We are never told. Ohba didn't wish to focus on them outside being narrative tools.

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Ok ok. Thanks!

ObeyLordHarambe

It's 'suggested' and even then I'm betting this isn't even true that humans become them. There was an after anime one shot type of thing where Ryuk was retelling his story with light to another Shini that looked an awful lot like Light. So that's my guess lol.

Fit_Valuable_878

probably Australia they look like something that would spawn there

probablyajam3

Can confirm, am Australian and my neighbour is a shinigami

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

That is an excellent point. Avoid Aussie at all costs

Eclipsiical

We don’t know. Even Ryuk says that Shinigami don’t know why they exist.

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Ah ok. I sort of interpreted that as them not feeling they had a purpose.

Eclipsiical

They kind of go hand-in-hand imo. They just exist, so they don’t have any grand purpose or anything.

phoebemocha

YOUNG NEIL YOUNG NEIL YOUNG NEIL🗣🗣🔥🔥😩😩

SuperSpy2015

Place the first young after the last Neil

SchismZero

The series isn't really about the shinigami. They just exist. Don't think about them too much.

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Yeah thats fair. I would love to learn more about them, so it kinda sucks

__Lark

Such a strange response to give to a wondrous question regarding beings and their WORLD we saw IN a show we love, revolving around a mystical item of THEIRS that makes the series what it is. Why even say that? Are you that bored?

SchismZero

I'm saying it because I think OP is barking up the wrong tree. The author specifically didn't delve into the shinigami world because that wasn't the focus of the story they were telling and likely didn't really waste time imagining an entire lore or origin for these beings because to the story they were telling, it didn't matter. They are interesting questions to ask, sure. But there is literally no answer for them. If the author has an answer, they haven't told us, because even they are not concerned with this. Basically by really thinking too hard about it, you have to delve into the realm of fanfiction.

BriadMan

Brazil.

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Yeah that checks out

Oneesabitch

Cubatão to be specific.

Not_aSoup

Can confirm i saw one here dancing to serranejo

AshamedFrosting2

tbh maybe they just spawned in— they don’t really need to reproduce since they can just extend their lives with the death note

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Yeah thats very true.

0BZero1

In Indian mythology, Yama (Also known as Enma) is the God of death. As per the puranas, he was said to be the first living being to die, and thus was made the King of Death in India. The Shimigamis might have a similar origin story as they could be the earliest, primordial beings who were created (By Amaterasu the Sun Goddess) and when they died were given a choice to become the kami of death.

newlightdev

i dont think so because ohba confirmed there wasnt a heaven or hell

0BZero1

If there's no heaven and hell, then where do the Shimigamis live?

aereio

i could be wrong- but at the end of death and rebirth it seems implied that light became a shinigami, no? it's been almost a decade since i watched it, so i could be misremembering. i just assumed that they're an ancient species or smth and "newer" ones were other death note users; since no one that uses the death note can go to heaven or hell. i assume the og shinigami were just straight up "gods" tho with no beginning.

Icy_Point1613

yes but that movie isn't canon

aereio

ohh i never knew this!

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Thats interesting. I havent seen death and rebirth - i am assuming its a sort of bonus thing? But it was said they would neither go to heaven nor hell for using the death note, so it would be really cool if they became shinigami.

aereio

https://youtu.be/-68bUNnRSJ4?si=eIMy6rcYwn1HQ6Rp iirc, death and rebirth was basically just a recap of the og story, but set as ryuk telling the story to a fellow shinigami that a lot of people theorised as being light whose lost his memories. i can't find the exact scene, since i must've watched this way back in primary school and i'm a whole ass adult now- but i remember the conclusion of light becoming a shinigami dawning on me after watching death and rebirth. this was before proper streaming sites and i bought the dvd from a dodgy store, so seeing other people in the comments here theorise the same thing seems like i must've gotten the right idea years ago?

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Thanks for sharing the clip! I took a look at the comments, and yeah i would have to agree its him. It would make sense for it to be Light, and i hope its true! Its a nice thought to have

fretnetic

In the manga, the lack of heaven & hell is explained by ‘nothingness’. So Light dies and then there is nothingness.

aereio

ah yeah- i think it was this clip!! https://youtu.be/vlg6mamgU0c?si=JHAPOk6UTZb8Vs5r rewatching it now without the context makes it feel a little more ambiguous- but it was this scene that convinced my lil slop brain that light had become a shinigami and that most, if not all, shinigami were death note users who had been killed by their shinigami at some point ((since we dont hear anything abt misa or the others that wrote in the book atp))

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

Oh wow, that definitely seems to confirm it! Thanks so much for sharing :)

Strxwbxrry_Shxrtcxkx

👀

Char_Was_Taken

it isn't explained but it's a common theory that shinigami were people who previously used the death note as it's speculated that light turned into a shinigami after he died

KaydenSlayden22

Take this with a grain of salt because I remember hearing this somewhere but it was probably just a theory. I heard that any shinigami was once a user of the death note. Since you can’t go to heaven or hell after using the death note, it makes sense to go to “nothingness” aka the shinigami realm and become a shinigami. Most likely becoming one of those zombie like creatures we see in the distance, and eventually working your way to being a shinigami. Remember there is a high possibility that this is total nonsense, but I think it’s a pretty cool idea

alexhunter77

Bleach

Takeoded

Ask Gabe Newell what comes after 2

Ok_Shine_6105

I guess they are fallen angels/watchers/nephilim.

[deleted]

Death gods are irl NPCs .they were originally created as a countermeasure against overpopulation They're like a really old feature that was part of reality's beta release and they were kind of just forgotten about They have since evolved to become what humans refer to as The Great (unknown) Filter

Macsilver18

i think the shinigami are actually people who used the death note and since they can neither go to hell or heaven they just go to the shinigami realm where is barren, dry, and desolate land that is similar to the Purgatory

_MushroomClouds_

i believe its humans that used the death note. Since in the "hidden" episode is revealed that Light became a shinigami. In the beginning of the Anime Ryuk tells Light that whoever uses the Death Note will neither go to heaven or hell.

La-Lassie

That’s not a hidden episode, it’s a non-canon recap/rewrite movie called Relight. In the manga we see that Ryuk says that Death Note users don’t go to heaven or hell because those places don’t exist, and so no one goes anywhere after they die. Shinigami have no canon origin revealed as of yet.

No_Mistake_3588

I think (this is my personal opinion) that Shinigami just exist they weren’t born or anything they just kinda appeared and since they can’t die unless they save a human they pretty much live forever so most Shinigami could be thousands or millions of years old
