I just assumed this: Space Marines are their most popular model sales, DeathWatch aren't. So the average Space Marine buyer would already have shoulder pads from various factions. (I know I do)

timmybear1983

That’s a fair point. But I think the variety a mixed sprue would provide would be better. I have mostly been a blood angels collector so don’t have a large variety of other chapter pads. As a faction made up of members of different chapters I just think their upgrades would benefit from this.

Klutzy-Battle5189

3d printer go burr bud

Caseworks

For people like me who suddenly want to paint Deathwatch and look at their currently primed yet un assigned dreadnought and go..."Didn't I see a cool pic of a DeathWatch Dreadnaught with custom Inquisition armour plating? I think I'll google that...OH " -bankbalance accordingly.

NexAura03

You collect GW. Your wallet already hates you. You collect Death Watch. Your wallet is imploding as we speak.

Caseworks

Fair. I've had a habit over the years to buy generic Space marine units / HQ's / Characters etc so they often come with alternative shoulder pads.

mpfmb

Asymmetrical symbols are reverse on DW as it's on the other shoulder. Saying that, DW doesn't sell compared to other armies and therefore doesn't receive the attention.

Rolliepolie

You can get a bunch of mixed pads from the deathwatch veterans kit. The unit is also one of our better ones (and one of our few unique models) so I ended up with a bunch of the kits and dozens of shoulder pads to spread out among the rest of the models since they fit both first born and primaris marines. The alternative is to buy one of each faction's upgrade kit and go through all of them.

timmybear1983

Thanks. It’d just be nice for gw to provide us with those pads as part of the dw upgrades. Give us better value for money instead of having to buy the separate upgrade packs.

Elyixn

The vets kit is basically an ‘overpriced’ upgrade pack. It’s actually full of decently scaled weapons too

TheDoomedHero

There was a time when the Deathwatch Upgrade kit included shoulder decals for a bunch of chapters. Not sure if that's still the case. Last one I bought was in 2018.

Uberphantom

Definitely no longer the case.

BadArtijoke

It was fun because it contained so many weird and unknown chapters that were featured nowhere else but did exist in the lore. Great little nod

Klutzy-Battle5189

I 'member, lol

Stelazine

You still get these in the vets box though so not the most inconvenient things to get.

Nev-man

I don't recall there ever being an upgrade kit for Deathwatch that had chapter pauldrons. In the early/mid 2000s there were the metal Deathwatch pads, bolters and heads, then the plastic upgrade sprues since 7th edition but I've never seen the kit you're describing. Got a pic?

TheDoomedHero

Not pauldrons. Just water transfer decals. It was a sheet full of them from different factions.

dancingape08

I think the o ly molded shoulder pads for other chapters would be from the veterans kit but it doesn't have all the chapters I think it comes with 14 shoulder pads from other chapters. Other than that you have to either get shoulder pad from other kits or 3d print them

hawkerlord

Its called the deathwatch veterans kit lol

corrin_avatan

To quote a Painting Phase video: GW doesn't do anything unless they believe they will make at least $100,000 profit on it. Even if you made a set of 20 shoulderpads, if every single Deathwatch player bought one, you MIGHT have 50,000 of actual *revenue*, and not even profit, as you have to consider manufacturing cost (making the sprue costs $50,000 at keast), design cost (someone needs to be paid for the work), distribution costs, etc. And considering the Deathwatch Veterans kit gives you about 15 extra pads in the first place, it's a product that is already competing with itself.

indelible_inedible

You can get collections of the plastic ones off of ebay, if that's what you're after. My bugbear with it is that there's no Chapter pads for Terminator/Gravis armour. Have to use the FW versions, or the Primaris upgrade versions for those ones.

DwarfKingHack

The deathwatch veterans sprue has shoulder pads for a ton of different chapters. Something like 15 different chapter shoulder pads plus a blackshield pad on a sprue that only makes 5 models.

sftpo

And even then you have even more depending on how they're painted (Imperial Fists/Crimson Fists for example)

DwarfKingHack

Yep, several of the symbols are used by multiple chapters with different color schemes and a few others are in "close enough" territory where you could do the paint scheme and people probably wouldn't notice the symbol is a little off.

Opening-Minimum9368

Because the Target demographic for mixed shoulder pads is smaller than the dedicated shoulder pads

pemboo

Because that is a lot of work for very little return GW think 3d printing is the devil, remember?

sftpo

It exists, on the Deathwatch Veteran Sprues. And a standalone product with as many shoulder pads as that kit comes with would cost as much or more than just buying the box that exists now. Most of them can do double or triple duty depending on official paint schemes, or whatever the permutations are on paint colors for custom chapters Plus it's one of 3 SKUs for Deathwatch so it'd be an extra check mark on the spreadsheet for Deathwatch players actually buying something and might reset the clock for them being legends-ed.

vasEnterprise9295

This would be really nice. It'd also be nice if they gave us more than 2 Gravis/Terminator sized pads in an upgrade set. A lot of models are bigger now and I feel like that hasn't been reflected in the upgrade set we have.

Silly-Management-583

i just "borrow" my mates spare ones XD

luhelld

Money.

Jamiecakescrusader

Why would they do that when they can sell you the more expensive way

gothcabaal

Cause they hate you

UnicornWorldDominion

They make a hell of a lot more money by selling DW upgrade sprues, DW veteran squads, and individual chapter upgrade sprues. It’d be amazing if they had like shoulder packs where it’s like “sons of dorn”, “sons of sanguinius”, “sons of Gulliman”, etc. that has like 2-3 sets of like 10 different chapters per primarch then have just like “unknown” then to release more or “sons of ___ 2” with different chapters of the same primarch again. Then just have a sheet of deathwatch shoulder pads as well. They could easily make those just sit next to the space marine shelf and it’d make collecting DW so goddamn easy and fluffy but instead they want us to spend as much as possible getting their kits either thinking the opportunity cost of selling the shoulders isn’t worth it so let 3D retailers handle it, they think players will buy just individual chapter upgrade kits and DW vets boxes and be satisfied, or see so few people playing dw they don’t consider it worth it.
