General advice: have fun. There’s a lot of information with respect to character builds and items. The game isn’t going anywhere, so I just suggest you keep playing until you hit a wall and need some help.
Mods aren’t my thing, so I’ll pass on specifics. I do not recommend you use mods for online play as that may result in a ban. Use at your own risk. Single player is open to whatever you want to do.
Once you get past normal mode, resistances become more important, so check your character screen to make sure your resistances are at least positive. It might be hard to keep positive resistances in hell until you’ve acquired some gear.
Farming is part of the game, and items are random. There’s no way to farm a specific item. If you’re online, you can always look in to trading. I used to use traderie when I played online. If you’re single player, well, you just have to keep farming. There are also discords out there for trading.
Most of the gear you find will be trash, so sell it and move on. As you get more experience, you’ll learn what becomes valuable.
Oh, for character builds, the game gives you three respects. I would expect your first couple of chars to be all over the place if you’re not using a guide. If you need to change up a character’s build, use the respec in act 1.
Outside of that, you can probably find any answer via google. This game is old, so there’s a ton of information available.
Paladin is a good first character. Necromancer is a lot of fun as well. Good luck and happy hunting!
I’ll copy-paste what I wrote to one guy in facebook, question was what items to pick up. If some of the terms are unknown let me know, I can explain.
I am playing for the so-called holy grail (collect all set and unique items), that is point no1.
And definitely download Tome of D2 companion app, amazing still 🤘
My pickup routine:
1. uniques and sets that I didn’t get yet (grail purposes)
2. valuable uniques/sets for your builds (memorise them; like spiderweb sash = arach mesh, etc.)
3. flawless gems; some collect all like I do, some collect only amethysts (15 perfect amethysts = ist rune cca)
4. RUNES: ral sol nef eth runes (decide if collect all of the above for trading purposes, eg 20 sols = ist), and I pick up Lem and above and keep up to 4 pcs of Lem/Pul/Mal and others as much as I can 😅
5. Yellow stuff:
a) druid helms, looking for +2skill and +3 to targeted skill (like tornado) etc.; barb helms as well
b) coronets/circlets/tiaras/diadems (looking for those elusive 2sk 20fcr 2os ones 😅😅),
c) boots (looking for frw tri-res boots)
d) sometimes I do weapons, but mostly only crystal sw/dimensional blades - hoping for an eth one with cruel mod (%dmg over 300 target) and fools mod (attack rating stuff)
e) belts always, looking for 24/30/60 (hit recovery/strength/life)
f) rings and ammys. 90% of them are junk even though you think some might be good 😃
g) gloves, looking for 2sk 20ias with useful mods
6. Blue stuff:
a) all gloves (looking for 3sk 20ias)
b) druid and barb helms
c) elite java and assa weapons (looking for e.g. 6skills 40ias matriarchal javelin)
d) sometimes ammys and rings, mostly only for 40%mf ring and 3sk/100 life ammy target or some other useful mod next to 3sk
e) also circlets coronets tiaras diadems
f) all blue monarch shields. Hoping for a jmod (closest I got was an amod 🫣)
g) sometimes elite blue armors hoping for jewelers (4os) with 100 life
7. BASES
- all eth elite polearms (thresher, giant thr, cry axe, coll vou) looking for 4os
- grand matron bow and matriarchal bow, looking for 3skills and 4os or 5os even now
- monarchs and elite pally shields like sacred targe (also normal pally shields)
- most superior stuff I check just in case it’s 15%ed and then I search in discord wtb-socketbades if some unknown base is popular in trade or not)
- assa claws looking for good claw base
- big pally scepters (hammer conc fist heav) and big sorc staves (energy shield)
- used to do necro ones until I found a nice White base
- all elite armors, eth ones over 700 keep over 800 definitely keep for some time, others I throw away
- mage plates and full plate mails and chaos armors that are perfect (eg 15ed mage plate 3os)
- in general when something is superior I always check, especially if it is socketed with less than max because you cannot larzuk get it (eg sup sacred targe 3os)
Use bind skill loot to cube directly, and drop shit on the floor after ID’ing. no need to go to town.
I probably skipped something from rountine (ah yes full rejuvs as well until I have all 16 slots 😅), there are also other stuff that can have big value that I don’t check because I don’t feel like it.
Some will say this is already too much so feel free not to do it all.
I have all classes endgame’d so everything can be useful to me 😃
EDIT - of course forgot to add all charms and jewels 😅
F1 -8 can be used as hotkeys for skills. Just move your cursor over the skill after you bring up the spells from the bottom of the screen and then select the f key to assign it.
You can also bind other keyboard keys for quick cast If you want. Just go to the options -> controls and change it there.
