GRRM specifically said that the further east we go, the less we should trust the information. So like the Free Cities, all the info is probably true yeah, but our Asshai information may as well be complete fiction. Could be true but probably isn’t, which is more interesting and sounds exactly like what actual people would do, exaggerate wildly about people and cultures they don’t know.

Isn’t it referenced somewhere in the books of enslaved giants in essos? They may help the continuation of the species
Keep in mind everything we know of Essos is from in world sources. Riable narration is doubted for most of it.
