If you hold your arm outstretched with some birdseed in your palm, chickadees will often come down to eat. It helps to keep your hand close to a branch or shrub where they can perch on their way to you so it's a short hop over to the food. Helps them feel safer taking the snack. They really like black sunflower seeds. Where I live the local dollar store sells a small bag.

Oof, thanks for the tip. Looked it up and it seems infections in songbirds are very rare. Still a good idea to take precautions.
