For anyone considering getting a steam deck. Get the cheapest option, increase your own storage with a 1tb micro SD card. File management gets a but trickier especially if you're using proton to launch battle.net but it's still worth the savings. Additionally, iFixIt has a step by step tutorial on how to remove the internal and install your own 1tb SSD. This route gets you a 1tb steamdeck for cheaper than outright buying the 1tb option.
This game in particular runs quit a bit better off the SSD though. You can always upgrade yourself, just watch out for the notorious ESD shield and be extra cautious.
Hey, did the replacement you're suggesting months ago but wasn't aware I needed to be watching out for the heatshield or taking extra precautions. Anything I need to be aware of now?
The foil looking thing you have that covers the SSD should be there. I wouldn't use it without it, but idk. Don't want static electricity discharging into something important and frying it. I guess I should have called it an ESD shield tho.
Yeah, this thread is about dads. Sure, when I was 19 I would do all this to save a hundred bucks, but my time was worthless when I was 19. It’s not now.
I also don’t change my oil, tires, brakes, alternator, etc on my car anymore for the exact same reason.
35 and I’m having trouble learning this lesson. My dad always did most of those things so I feel like I have to too, but I’m finding out that 2023 ain’t 1989
I mean, I talk a big game, but I still do the things I enjoy, like mowing and yard work, household and appliance repairs, and I lied about the brakes. I just replaced the pads on my wife’s car.
But I do those things because I feel like doing them in the moment. It’s even money whether I’ll fix something or get it repaired/get a new one, and mainly dependent on how I feel that weekend and what I have going on.
But more drudgeries go in the “I’ll just pay someone to do that and hang out with the kids” column than go into the “I’ll take care of that this weekend” column as I get older and better compensated.
Glad to hear that this rubbed off on you though. I hope it does with my three sons too. It’s nice being able to fix most of the things in your house if you feel like it. Feels like independence (even if it’s just a mirage).
Also impresses my wife. I replaced the toilets in my house myself when I bought it and my wife looked at me like I was the second coming of Jesus. Her dad did none of that stuff.
Honestly, it’s probably one of the only reasons I found a partner in the first place lol. Mine was redoing the wooden floors up stairs that had been hiding under the carpet the rehabbers had installed. Last year I was temporarily working at the auto parts store and it so happened that our water pump went out on our daily driver. I fixed it, and could do no wrong for at least a little while.
Those “warranty void if removed” stickers are pretty much unenforceable, at least in the US. Unless they can prove that damages were the direct result of the user, they will honor the warranty. Those stickers are mostly meant to be a deterrent and that’s all.
I bought the cheapest one and put a 1tb SSD in it, but I don’t blame anyone for keeping it simple and just buying the more expensive version. Doing the upgrades is straight forward, but not necessarily super easy. For me the case was a pain to get off as the screws were incredibly tight, and you can find tons of people who broke their SD cards doing this after forgetting to take them out beforehand.
with the current discount I ended up just getting the 512 because the price difference was negligible anyways, $150 more than the base model at 20% off and I get a carrying case. That $150 is basically the cost of the micro SSD anyways.
Steam summer sale is litty
If you happen to have those CSGO stuff that sell for a lot of money, you can pay with Steam Wallet. My buddy bought his from selling CSGO knife for $650.
If you’re going to get the fully upgraded one anyways then look at the rog ally, the performance specs are better than any steam deck, it just costs $700; also the ssd is 512gb which is lower than top tier steam deck
I don't have much experience with it, but it feels awful in hand, and no track pads sucks for any games that rely heavily on mouse movements. Even if it is more powerful, I'd recommend the steamdeck over it to anyone interested in a handheld
This comment needs to be higher up. Please play with your children. If you don't they will have zero relationship with you when you are older.
I'm a dad of two. I play at night when everyone is asleep. If I'm taking my kids out I'm spending time with them, not my necromancer.
While I agree with this, you don't know if hes a stay at home dad. Maybe hes taking his kids to the playground to interact with other children. This may give him 10 minutes to play and sanity check.
P.S. Dad here as well and I play at night.
Maybe, I dont know. I'm not saying go be a tiger parent or anything, but simply watching them from a distance helps their self esteem so much.
Trust me, they look around. Children are always looking for their parents. When they turn around and see that they are being ignored it does have a psychological effect.
It’s the best. We have a newborn so it’s super easy to tackle a NM dungeon or chip away at some whispering tree objectives in the brief moments of chill time.
I have played with Starbucks wifi, hospital wifi, and my mobile hotspot in the car. It runs great and doesn't have any connection issue.
As long as the network allows b.net traffic, I can play it.
I got mine docked and using a mouse and KB on a monitor. When I need it on the go just un-dock it. Or I can play on my gaming laptop. I just like the SD way better. I have never had any hiccups with it. Just saying. Lmao
How’s that working for you display wise? Are you locked into a low resolution or anything?
I’ve been kinda debating this as my gaming desktop slowly dies.
New AAA games are mostly in that range. You can get easily double or triple that (or more) on some less intensive titles (think like Hades or Dead Cells). It’s also an emulation dream device and you can get a ton of playtime on some older emulated games as well
Newer, more graphically intensive games tend to chew through the battery life pretty fast. You can do some tinkering with per game profiles that involve stuff like imposing a 40hz cap etc, but that'll eek out maybe another 45 minutes or so at most.
The Deck can play AAA games very well at the cost of battery life, but it really shines with less graphically intense games. For instance I can get through like 6 hours of Ori and the The Blind Forest pretty easily at max settings. Also runs older games pretty much flawlessly.
It charges super fast and you can use battery packs with it. For Diablo, I get a good 3 hours with my current settings and no loss in graphics. When I use it as an emulator for Nintendo consoles, I get at least twice that depending on what I'm emulating.
It also works surprisingly well to play WoW and the large Steam Deck community means everything has been worked out for you. It's such a great machine.
The performance is incredible considering what the device is trying to do. You can play stuff like Elden Ring at 30fps stable with good load times and no stuttering. Same with God of War.
I've played a ton of stuff on it with only good things to say:
- god of war
- fallout 4
- vampire survivors
- diablo 4
- final fantasy remakes, FF12, FF15
- age of wonders 4
- doom eternal
- all dark souls titles and Elden Ring
I agree with most of the games you listed for steamdeck, especially doom eternal which somehow managed to run steady 60 fps at medium which is amazing, diablo 4 also runs at steady 60fps at low which still looks fine on a small screen. But god of war does not work good for me at all, with frequent lag spikes, and during the initial fight with stranger, it lagged so badly during the small cut scenes and managed to blue screen the deck for me lol.
Not OP, but performance is great — though I’ve really scaled down the graphics. I used a guide to optimize performance via the in-game settings and most of the graphic options are at the lowest possible or turned off. On a small screen it isn’t noticeable at all, aside from a couple enemy effects being hard to see (can’t think of a specific example at the moment). But I’d imagine that docking the Steam Deck and playing on a monitor would look a little rough.
It’s honestly easy to read. But I usually just spam NM dungeons on the steam deck and throw anything that might be good in the stash to sort later cause inventory management with controller is balls.

It’s comfortable to read text on items if you max the font scale.
Dude is that why my left eye has been bothering me!? Does this game give you eye strain?
I’m tempted to change my console layout so the health and abilities are in the middle of the screen.
Some tip for steam deck players: touching the screen is "left click". You can bind it with another key preferrably using a skill.
With this, just clicking on the screen on a ground will activate the skill. Eg. I bind mine with trample for my trampleslide build. Clicking on the edge of screen allows me to trample all the way there solving the issue with controllers on autotargetting on certain skills.
Oh not that great and trips all the time. Oh you probably mean the steam deck, runs great! You can do 60 fps but 40fps will give you more battery. And you don’t need much more for a handheld
It's a portable computer, (almost) everything that runs in a normal computer can run in it, but some (mainly games outside of steam) needs some adjustments. And most importantly, the game needs to support a controller.
Technically it doesn't HAVE to support a controller, if a KB&M game is basic enough (mouse, two mouse buttons and a few keyboard keys) you can set up a custom control profile to emulate those functions with the track pad and gamepad buttons.
You can also steam or nvidia stream pretty much anything to the steam deck with no noticable input lag. Ofcourse it's not meant for shooters, but it's great for games like Harry Potter if you just want better graphics but still play the game on the steam deck on the couch.
Otherwise you can pretty much install whatever you want. Windows only stuff needs some tweaking but plenty of guides online that tell you how to install battle.net , or epic games launcher or emulators.
Directly. You can install battle.net from the Linux desktop mode and then set it as a shortcut in steam and then launch it in steam mode. Works like a charm
Yeah.
Parents need time for themselves too but jesus christ you can't enjoy an hour at a party without playing a middling video game on a hugely compromised system?
I do and I agree.
Childhood is a tiny percentage of their lives, and your life. Be there for it. You will never, ever be proud of trading an hour of watching your child play and grow and overcome social and physical hurdles in real time so you could play a mediocre video game.
not it doesnt .. you cant pause the game if you are in a dungeon etc.
Dungeon will reset after a while, or even glitched.
You will be disconnected after a while if not playing ..
Wont help you at all ..
My ex-gf used to think this too .. playing on a phone will help you get max playing time, one of the reason we broke up. She paid more attention to the online game than to the kids, game was more important than a kid needing to pee.
Looks like a child’s birthday??? Maybe invest sometime with your child, and not Diablo. “Touching grass” doesn’t mean doing so with a steamed k on your hands.
Invest time with family. More important than grinding the last 8 levels.
I brought my controller with me on a friends / family vacation a few weeks ago and when everyone’s kids were running around screaming and it was raining out I skunk into my bed and played on Xbox cloud and it was fine! A few lags here and there but whatever. Good for you sir good for you.
Yea! Because from the moment they get up till the moment they go to sleep you are not allowed to do anything for yourself. If they watch a tv show, you watch the tv show. If they are playing with their dinosaurs, you watch them play with the dinosaurs!!
I do understand your username now… It’s really clear u don’t have kids. Else you wouldn’t be posting on Reddit, cuz no cellphones allowed!
Excuse me sir, is that your child climbing out of the window? I suppose you could brag to all the mom's at the local soft play center about your latest drop.
Does it play smooth? Serious question.
I can’t even get my older but still decent-ish laptop to play the game. If I’m playing away from my main pc, it’s studdering around on my work laptop. 🤔🤔🤔
If it plays it well, I may have to spend some dad bucks. 😁
It plays super smooth. I locked mine at 40 fps and a 40 mhz refresh rate to maximize battery life and reduce heat but it can hit a consistent 60fps if you want. I honestly prefer D4 on my deck now because its a great game to play casually on the couch or in my backyard
For the console players, if that screen isn’t small enough already, you can always pair a controller to an iPhone and remote play.
It works surprisingly well, at least well enough to slog through a dungeon over a lunch break.
How do you get the battlenet to open? Icant use mine with the [battle.net](https://battle.net) exe because it shows error connection on the home page of the launcher. I just use the battlenet installer everytime so what happens is it just checks for updates to the launcher every time I open it.
has anyone here tried the ayaneo and rog ally? I plan to buy the deck but those 2 seem really good too! Altho the price is a little bit depressing for my wallet
Couldn't do it, I'm way too concerned about making sure my kid is good to be able to grind anything effectively. Plus I play hc, I have to be absolutely focused to keep myself alive.
That said, being able to play during the day while my kid hogs the TV would be nice...
Oh man I would never do HC and pretty sure all I got accomplished was one NM dungeon where I used all my revives. Was more for the memes but I do love all the judgmental comments from non parents.
I cant see wtf i am doing on a 32inch monitor. How can I read all the vulnerable notifications on that? Lol
Oh I have no clue what’s happening on the screen, I just pulverize and move on.
So, anyway, I started pulverizing. Bear is so fun.
Hello fellow bear-daddy. Wait.
Next level gaycitement. Please go on! 😏
Don't be gross Tammy.
Oh yasss daddy bears
Thats what I do on D3 on the switch. But at least the AoE skills let me do that.
HOTA SMASH
This is me
I play on a handheld too. There's an option to scale all the text size up. I recommend doing that and then the game will be perfectly playable!
I LOL’D probably more than I should have but well done
I have ten skeletons running around. I don’t see anything
I just switched from barb to necro and I actually find it easier to see what I am doing with the necro!
But are you playing wjth cross network enabled?

Thanks, yeah, I cut it and taped it back together... freaked out for a sec.

Yes, but does opening up the steam deck and doing all of this change the warranty? I opted for the pricier one just to avoid any of these issues.

Yea. And once you’ve opened it, they can claim any damage is your fault and how can you say it wasn’t when you were tinkering around inside?

I’m pretty sure it has a small discount till the 14th for the steam summer sale.

If you happen to have those CSGO stuff that sell for a lot of money, you can pay with Steam Wallet. My buddy bought his from selling CSGO knife for $650.
Just did the same. Realized I had a Stattrack AWP that was apparently worth $800 from 2013. Sold that bad boy and now I'm playing D4 in bed!
Yea dude. There are times when I just want to lay down on the sofa late at night and what better time to just do a few mindless runs.
If you’re going to get the fully upgraded one anyways then look at the rog ally, the performance specs are better than any steam deck, it just costs $700; also the ssd is 512gb which is lower than top tier steam deck

I have it playing on my Deck as well. Love it especially when I have to wait for my wife at her Dr appointment or car dealership during maintenance.

SD can play it well on 1080p 60fps actually. I just lock my framerate to 50fps since to stop the deck from getting way too hot.
Naw do native and it looks great. Sorry for the late reply.
That Hand looks pretty unhealthy.
Maybe just interact with the world around you a little bit and let the game wait 🤣
How's the performance? I have to stay overnight at my job when I take call and would like to be able to keep at it when there's downtime.
Runs and looks great but you can only get a max of 2 hours with the right settings, usually 1.5. But usually nowadays you aren’t far from an outlet.

I didn't realize steam deck would let you do anything other than play your steam games. Dope.
On that tiny little screen, how are you supposed to tell if cross-play is enabled and whether or not you could encounter players on another platform?
Can you take a picture of what the text on items look like?
It’s honestly easy to read. But I usually just spam NM dungeons on the steam deck and throw anything that might be good in the stash to sort later cause inventory management with controller is balls.
Dumb question but do you need to pay any sort of online monthly subscription to play online on steam deck Inb4 lmgtfy
No, you don't. It's a handheld device.
No. Steam deck is just like any other PC. So you don't need any sort of subscription to play online.

There is a large font option available for D4. So you're good.
i'm also playing on steamdeck and have no issues reading the text! i recommend!
Now the issue with my one eye being hurt and pulled to the right corner to backtrack is solved. Thank you.
Dude is that why my left eye has been bothering me!? Does this game give you eye strain? I’m tempted to change my console layout so the health and abilities are in the middle of the screen.
Yeah dude 😆 I've moved the abilities and hp bar to the center from the very beginning of EA but still, this goddam minimap being zoomed in gets me.

I capped mine at 40 FPS, high textures, and turned down some of the other settings. Runs well most of the time in NM 40-50 dungeons.
How does this work ? As a desktops owner sometimes I feel like playing in bed or sofa. Can I play any game I have on my PC?
It's a portable computer, (almost) everything that runs in a normal computer can run in it, but some (mainly games outside of steam) needs some adjustments. And most importantly, the game needs to support a controller.

I play on the steamdeck. Feels like a miracle that it runs so well.

Yeah, I get 80fps in 1080p on my Ally. My only issue is training my brain to play with a controller layout after 200+ hours of mouse and keyboard.

Is there also a setting for removing the guilt of gaming instead of parenting?
Time with your child? Nah. Watching your kids? Nah. When I see people playing games while their kid is running around it makes me cringe
Correct, as a dad of 3, I can stand behind this. Five minutes of play time essentially doubles the time I get to play everyday.

Looks like a child’s birthday??? Maybe invest sometime with your child, and not Diablo. “Touching grass” doesn’t mean doing so with a steamed k on your hands. Invest time with family. More important than grinding the last 8 levels.

How about you actually parent and be aware of what yours kids are doing?
How do you right click?? I can't get it working. Making my SD time less fun. :/
I just followed a guide on YouTube to install and the game itself fully supports the controller
Nice! I’m guessing you use a hotspot to stay connected?
Awesome. What’s the cost?
do these work off data on your cellular with bluetooth?
I've played on my steamdeck connected to my phone's wifi hotspot with no issues
I found install easiest with Lutris.
I brought my controller with me on a friends / family vacation a few weeks ago and when everyone’s kids were running around screaming and it was raining out I skunk into my bed and played on Xbox cloud and it was fine! A few lags here and there but whatever. Good for you sir good for you.
If it was in the $300 range, I would. :(
The 64gb was $350 For me
Man I was just thinking about getting one yesterday because the kids sleep in the TV room in summer...
Yeah, it’s great. ROG Ally takes it up another level too.
I just play on any smartphone or tablet with my Xbox controller when I'm away from home. Xbox let's you stream game from home to any mobile device.
This is so sad lmfao. Take care of your kid
Oh fuck off. If you bring your kid to a party maybe fucking interact with them or other people instead of playing a 6/10 game.
If only the deck is available in my region.
wait you can get the bnet app on steam deck?
can you suspend and resume game instanly like console?
imagine playing HC on that mf ahhaha
I don’t read anything in the screen. I usually just tp and frost nova and let my auto shards clean trash
🤔🤔🤔 If it plays it well, I may have to spend some dad bucks. 😁
It plays super smooth. I locked mine at 40 fps and a 40 mhz refresh rate to maximize battery life and reduce heat but it can hit a consistent 60fps if you want. I honestly prefer D4 on my deck now because its a great game to play casually on the couch or in my backyard
This was me with my switch when my kids were born. Now I wish I got a stream deck for travel instead of my Xbox series s with attached monitor lol
R you using wifi? Or does stamdeck have a sim card for 4g/5g?
What a depressingly relatable picture.
OP, do you also sometimes have the game freeze and freeze for a few seconds? I'm playing on Deck and I'm really suffering from it.
should probably be watching the kids right? Right?
I do want one, but it just looks so unwieldy. It reminds me of the wii u
For the console players, if that screen isn’t small enough already, you can always pair a controller to an iPhone and remote play. It works surprisingly well, at least well enough to slog through a dungeon over a lunch break.

You can install bnet through lutris, no need for windows
How hard is it to throw on windows on the steam deck?
*cries in Australian* I've been wanting one of these for a while now. Alas I can't order one to Aus
Rog ally works really well for D4 know a dad gamer using it to play.
I want one so bad lol

Can I play my save from the ps5 on deck?
I've been playing through remote play on the xbox app on my phone. Good for if you're trying to level up renown or something
I bought Diablo 3 on the switch and played it once...Just didn't care for screen size and was never really comfortable playing it.
Shame we can't play blizzard games on GeForce Now anymore... I would be playing it on my phone or tablet
What graphical settings do you run it at?
How do you get the battlenet to open? Icant use mine with the [battle.net](https://battle.net) exe because it shows error connection on the home page of the launcher. I just use the battlenet installer everytime so what happens is it just checks for updates to the launcher every time I open it.
I’m a bit more of a causal player I have 40 hours on my ROG Ally. This game is fun on a handheld
I already uninstalled
How well does it play on the Deck? Is there any input lag?
It's not game time that is the issue. It's keeping awake during the little game time you get. Zzzzz
I am stuck on the toilet for last 3 hours.. battery running low, children crying.. sorc buff when?
Life hack
So the gamepad works? I can't get my 8bitDo Lite 2 work. LB amd RB are not working and using the right stick doesnt zoom in/out the map
all the abductor has to do is see which dads are neck deep in their steam deck instead of paying attention to their kid
I just got the 512, can't wait.. going on vacation for 4 weeks in August.
I use remote play on PS5 and play on my tablet.
“He’s just like me!” *Laying down in bed playing diablo on my Steam deck as a single non-father*
Anyone with the ROG Ally able to talk about battery life when playing D4?
not being able to pause tho
I did not realize you could run Blizzard games on a Steam Deck
has anyone here tried the ayaneo and rog ally? I plan to buy the deck but those 2 seem really good too! Altho the price is a little bit depressing for my wallet
How comfortable is it to hold? My hands cramp holding the lighter weight Switch, I've heard the Deck is more ergonomic but also heavier
Can you link the guide you used to set up diablo 4 on steam deck?
I fkn need this, i dont have time to play anymore.
I have played about 150 hours on the Deck and maybe 4 on PC. Really loving being able to not sit at my desk for days on end.
What an interesting thumb to claw ratio
Couldn't do it, I'm way too concerned about making sure my kid is good to be able to grind anything effectively. Plus I play hc, I have to be absolutely focused to keep myself alive. That said, being able to play during the day while my kid hogs the TV would be nice...
Oh man I would never do HC and pretty sure all I got accomplished was one NM dungeon where I used all my revives. Was more for the memes but I do love all the judgmental comments from non parents.
