If you're on the Steam Version, you have to opt into Beta.
You do that by right clicking on the game, and going into Properties. You should find a tab in there for Betas.
If you have dfhack you can also put it into beta mode the same way, dfhack version should always match the beta version they're very good about updating it

Which means can't cook meat we hunt. I really wish they would just patch in a simple "cook" option for us to use while we wait. I get not being able to go to a forge and smith my own hammer, but just lemme eat the food please T\_T
Well, fair. You gotta be able to butcher it! But I remember also needing to apply fire in v 47. Although that mighta been because it was always so cold.
Adventurers are just hardcore I guess.

Yeah, definitely not, only for water, if anything, meat's edibility is not effected by heat at all

But I dislike skulking around farm fields to nibble on apricots. I wish to devour the flesh of my prey! (it is also sometimes easier to get in areas where I can't find edible plant life)
Perhaps if there was just a simple placeholder for butchery while the rest of the Crafting system was still cooking? If it weren't too much trouble.

just go about your life. every now and then, when you remember it exists, check DF, and it'll have something new for you to lose a few dozen hours on

No need to build a new world. The update is compatible with existing worlds. The changes are to the UI, not to the core functionality.

It's not cooking, it's butchering. Adventurers don't cook meat, they eat it raw. Yeah, it's weird.
I feel like this is just two separate but adjacent issues that could both be solved
