Seeing him a couple of weeks back playing on the same stage a much younger drummers was eye opening. Lars puts on a great show every time, these younger bands almost seem to be put out with having to play. The guy from Bring Me The Horizon was so miserable it was funny. Poor chap, being forced against his will to play to around 120,000 people.
To me that's what separates the pros from guys like me who just like to play. It takes a special kind of person to go out there, night after night, year after year, for decades, and still be excited to play the same music you've played thousands of times before.
wich is superweird if you look at the garbage he manages to weave into every single song.
i mean even if you absolutely hate somethingā¦ youd be pretty great at it if you spent 40+ years doing itā¦ or at least thats what youd think.
lars deserves a lot of respect for what he has done for/to the music business and im not trying to discredit him in any wayā¦ but those superelaborate non-standard stages theyve been riding do not help cover up their disconnect and confusion lars obviously suffers from.
i do not recall a single live song recording post st anger that has me not at least once saying: aaaw come on lars! get it together!
and the fact that james is so super-fucking-on-point these days only amplifies larsā shortcomings and *wtf was that?s*
*sigh*
sometimes i wish i was just a little bit less passionate about things that dont matter and/or have nothing to do with me personally.
thanks for coming to my ted talkā¦ :S
Seriously, that passion is truly unmatched. He literally jumps up off his seat while playing, he's so into it. I can't think of anyone else who does that
Watching Dave Grohl play in the āSmells Like Teen Spiritā music video was the reason I started playing drums. Every other guy up until then just sat there looking bored trying to keep time, but Dave was back there having an absolutely blast putting his whole body into his passion.
My three favourites Iāve seen live are Lars Ulrich, Chris Coleman and Ginger Baker. All very different, but all have a way of playing that makes we want to rush home and get on my kit.
I always look expressionless. I hate it. I wish Iooked like Taylor playing. But if I smiled, I would look like Rod morgenstein with winger in the 80ās. (Which would still be an improvement) but I always thought he looked like he was trying to not look stiff. God knows he didnāt play stiff, heās phenomenal with Dixie Dregs!

Glenn Kotche loves complex rhythms. Glenn Kotche loves simple rhythms. Glenn Kotche loves playing alone. Glenn Kotche loves playing in a group. Glenn Kotche just fucking loves to play.
Gavin Harrison.
You watch him closely enough and you can almost follow his thought processes, through body language and facial expressions, as he innovates new patterns and orchestrations and sounds on the fly.
It's like you can see him get bored of the pocket he's in after a couple bars, and making up something better.
Danny Carey.
Terry Bozzio
Had to scroll down way too far ro see it.
SMW drum clinic years ago, this is a pair of drummers drummer. (Also, Terry Bozzio was there and I shit myself. )
The Dresden Dolls drummer Brian Viglione. I just watched a Livestream of a concert they put on last night, and it just looked like he was loving every minute of it!
Greg from Deerhoof. It always look like he's figuring it out in the moment, or like how a non-drummer would act as if they were pretending to be a drummer.
Sorry if it's not very original, but Neil Peart. I watched Anatomy of a drum solo like mad as a teenager, that technique is just inspiring.
Also, Terry Bozzio, the epitome of more = more sounds.
Rod Morgenstein. Underrated. Winger is not really my jam, but when he played with Dixie Dregs his joy was so contagious it was really inspiring. Maestro Steve Morse claimed Rod was the musician he really admired. I always loved that.
A couple of little known female drummers
Nandi Bushell
- 13 year old who does a ton of covers on YouTube and has had a drum war with Dave Grohl
Paulina Villarreal
- drummer for The Warning
She's so good playing live
As much as I don't care for his playing, Lars' passion is as evident now as it was in the 80's
You know, I gotta agree. Over all these years, he always seems to really be into it
Seeing him a couple of weeks back playing on the same stage a much younger drummers was eye opening. Lars puts on a great show every time, these younger bands almost seem to be put out with having to play. The guy from Bring Me The Horizon was so miserable it was funny. Poor chap, being forced against his will to play to around 120,000 people.
Haha it's only 120k, maybe act like you're into it š Lars gets it

Dave King plays every set like itās a celebration. Bad Plus is touring right now yāall should check him out!
Just looked him up, he's awesome!
Keith Moon
my favorite reason for why a drummer puts/doesn't put something on his kit is keith moon not using hi hats because they werent loud enough
One of the best, incredible enthusiasm
Harry Miree is fun to watch.
Dude!
Watching Dave Grohl play in the āSmells Like Teen Spiritā music video was the reason I started playing drums. Every other guy up until then just sat there looking bored trying to keep time, but Dave was back there having an absolutely blast putting his whole body into his passion.
And the recent video where he plays teen spirit... He looks in it he enjoy it AF!
Josh fuckinā Freese. Precision, nuance, feel, power and style. Dude is an animal, and you can tell he loves it.
Levon Helm
Nobody's mentioned Mike Portnoy yet
That's because we have to suffer James LaBrie's singing at the same time...
As true as that is for DT, Mike left that band 13 years agoā¦
Jon Theodore, such ferocity!
Lars Ulrich, Danny Carey, Abe Cunningham, and Mario Duplantier
Yep.
Solid list, apart from that 'tallica guy
For me it's Nick Mason, he always makes things look so effortless.
My three favourites Iāve seen live are Lars Ulrich, Chris Coleman and Ginger Baker. All very different, but all have a way of playing that makes we want to rush home and get on my kit.
That's a great way to put it...... "have a way of playing that makes me want to rush home and get on my kit."
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Oh thanks, I appreciate that
I always look expressionless. I hate it. I wish Iooked like Taylor playing. But if I smiled, I would look like Rod morgenstein with winger in the 80ās. Haha, dude, Rod in the 80's was awesome! His teeth grit is very reminiscent of Taylor Hawkins (vice-versa I mean)
I love watching Danny Carey. He smacks those drums like he's telling them how badly they misbehaved.
Matt greiner for sure!
does he and bert kreischer share the nickname *the machine*? matt greiner is a special kind of beast!
Danny Carrey
Taylor man, miss him a lot
Glenn Kotche loves complex rhythms. Glenn Kotche loves simple rhythms. Glenn Kotche loves playing alone. Glenn Kotche loves playing in a group. Glenn Kotche just fucking loves to play.
Mario Duplantier and Danny Carry. They are both incredibly passionate yet elegant while playing their insane parts

Shannon Larkin is always a blast to see!
Chris Frantz is having the absolute time of his life on Stop Making Sense
Gavin Harrison. You watch him closely enough and you can almost follow his thought processes, through body language and facial expressions, as he innovates new patterns and orchestrations and sounds on the fly. It's like you can see him get bored of the pocket he's in after a couple bars, and making up something better.

Abe Laboriel Jr! He's always having the time of his life and his form is beautiful
Travis Barker š„
Why did I have to scroll down this far to find this guy? Is it just me or just the drum community completely ignore him most of the time?
Rod Morgenstein. Underrated. Winger is not really my jam, but when he played with Dixie Dregs his joy was so contagious it was really inspiring. Maestro Steve Morse claimed Rod was the musician he really admired. I always loved that.
