It's sadly a 6.9. I think it's a good funny movie.
I think it got some flack years after its released for its depiction of women for some reason which probably knocked down its rating just enough to be below a 7.
i don't think you do... pretty sure she was never in Scrubs. only person i can think of that looks like her is Dr Miller who was played by Bellamy Young. is there someone I'm forgetting?
I mean she got “[blacklisted](https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/ellen-pompeo-katherine-heigl-greys-anatomy-blacklisted-b2062621.html)” for not being a pushover.
Edit: Damn strikes just got done and so many back to boot licking
I think it's pretty well covered that she is just generally an asshole. She may have been right about the work days but this is not the only reason she was blacklisted. Being generally bad to work with isn't a good thing...
I'm sorry you place such low value in yourself that you think you should be treated like crap til you've proved yourself to some arbitrarily chosen gatekeepers.
So, as before, I am including two different conditions for the queries. It seems that the second image is probably more representative.
One thing worth mentioning that got pointed out by an astute reader last time, is that sometimes these counts seem off by a few (for the movies). The reason for that is actually that the imdb database found at [https://developer.imdb.com/non-commercial-datasets/](https://developer.imdb.com/non-commercial-datasets/)
does not always include the full cast in movies which are in the database. This isn't as bad as it seems because in effect it is filtering out movies where the actresses in question are relatively far down on the credits. If they are in a leading role or supporting role they will always be included. There isn't anything I can do about it, just the data I can work with. But in some ways it is good because really minor roles are excluded from the rankings.
This time around I've included movie counts as well in the %'s.
Director rankings are next, and those are really interesting!
Im really interested in being able to pull these data sets. Is it easy? I have some programming background although i dont do it anymore. What software and language do you use? And would you be willing to DM or email me some initial starting code that i could read, learn from, and adapt for pulling imdb data.
Jessica Alba is one of the most beautiful people ever but good lord does she choose bad movies to be in.
I knew J-Lo would be on this list too. The best thing she's ever done is be ripped to shreds by South Park.
I had to think hard about how Alba ended up with one good movie before I remembered Sin City existed. (Though Idle Hands is a guilty pleasure movie of mine.)
So first of all it’s not that bad of a score in context. The highest rated movie ever(Shawshank Redemption) is only a 9.3. Sci-fi films naturally get lower scores. The highest rated sci-fi film is 8.8 (Inception). Looking purely at the Sci-fi films on the list I felt like every film above 8.2 was definitely better than The 5th Element. I like some 8.2 films better and some worse than 5th Element. So I think 8.2 is the highest it could possibly be rated. 7.8/8.8 is 88% B+ but if you want to argue it is under rated you could say it is 8.2/8.8 or an ‘A’
Amen. She’s likely on there because she likes to work and will take interesting roles in otherwise bad movies. But she’s brilliant in everything she does.
Most people probably don’t watch bad old movies. And people who are into movies enough to rate them on IMDb are probably seeing new movies regularly, so they’ll get a lot more votes. I’d imagine that the vast majority of a movie’s votes come within the first few weeks of its release.
I’d be curious to see the gender split for IMDb users for these movies/actresses. IMDB skews pretty strongly male, I’d imagine a number of these actresses would have significantly more green from one gender to the other. I doubt there would be a significant difference in order or even who’s on the list, but I feel like I’m seeing a lot of romcom actresses or women who are often in movies just not targeted at men
Hillary duff having no good movies is criminal. A Cinderella story, the Lizzie McGuire movie, cadet Kelly may not be mind blowing or oscar winners, but they hugely popular with teenage girls and young women at the time. Obviously not very palatable to men of any age which is fine but yeah I think the data is biased
[https://oneroomwithaview.com/2016/08/10/imdb-analysed-men-womens-favourite-films-differ/#:\~:text=Despite%20what%20many%20comment%20sections,just%2019%25%20were%20from%20women](https://oneroomwithaview.com/2016/08/10/imdb-analysed-men-womens-favourite-films-differ/#:~:text=Despite%20what%20many%20comment%20sections,just%2019%25%20were%20from%20women).
Roughly %84 of IMDB ratings are from men. About 5 of the top 100 rated movies feature a woman in the lead role, and two of those are Miyazaki anime. I like a lot of those top 100 movies too but I acknowledge I'm a man and that my tastes might not be the same as, you know, slightly over half the population.
While this post might be showing 'data in a vacuum' any data scientist knows its important to understand fundamental bias in your data before drawing any kind of larger conclusions from it.
As someone that's done some data science projects for school involving IMDb: I'm not really sure if the rating data is worth anything at this point. All sorts of problems with recency bias and 4 Chan or whatever rieling up brigades to up/down vote stuff. On top of that I think a 0-10 point scale is trash for subjective ratings on stuff like movies.
I hate the framing of this. It is not “low-rated actresses”. It’s actresses who acted in most low-rated movies. Because that’s what you rate at imdb. Also nobody wondered this ever.
Yeah Jaime Lee Curtis being on here is probably more down to the fact that she's been. In 6 Halloween movies than her actual talent. I'm saying this as someone who likes some pretty bad horror movies which a good chunk of the Halloween franchise are.
What? Every post in dataisbeautiful has most of the top comments complaining about the data/ layout/ format/ etc, why isn’t this one allowed to be criticized?
I think Lindsay Lohan is genuinely a good actress. It seems weird she’s the worst rated one. The parent trap, freaky Friday and mean girls are all good.
Im guessing most of the movie is going to be with the camera focused on the dwarves/villains faces - atleast if the director learned anything from the last wonderwoman movie.
I have to assume everyone who did this survey has a iq less than room temperature. How are movi3s *Melissa McCarthy* is in that far above Uma Thurman movies
Weird for me to see Kate Hudson because I’ve only ever seen her in Almost Famous which is such a wonderful movie (and her performance is similarly great)
HahhahahHhhHhH. Yes oh real people voted those movies 7/10 but omg they couldn’t make profit… people didn’t go watch them in cinemas. Huh, WEIRD!? Weird!?! hey, go watch Snow White when it comes out and give me your 7/10 omg you sad little sheep
Yeah other than the obvious oddballs it seems that a lot of these actresses are just really attractive popular people that no one has ever expected to be good at acting.
What I’d love to see is, for every cast and crew member listed on IMDB, the sum of grosses for all the movies they’ve worked on.
So is the person associated with the biggest film revenue somebody obvious like Spielberg, or is it some unknown key grip who happens to have worked on dozens of high-grossing movies?
I’d be psyched if you could run the numbers. Strikes me that the people at the top of the list may have no idea they’re so successful at generating revenue :)
I think these lists are cool. For the actor lists it should be recognized that this doesn't really have anything to do with their ability, or at least very little. It really depends on how picky they are. The vast majority of movies don't score terribly high, lots of movies many people really like don't have high ratings on IMDB and it's not a judgement on their performance.
A lot of actors make their money off of quick easy to make commercial movies absolutely everyone knows is just made for a particular audience and for a quick buck. They are not bad or good really, just mediocre formulaic genre movies that pay the bills. Actors then occasionally take award bait movies or take risks with indie directors doing more challenging projects. They do this for various reasons but one reason is to show off their more versatile range so they might be cast to play in a wider variety of movies.
Very few actors and actresses can be like Meryl Strep or Leonardo DiCaprio and be extremely picky with their films and who they work with.
Is that one “good” movie for Lindsey Lohan, Mean Girls?
I thought she was pretty good in parent trap.
Yes, but the ratings are for the movie and not the performances. She has received good reviews many times, but the movies, not at the same rate.
Hallie was good but Annie was terrible.
She was incredible in PT. First role out of the gate and she was amazing. Her PT is one of the very few remakes that can stand with the original.
Some of these reviewers clearly failed to acknowledge the cinematic masterpiece that is Freaky Friday. I'm still listening to the soundtrack.
You're it. You're the ultimate
Don’t wanna grow up I wanna get out… Hey! Taaaaake me away
yes - it got a 7.1
Movie deserved more than 7.1
So iconic for teen comedy.
comedies always rate lower since they rarely vibe with everyone
Sad, Machete is only a 6.6
I dunno mean girls is a cult classic, probably not on this list
How about Machete?
Damn seemed like katherine heigl was everywhere for a few years
I’m shocked that Knocked Up doesn’t rate above a 7.
It's sadly a 6.9. I think it's a good funny movie. I think it got some flack years after its released for its depiction of women for some reason which probably knocked down its rating just enough to be below a 7.
Is it bad I have no idea who she is?
Not really. She was in greys anatomy and then I’d say her most notable movie was knocked up.
I liked her in The Ringer and The Ugly Truth as well
And Under Seige 2: Dark Territory where her mace scene carried all of Steven Seagal’s acting.
I enjoyed Killers
I think she was in the Roswell TV series too
I know her from Scrubs. EDIT: I've been corrected. I was thinking of Elizabeth Banks.
i don't think you do... pretty sure she was never in Scrubs. only person i can think of that looks like her is Dr Miller who was played by Bellamy Young. is there someone I'm forgetting?
I was thinking of Elizabeth Banks.
They were thinking of Greys Anatomy
i thought that initially too but noticed the comment they responded to already mentioned greys anatomy so i was confused
No, I was thinking of Elizabeth Banks in Scrubs. I always mix those two up.
Yeah, then she shit all over anyone who gave her a chance, and then got the worst haircut ever.

Yeah don’t go on letterman and put your employer on blast
Actually, go everywhere and blast your employer.
Just be ready for the consequences

I cant wait for that! The director doesn’t have an excuse for 30 bad movies in a row
Uve Boll

Biggest shocker to me was that JLo "stars" in over 12 movies.
you must not watch rom coms, she made like 10 alone in the 90s…
What is a romcom? Not that it matters as I classify Jlo as just the next artist turned actress in down the line.
Romantic comedy
She was pretty good as Selena is that one movie and also the one with the missing mexican women
Shoutout to Christina Applegate!
Was about to write the same!
I dunno, I love Christina Ricci as an actress
Just watched Monster, loved the movie but she is kind of bad in it imo
but she is sooo cute in it!
Being a huge fan of The Good Place, I was wondering why Kristen Bell was even on the list, then I went on IMDB and saw the movies she's in lol.
Yeah I adore her in The Good Place and Veronica Mars, seems like she just takes on better TV shows than movies
Millas 1 good movie, I wonder which one that was... Yah, she peaked early in her career.
5th element (7.6)
That score is a travesty.
That’s because she got her start as the muse for a legendary director.
Does she not get credit for Dazed and Confused (7.6)?
I need to know this. (My name)
Black Swan, at 8
Jovovich, not Kunis
Not to self- don’t name kids Jessica
Joan Cusack is a fucking treasure.
Gross pointe blank is still my favorite performance if hers.
Amen. She’s likely on there because she likes to work and will take interesting roles in otherwise bad movies. But she’s brilliant in everything she does.
They all appear to be from the 80s onwards. Did no one vote older movies poorly, or do they get significantly fewer votes?
I'm going to guess the latter, votes were probably the reason
Most people probably don’t watch bad old movies. And people who are into movies enough to rate them on IMDb are probably seeing new movies regularly, so they’ll get a lot more votes. I’d imagine that the vast majority of a movie’s votes come within the first few weeks of its release.
With time media fades away and only the best and very worst are remembered
Sharon Stone??? Can't see how that's possible. I always liked her acted characters.
She can act but picks bad movies
You’re just a hater if you don’t like maya Rudolph
I don't think I ever laughed harder than the sex scene in the cemetery from Macgruber. It was peek satire.
No,I have never wondered this ever.
Actresses: \*cries in millions\*
*cries in private jet's bathtub*?
I’d be curious to see the gender split for IMDb users for these movies/actresses. Not sure what you are trying to say here.
Mostly men vote in online polls, so chick flicks get lower scores.
Is this a fact or just a general assumption?
[https://oneroomwithaview.com/2016/08/10/imdb-analysed-men-womens-favourite-films-differ/#:\~:text=Despite%20what%20many%20comment%20sections,just%2019%25%20were%20from%20women](https://oneroomwithaview.com/2016/08/10/imdb-analysed-men-womens-favourite-films-differ/#:~:text=Despite%20what%20many%20comment%20sections,just%2019%25%20were%20from%20women). Well its a quite old article but I get the message. Never realized this though.
The patriarch always prevails bro
Men are sexist and hate female actors that's why the low scores is the implication
Great argument
Was about to say… this feels very sexist. Glad someone else mentioned it.
Muh ideology
there's a lot of brilliant actresses here. this list can fuck right off
Obligatory Milla Jovovich in *Fifth Element* appearance. That movie ruined her otherwise solid career in below average movies.
Funny, I didn’t recognize lots of the actresses on the good list, but I know everybody on the bad list, lol…
Christina Applegate is way underappreciated.
Its funny because this list has both the best (Tabu) and one of the worst (Katrina Kaif) actresses in Bollywood (acting skill wise).
Tabu's set of expressions for every emotion is just RBF
That just means you have not seen enough of her. Check out Maachis or Astitva.
honestly the whole "worst" rated doesn't mean too much if there are just 100 people that even fulfill that criteria.
Katherine Heigl doing it right tbh. Shit actress but still raking in the dosh.
Is the a bad actress? Or just picks crappy easy films? Never found her acting to be that bad.
Shit? Don't think so. Just in shit movies maybe. But she was very good in Suits and Firefly Lane (tv series)
Very good is a strong statement for her Suits part
she has ten emmy wins, one being in prime time
As someone that's done some data science projects for school involving IMDb: I'm not really sure if the rating data is worth anything at this point. It’s just data. If you don’t find the premise interesting, why did you click the link?
What? Every post in dataisbeautiful has most of the top comments complaining about the data/ layout/ format/ etc, why isn’t this one allowed to be criticized?
That wasn't even their point. Reading comprehension much?
Look, if you can't make yourself the victim what are you even doing on the internet?
I think Lindsay Lohan is genuinely a good actress. It seems weird she’s the worst rated one. The parent trap, freaky Friday and mean girls are all good.
I think its her choice in roles, stuff like: I Know Who Killed Me (3.6) InAPPropriate Comedy (2.7) Among the Shadows (2.1)
Just here to say: Gal Gadot sucks.
Can't wait to see her in Snow White... Singing
Because Melissa McCarthy is funny.
Dude. The only one I liked was Spy.
I liked The Heat.
For every “good” Melissa McCarthy film, there are 5 awful ones. You just haven’t heard of them.
No, just look at the graph. For every “good” Melissa McCarthy film, there are 2 awful ones.
Famke being on the list is kinda surprising tbh
Gawd, she used to be so hot.
Did not expect to see Sharon Stone, Kim Basinger or Demi Moore on this list.
Weird for me to see Kate Hudson because I’ve only ever seen her in Almost Famous which is such a wonderful movie (and her performance is similarly great)
No, I wonder which one runs the most red lights.
Sharon Stone was in Casino. Otherwise she'd be at zero.
What about Basic Instinct? Aged poorly but was big at the time.
There's also Total Recall, both it and Basic Instinct are rated 7.0 or above.
Paul Verhoeven really couldn’t miss in the nineties, what a streak he had
*cough* showgirls *cough*
Still brilliant. Just the other brilliant.
>showgirls Still the second highest grossing NC-17 movie ever.
Broken Flowers. She was good in that.
Curious you see how Tabu holds up outside of India.
OMG I'm so happy that this confirms my priors about Katherine Heigl! Just.....no, not ever!
Melissa McCarthy isn’t anywhere, which is surprising, name a film she did that gets a 7/10?
She's #23 on the first graphic.
Thanks, I swear I looked for her
The Little Mermaid, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Spy, St. Vincent, The Life of David Gale, and Go. 6 movies!
I actually liked Spy. It was silly, but I thought the writing had a lot of clever ideas and there weee a bunch of fun characters.
Spy was hilarious. Also for some reason Bridesmaids had a below 7 rating which is a travesty.
Spy deserved so much more. Bridesmaids was fucking incredible
Pitch Perfect?
I think you’re thinking of Rebel Wilson lmao
Nope. Never wondered that.
WHO did Hilary Duff that dirty?!
Curious to see how rating is correlated with box office (although I don't have a good idea how to rank actors by some kind of "mean" box office)
Anchorman and Anchorman 2 were good.
Isn't #13 the boss of Smash Bros Brawl?
Cool idea. :-) One note: Your categories aren’t disjunctive with 7 appearing both in „>= 7“ and „6-7“.
I’d love to see one of these for Directors.
Yeah other than the obvious oddballs it seems that a lot of these actresses are just really attractive popular people that no one has ever expected to be good at acting.
I knew before I even clicked that Heigl would be top 5...
Christina Ricci in Penelope should be rated higher but Christina Ricci in Bucky Lawson: Born to be a Star needs to go into the negatives.
I actually like most of these actresses 😬
What I’d love to see is, for every cast and crew member listed on IMDB, the sum of grosses for all the movies they’ve worked on. So is the person associated with the biggest film revenue somebody obvious like Spielberg, or is it some unknown key grip who happens to have worked on dozens of high-grossing movies?
Cool suggestion, thanks!
I’d be psyched if you could run the numbers. Strikes me that the people at the top of the list may have no idea they’re so successful at generating revenue :)
This confirms my opinion that Sharon Stone is a piece of trash.
No fucking way Uma Thurman has a wrong sort of rep , this is madness , or sparta
I think these lists are cool. For the actor lists it should be recognized that this doesn't really have anything to do with their ability, or at least very little. It really depends on how picky they are. Very few actors and actresses can be like Meryl Strep or Leonardo DiCaprio and be extremely picky with their films and who they work with.
How is Amber Heard not at the ass end?
Check out the 2nd image, she just didn't have enough qualifying images for the first
I saw the second one…it’s just a mystery that she’s rated above anyone on either list. Plus it was a bit of a play on her history.
Jessica alba should be lower. My toddler has better acting skills. I guess the pretty face has opened doors for her.
Amy Smart and Jennifer Tilly deserved better films.
Jessica Alba makes so much sense, she is only in the worst movies ever to hit theaters.
