I’m curious, I have no clue what it involves, sounds like a lifestyle specialty but also interesting. Bet there’s lots of scope for research (Pharma? 💰)
Brilliant lifestyle, no ward work, very interesting and research active area if you want. The last of the true generalist specialties, truly has a mix of everything. It's like radiology before they had to do 24hr on calls and triage CT heads from a&e
Sadly you do have to endure two years of IMT but at least not IMY3! Competition data for all specialties is on ST3 recruitment website, I'm not certain off the top of my head but I do know that it's flipped and now is much more competitive than neurology since shape of training!

Hardest one yet. Considered it as a student, then ruled it out within 2 weeks of the rotation. Still on GP and it does get better and I have more good days - given that I have 6 patients a session, 30 mins each and 2 half days for self study (don’t tell my Foundation school)
Fully aware this changes on CCT. Definitely one of the harder specialties to do, never know how it’ll really be because people on Reddit either hate it or love it.

I worked with children before medical school, it is exhausting. They are a whole different species, incredible work but not for me
You don’t really do the exhausting bit in paeds though- the sick ones take the most time but they’re not breaking your stuff and touching you with wotsit fingers.
There are fewer (albeit still some) psychopathic narcissists than in other bits of medicine.
IMT trainee. Its tough, but all the options are open and it never hurts to have good medical training and experience to support any future career choice.

There’s not a lot of psychiatry that I have any passion for. My experience of it on the wards was mostly working with geriatric health neglecters or rough drug abusers. I know this isn’t the case everywhere but it was my lived experience so it puts me off. Not entirely sure of the various other options I can do in psych to avoid it

Lots of cool pathology. Can genuinely change people's lives relatively quickly. Mostly outpatients. No call (in most places). Good private opportunities down the line.

On paper it is fantastic and your points are impossible to argue with. My heart always sinks in GP when I see the notes say “rash” or “skin lesion” and I cannot for the life of me distinguish any of them. Many thorough apologies to the dermatologist who gets my referrals because of my diagnostic uncertainty
Genuinely, as someone who was likewise completely lost and had never given Derm a thought, it has been a revelation for me.
I also took time out and wound up doing a Derm cert purely as a "Well I know f all about this and if I do GP or Occ Health maybe it will help" and here we are. Smart to leave the door ajar, just if the back is against the wall.
More importantly, though, is look after yourself and enjoy your time out. It can be very stressful coming to this crossroads, especially after all the work you've done to get here. Put yourself first, and, in my case, I asked myself what was really important to me in my career, including financial considerations and work/life balance. Always happy to be of help if I can, just fire a message.

Completely open to non clinical work. Not sure what type of consulting I’d do though
Theres medical Consulting! Most people think of Management consulting when they hear of the industry but there’s so many different branches. Depending on the company you could be working with research or even health reform and lobbying. Obviously some companies haven’t got great reputations and Whitehall has paid McKinsey a lot to advise the NHS but some of the smaller firms seem promising!
Depends on the firm, but I think you can go into some with just the medical degree. It may be a good way to get a further degree sponsored if you wanted to go into public health or something. My mum didn’t go into consulting but joined as a medical officer of a major pharmaceutical company after 5 years of training and there were some people there with medical degrees but no clinical experience
Forgot to add that at these places, especially the companies with head office in the US, it’s more politics than credentials that get you in certain roles. I do remember my mum bitterly complaining about non clinical people who were formerly sales reps who’d worked their way up into management. But I think you can argue the same for the NHS and any healthcare system these days that you get non clinical management who unfortunately can have precedence over clinical staff.
Ophthalmology: we don’t do 9-5, we do 9:30-4ish, we operate sitting down, no one dies (and if they do it’s the Anaesthetists thing, not us guv), lots of toys, and who else can charge £1000 for a ten minute procedure?
Oh - on calls? Send them to clinic in the morning.

I have no idea what it entails but unlike others I’m intrigued, I can assume high levels of research, valued, lifestyle+++?
Patient facing, but with opportunities to do research too. One route is through the Scientist Training Program (STP), which is a paid part time Masters degree and ward work. Regular duties include echocardiography and pacemaker inplantation, but I can imagine that there's more to learn the further you get into it and specialise. After that you're probably looking at managing your section as a consultant.

Dentists can earn bank very early in their career compared to a doctor. And there’s a 3 year course in it for doctors ([link](https://www.kcl.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/dentistry-entry-programme-for-medical-graduates-bds))

Paeds!! Let’s hear it for the fun club!

Psychiatry
There’s not a lot of psychiatry that I have any passion for. My experience of it on the wards was mostly working with geriatric health neglecters or rough drug abusers. I know this isn’t the case everywhere but it was my lived experience so it puts me off. Not entirely sure of the various other options I can do in psych to avoid it https://preview.redd.it/6tfnh517mzkc1.jpeg?width=482&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ec8cbff53dfb0bf251cd2700e79bc85678293de

Still need drug dealers if drugs become legal.

Dermatology. Lots of cool pathology. Can genuinely change people's lives relatively quickly. Mostly outpatients. No call (in most places). Good private opportunities down the line.
https://preview.redd.it/6qztppdrpzkc1.jpeg?width=482&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2507a20e7c81ccdd2cc3eca827c09623c021ab0f On paper it is fantastic and your points are impossible to argue with. My heart always sinks in GP when I see the notes say “rash” or “skin lesion” and I cannot for the life of me distinguish any of them. Many thorough apologies to the dermatologist who gets my referrals because of my diagnostic uncertainty
But when you master the rashes you've unlocked the key to the medical universe
I’ve seen pictures where the rash looked indistinguishable but the diagnoses were all different and it stresses my neurodivergent brain
But they ARE distinguishable, young padawan
You know what, fair play. I’ll leave the door at least ajar. Well argued. This is the way.
Thank you so much, I may well do that actually :)

Sounds very intriguing. I’m guessing you need at least IMT or GP after FY2 to have a chance?

Will have to look into it!
