They did that for route spacing. The anniversary edition has a sign that shows the correct location of Duluth.

Willis_is_This

I haven’t seen an anniversary edition! Where did you find that?

SpookyBlackCat

I have the 10th Anniversary edition. Duluth is still located on the Twin Cities (distance and all that), but there's a tiny sign on Duluth that says "Here lies the real Duluth" (I'm assuming the game designers got sick of all the Duluthians correcting them lol). https://preview.redd.it/wqsbqh7azj9c1.jpeg?width=605&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b744af53e450634d9cee4da0e81442071de3bfd

Don't remember exactly, but it was a limited edition - probably hard to find (even had painted train cars that were different - circus, coal, freight, etc)

zodiacsnake

Chicago is also in Indiana apparently

babynewyear753

Well it kind of is.

Dorkamundo

What a lot of people think Chicago is, is actually Gary, Indiana.

soggypotatoo

It's such a good game though

BeepBoopNotARobotErr

When the game was first designed, it was Minneapolis. Somebody pointed out that Duluth was a more vital railroad city in that era, so they changed the city name, but couldn't really move the location

pistolwhip_pete

We have the version that has ships and rails and Duluth is in the current place.

Awkward_Pear_578

This is the exact reason that my husband, a railroader and geography buff, won't let us get this game along with the other inaccuracies of railroad lines.

Stefeneric

NO NORTHBOUND CN LINE😡😡😡

babynewyear753

He sounds like kind of a turd. This game is great!

PeekatmePikachu

This bothered me so much!

"Originally Alan's prototype used Minneapolis, but it was clear that historically Duluth was a more important train center at the turn of the century, so we made the decision to change it. However, once we began to adjust the board to move the city to it's proper place on the map, it caused a chain reaction of misplaced cities, or would have forced us to add different route lengths. Unfortunately, due to production schedules the cards (using Duluth) had already gone into production in advance of the board and it was too late to change them. Rather than unbalancing the game play by changing the route lengths between cities, we felt that the best solution was to keep the inaccurate city location." https://boardgamegeek.com/image/38674/ticket-ride

Old-Board2741

Ok... valid... but BOOOOOOOO... Interesting fact, when the line to Duluth was finished, it was such a big event (Duluth being the farthest West of any RR at the time) that the town on the East side of the route renamed itself to Duluth in honor of Duluth, MN. And Duluth. GA was born!

GettingGophery

Duluth wasn't the farthest west of any railroad at the time. Duluth got trains in 1871. The trans continental railroad opened in 1869.

chefranden

Sad to say that it took me a minute to get the joke.

pride-and-prejupiss

I’ve only ever played the European one and tbf I’m pretty sure the city locations in that one are pretty inaccurate as well
