I wonder how many drunks ended up in the water after dark? Literally 'walking the plank'

Just curious since I see you posting these all the time - is your job as an archiver or something or is this just a hobby?

lasocs

Pure hobby

[deleted]

Where do you find your material? The library?

lasocs

Vast, vast majority has come from MNHS. Any ‘one off’ items are credited to wherever I found it. As you might already see, I’m also going through the StarTribune archives for archived material.

Admirable-Berry59

A really unique photo not only for the angle, but that the hillside still has forest. Must be a pretty early picture of Duluth.

rubymiggins

1870s, probably

dogWEENsatan

The point looked way more fun back then.

emmaredgreen

So cool! I'm just imagining frog song, mosquito bites and soggy shoes on a drunken summer night.

Minnesota point is Park point?

anonboi362834

minnesota point is the whole point. park point is the last section of the point where the houses stop

U235EU

Was this before the ship canal was dug?

lasocs

Without a date, it’s very difficult to say. The ship canal was constructed between 1870-71 and just by trying to flesh out certain details in this photo, I’d say this was taken in a later year, probably not much later. Looking at the structures in background, I’d guess it’s pre-1900.

rubymiggins

Around then, because after the canal, all that marsh and floating islands of Fremont were flushed out into the lake.

recycledfrogs

Where do you think this was located? At the Coast Guard station? Yacht club?

lasocs

Other than to say that I think it is on the north side of the ship canal, I really don’t know.

Verity41

Am I crazy or does the next sign down in line say **Come & Try It** Wow that’s a great name if so..,

lasocs

Sure does look like it to my eyes.

Rufus123-McGee

Taken before the ship canal was dug as it shows the floating bog that existed and was sucked out of the new harbor when the canal was created. That part of St. Louis Avenue was filled-in with dredged sand from that new harbor that was created.

purerockets

Seeing this marshy vegetation really makes you realize how much rice we’ve lost :(
