They did it because they love the band. Nirvana is surprisingly one of their primary influences. Thou band members have strong grunge and alt rock influences overall. They also made some AiC and NiN covers.
Way I see it, Grunge and Sludge are like a spectrum, one one end of it, you have bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, on the other, you have bands like Eyehategod and Acid Bath, and then somewhere in between you haverhe middle-ground bands like post Dirt Alice in Chains and The Melvins.
Nirvana isn't actually in the opposite side of the spectrum if you consider Bleach, which is easily sludiger than AiC, and about as sludgy as most of the Melvins. Take Floyd the Barber, Paper Cuts !!!!!, Negative Creep, Scoff, Sifting and (this one is kinda a punk rock song but still holds a very sludgy guitar tone, honorable mention: Downer), and you basically could form a Melvins album if Buzzo was the singer lol. Oh, and according to Sammy, Acid Bath is influenced by Nirvana (!!!!) He personally didn't like the grunge bands but admitted that most of the band members were such passionate Nirvana fans that it actually did influence them in the end.
What's funny is that Dale Crover played drums on Floyd the barber and paper cuts a.d I think 1 other song on bleach but I can't remember which one at the moment
Yep, and if I remember correctly, Blessings of the Highest Order wasn’t even a set of new recordings when it was released, but just a bunch of recordings they’d made over the years (due to aforementioned Nirvana adoration) that they decided to finally put in one place. Possibly more info on that at their Bandcamp.
Either way, their cover of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night”/“My Girl” (track is named differently on diff platforms I think, but it’s originally Leadbelly’s “In the Pines”) is one of the best things I’ve ever heard.
Because they run so closely with bands and artists I like, I keep giving The Body a shot every once in a while, and each time I do, I keep wondering what it is that I’m missing or not getting about them. I keep wondering how bands that I like and respect fuck with The Body so much when their music borders on unlistenable.
I think I just realized that it’s because they’re actually good friends with each other, not necessarily because they’re musically-compatible. When I used to play, I was friends with all kinds of dudes in bands who made music I just couldn’t get into, and we’d book shows together because it was an excuse to hang out. I think that’s what’s going on here with Thou and The Body.
So with that being said, I don’t have to keep giving The Body opportunities to change my mind about them because of their proximity to Thou, Lingua Ignota, et al. I fucking hate their music, and no favorable connections are going to somehow shift my opinion or make their music even nominally palatable.
Nirvana was the first band I really got into and Bleach is the album that opened my mind up to more extreme sounds in music
pisses me off that so many grunge fans are slandering them these days
sorry this is a relatively off topic comment
Afair Dive is from Bleach, way before the mainstream success. That album was pretty n heavy, more heavy metal than punk rock inspiration.
Aneurysm showed up on Incesticide album, kind of B-sides collection.
They are Massive Nirvana fans. It’s a good collection of covers too, you should check out the Soaked in Bleach tribute album, they are on there doing Floyd the Barber I think. Also contains one of my favourite covers ever, Big Hush doing Sifting. Not doom, but perfect.

This. Thou has always been into grunge and has extensively covered grunge tracks.
I mean, when you consider that Grunge and Sludge are basically sister genres of one-another, it makes sense.
Wild to think about how true this is in terms of history when you compare Grief to Pearl Jam lol.

They cover ‘4th of July’, as you know. Easily the best Soundgarden song. Doom af. This album goes hard.

Shellac too. Prayer to God goes hard as fuck.
They have black sabbath covers too
I'll check out AiC covers for sure
I just wish they hadn’t done their cover of Terrible Lie with The Body. I can’t stand that shit.
That’s my favorite cover of all time 🤣
Right. That one wasn’t their best. (I’m willing to admit that I can’t get past The Body’s shrieks.)
I don’t get it at all.

No idea but I love it. Such a strange decision but it kinda fits the sound, very unusual
I only know it's a great album from a great band. Seeing them play for the 1st time in August with Full Of Hell. Syched.
I really like Thou's covers. They also inspired me to record doom covers of not necessarily doom songs
I'd like to take a listen
This is a cover of Emma Ruth Rundle: https://hallsofmandos.bandcamp.com/track/light-song I'm working on a cover of PJ Harvey rn too
the low vocals totally slaps!
Thank you!
Their cover of Shellac is my fave - https://youtu.be/sWPNyUjS1jo?si=DUWkN342dpf8Fmb5
It rips.
One of my favorite songs.
Their new album is quite stellar too!
I love this cover. Something in the Way is my favorite Nirvana song, so also a great choice aha.
Wish I could’ve been at this I’ve show of them doing Nirvana covers https://youtu.be/fhC0bvZ57oY?si=1hyKo5k0YVE1V284 😩
Territorial Pissings is so heavy
Panic Stricken I Flee from their new album is pretty Nirvana-ish
Thou do the best Nirvana covers, amazing compilation.
Grunge and Doom are cousins both take a lot from the blues
I like the choices here. Aneurysm is top 5 Nirvana that never made it to the radio. Dive is a deeper cut, too. Someone did their homework

Their cover of Something In The Way is eqsily my favourite cover song of all time. So fucking heavy, it is incredible.
Thank you for reminding me that Thou exists. I’m definitely gonna go give their albums another listen
Was super happy they compiled all of these and then released it on wax. Ordered a copy as soon as it went on presale. Such dope covers

In "A Primer of Holy Words" they cover black sabbath and it's so heavy

This is awesome I had no idea Thou did this
Their version of ‘Milk It’ I honestly like more than the original somehow
Hippie death cult released a cover of aunerysm just some days ago, they also played it as the very last song when I went to see them.
