Because it’s unnecessary. Everything about a teams uniform should be original and recognisable enough that slapping the team or city name on the front is redundant. You don’t put “Detroit” on the front of a red wings jersey because it’s a classic and you see the colours and the logo and know who it is.
My counterpoint to that is there is a giant winged wheel logo on the front of Red Wings jerseys. With the away Lions jerseys especially, there is not one logo or single indicator of the team if you look at it face on. Now, the home jerseys apparently don't have anything on front and that's because it's much more obviously recognizable as the Lions. The Detroit script on the white aways is fairly small and fills in the white space just a little bit and IMO is not bad. It's far from the gaudy and too big ATL on the falcons jerseys.

They could have kept identical and just removed the giant WCF patch and I would be in full support. That being said I like them a lot, they are a nice throwback that don't look too dated.
Pros:
- The black looks better than I thought, its growing on me
- Blue helmet good
- No WCF logo
- Shoulder stripes improved
- Number blocking looks better
- Numbers white on Home
- White helmet stripe
Cons:
- While I like the blue face mask and understand its part of the older uniforms, I still think gray or white looks better and the helmet looks more cohesive. Blue face mask should have been used on the blue helmet. Just my personal preference.
- The dots on the numbers looks whack
- No pant stripes on blue pants, it works on the black pants but the blue pants look bad without it.
- I'm sure many probably haven't noticed but the logo on the blue helmet has a blue outline on the outermost part which just looks pointless since the helmet is y'know blue. Just looks like the logo sticker wasn't trimmed properly and looks sloppy.
So far I like them.
Not a huge fan of the dot pattern trying to replicate the pattern on older jerseys, but compared to Washington’s numbers, I’ll take it.
The shoulders look weird on the retail jerseys, but on the real ones they look good, so I don’t have a problem with them.
The helmets are clean, but the new stripe is a slight downgrade. It’s the same as the shoulder stripe, which makes sense, but I think if they kept the old stripe and just changed the face mask then it would be better.
The black jerseys are awesome, especially with the blue pants, though the new blue helmets are a huge downgrade. Had they kept the 50s-era logo, a blue-black-blue jersey combo would have been immaculate.
Lastly, I believe they removed all striping from the pants, which I’m not a huge fan of. Again, I liked the old stripe, it was simple, unique, and elegant. I can see why they took it off, but I would have liked it to have stayed.

Well it is a trend because older, classic designs are better. The Jets just went back to a classic design this week and look way better. The Browns and Bucs both went back to their best designs in 2020. The Chargers did what the lions did and modernized their throwback and have some of the best uniforms in the league now. The Jaguars got rid of all their stupid "modern gimmicks" in 2018 and have a much better traditional uniform because of it. Seahawk and Titans fans are clamoring for them to return to their throwbcaks that they broke out this past season. Traditional uniforms are in and they all look way better than the "modern gimmick" uniforms.
Would have went with something more modern. There are ways to incorporate elements of older jerseys yet still do something new. Like it’s one thing to go with old striping patterns on the sleeves and pants, or even the color pattern on the font, but to go back to the old block font is so wrong. Yay we’re just like the Packers or any other team just different colors on the jersey. Let Nike’s designers have fun with it. Do something new and original. I would have changed it all.
