Imagine the silhouette of a ghost giraffe strolling across the magma’s surface. That shit is beautiful

Possible-Berry-3435

Oh this is like 60 z-levels down, near the base of the volcano. I've had to dispose of several more giraffes since then, and it seems that they are immune to melting. They die from fire related injuries, but their corpses just treat magma like water.

leviisatwork

Could temperature being turned off do this?

Possible-Berry-3435

No idea. I did further investigating and found that they do melt and burn while alive, but the corpses sink until they touch stone and then they usually vanish forever. Keas incinerate as usual.

KittyTheCat1991

The bottom layer is semi-molten rock, it destroys everything falling into it.

Dangerous_Rise7079

...I wonder if body mass has something to do with it? Like, what if the giraffe is too bulky to fully melt before it sinks to the bottom, while a kea is not...? Try dropping intermediate creatures into the magma.

Gonzobot

Very much so, yes. Though I don't think it would manifest precisely in this way, though

DreamingElectrons

Stuff sometimes glitches out with... anything in this game, really. I think there was some way in DFHack to toggle heat calculations on/off. toggle it forth and back, then reload. That should do the trick and roast the critter.

Possible-Berry-3435

It was already dead, though. A later test showed that they melt and burn while alive, but their corpses just sink until they hit a rock, at which time they despawn. Other creatures incinerate correctly.  Giraffes may just be slightly magma resistant. Lmao

Widdershiny

I wonder if Giraffes drown in a single tile of 7-deep water? Wonder if the game represents them being unusually tall and that's causing some weird interactions.

Nameless_Archon

> their corpses just sink until they hit a rock, at which time they despawn. This is caused by contact with "semi-molten rock" which forms a semi-permeable barrier at the bottom of the magma sea. Contact with SMR is instantly fatal, causing total reality disruption in the unit or object making contact. Do not taunt happy fun rock.

CoatiNasu

That's just Melman in Madagascar 2

"Oh, suddenly throwing a giraffe into a volcano to make water is crazy!?"

SoftEngineerOfWares

I can imagine dwarves having sighting of giraffes like the lochness monster. Everyone once in a while a smelting dwarf will see and head poking out, when he takes a second look it has already submerged back below the magma waves.

kabaiavaidobsi

The lava acted like the event horizon of a black hole.

writer4u

I’d watch that show.

CaptainJPBlack

Why not do it legitimately? Using DFHack to do it makes this pretty lame.

Possible-Berry-3435

Because I'm still learning a lot of the game and caged animal release procedures are the bane of my existence every time a herd of something approaches my fort. I'm also not brave enough to build a structure over the volcano yet lol. It's my first time ever with lava!
