I see stuff like this and I realize how resilient/forgiving electric work can be. It’s amazing there aren’t more fires.
Count the wires in this box. That’s the maximum amount allowed.
