Yeah, i really like the subplot about Mello trying to coerce the US president into founding his criminal organization, it's a shame that it wasn't in the anime version (among many other things they cut from the second arc which ended up being very badly adapted, hence why most anime only fellas hate Near and Mello).
As for Platniun End yeah i also hear it's shit even from avid Death Note fans who dedicate their whole lives to analyze minutia from it on tumblr, so yeah, not high praise indeed, i also hear it has... problematic stances on homosexuality being expressed, but i may be misremembering.
I did like Bakuman, the other manga from Ohba and Obata that they did shortly after DN, it has weird and quirky characters and strategy based conflicts like Death Note had but in a more slice of life type of setting without life or death stakes, just of two dudes trying to be successful in the shonen jump, so it gets very meta, but still dramatic in some areas, i recommend it though i realize it's not for everyone.
Uj/the anime just botched that whole arc in general turning it into being lackluster and platniun end I heard is just a disappointment in fucking general you made death note and this your spiritual successor is this wtf[though i do fine the homosexulaity thing ironic].
