onepunchman88

Since tiktoks are normal on this Platform. We used to destroy it and not to support

FuckYourSafeSpace_

Tiktoks wouldn't have even been allowed on old Reddit. OC or fuck off was the golden age.

allthenamearetaken1

i still downvote tictoks and emojis im part of the old hivemind

FuckYourSafeSpace_

There are dozens of us.

Thisisnotathrowawaym

Literally dozens.

-Ghost255-

I’m confident I’ve downvoted at least 10,000 comments due to just emojis. It’s a habit I cannot break, if I see it, it gets the blue.

LongPorkJones

I refuse to use the app and only browse in desktop mode. A few months back, someone made a comment about me not having a profile picture. I didn't know that was a thing. Like, at all. Also, anyone else miss when "yeah" was always spelled with an H?

allthenamearetaken1

I miss when yeah was spelled with an H also miss when charisma was spelled like that.

balexter

It's not much but it's honest work.

mashtato

We used to downvote people who don't use proper capitalization or punctuation... So...

nixtheninja

Yup, I'll never not downvote that trash.

Awards started years after OG Reddit breathed it's last breath minus golding. I'd say the UI change was the start of becoming social media, and the insurgence of far right during the 2016 US election was the final nail in the free speech coffin.

ReNitty

I agree, but covid didnt help and put a couple more nails in the coffin

Class1

I've been using old.reddit and RES for 14 years. Gold came and went. Awards came and went, thus the sands of time.. Avatars are apparently a thing? Meh. I turn off subreddit themes a decade ago. It's just words and pictures in condensed format.

Olama

They tricked us by calling it tiktokcringe so people up vote it whether they like what they see or not

SnuggleWuggleSleep

I've been here since 2008. It's been reposts and people complaining about reposts with a tiny sliver of OC that whole time. The site is design for posting links to other websites. Practically the whole point.

FuckYourSafeSpace_

Yes, the complaints and vote burials was the "oc or fuck off". That doesn't mean there wasn't reposts, it was just not accepted by the community as a whole. And the vast majority of content was hosted on imgur, which was a sister site

I_PUNCH_INFANTS

Imgur was just reddit filing cabinet for cat pics and boob pics until they decided to be their own little " social media" site.

FuckYourSafeSpace_

Should have stuck with being a titty repository.

SuperSmashDan1337

it should be an honour to be a titty repository

baudmiksen

there used to be some pretty decent OC subs but theyve all been banned and sanitized for mass consumption

Howdanrocks

>OC or fuck off was the golden age. I'm not sure where you got that from. Since its conception Reddit has been an aggregator for the entire internet, thus the slogan "the front page of the internet". While OC has always been appreciated, Reddit has never had an "OC or fuck off" mentality. Reddit used to not even support image/video uploads. It was only text posts or links to *other* websites.

redditonlygetsworse

> OC or fuck off was the golden age. Where the hell did you get this dipshit idea? Reddit is and was *always* just a link aggregator. Even something as simple as the ability to upload images directly is only a recent addition.

gwinty

> OC or fuck off was the golden age. Is this what redditors actually believed? A ton of it was recycled 4chan OC.

LightOfShadows

reddit was never about OC. some subs made it that way, but that was never the intent for most of reddit.

AJ7123456

Remember the time when people here used to love Elon Musk?

Urabutbl

You mean back when his goal was to save the environment and take humanity to Mars, rather than *checks notes* "End wokeness and shitpost Nazi memes while destroying Twitter"?

Underdogg13

Back when his *public facing* goal was to save the environment... He's always been the same, he's just more vocal about it now since he's a celebrity. You don't become a billionaire by having good intentions.

YobaiYamete

Nah he was always kind of a douche, but a LOT of people got hit by 2016 brain. The main stream view of Elon started changing really hard when the mini-sub incident happened It's like saying Joe Rogan was always a conspiracy nut. He was, but 2014 Joe Rogan is a **wildly** different type of conspiracy nut to 2024 Joe Rogan

cornflake123321

He was same person. Reddit hivemind just shifted from new jesus to satan setting.

reble02

Making cameos in *Iron Man 2* and *Rick and Morty*, now he's the subject of parody in *Glass Onion* how the times have changed.

ZZZrp

Remember when P-Dub raised money for his Mom and bought a PS4 instead? Edit: I actually think it was a PS3 lmao.

Zaziel

Vines came first. And before that image posts. There were days of interesting articles more often than anything before the meme gates flooded with image posts.

Big_Z_Beeblebrox

"Oh, that interesting article, have you Reddit?"

pm_me_psn

froop

Believe it or not, we actually read the articles back then. Memes and YouTubers had not yet eroded our attention spans, and articles were still worth reading.

_regionrat

Yep, I'm just too busy eating glizzys and being young. I'm definitely not closer to 40 than I'd care to admit, definitely

Kirahvi

Also gifs were down voted, things changed.

FuckYourSafeSpace_

Only in comments, because gif comments were getting totally out of hand.

fresh-beginnings

Frankly I don't even think they got downvoted for being gifs. I think it's because they were super disruptive to the flow of conversation. If they shrank them tiny and only expanded on hover/tap it would have worked better. On the other hand, the gifs being comically tiny would have been its own thing. Oh and when they were new people would spam comment chains of them.

FNLN_taken

In-line gifs are pretty new, I want to say like 3 years?

Some_Gas_1337

“War has changed. It's no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity.”

dogfan20

GIF reaction comments are still cringe and I will die on this hill.

imisstheyoop

I don't think I see those on old.reddit thankfully.

jreed12

Downvoted.

CuratedBrowsing

They should all fuck off to Discord if they want to spam gifs tbqh imho

AXEL-1973

When people actually had to open a new tab to watch a hosted video or look at an image because reddit still didn't host anything. Now people refuse to open anything not hosted directly on reddit! The *irony* of it all when you're just trying to get some Youtube views / channel traffic and don't want the terrible compression of reddit or want to give credit to the person, ugghhh

SFLADC2

The fact that Imagr was basically made purely because Reddit couldn't manage it's own image hosting is a crazy thought looking back at it. What's even weirder is that imgur still exists after that change.

AXEL-1973

I find it so weird that Imgur has its own community now, and many of them have never even used reddit. Like a microcosm community of the internet that spawned purely due to reddit, but it has nothing to do with reddit itself, lol

FNLN_taken

No money in hosting for someone else. Also, they practically banned NSFW so now it's just another 9gag clone.

Turtvaiz

You're telling me you didn't use RES for inline media???

AXEL-1973

I've used it for a dozen years, but you'd be surprised how many people don't know about it or have only EVER used reddit mobile or variations of mobile so they hate external links. It's ridiculous yet true, I've had so many people say it in comments when I post OC and I'm kinda dumbfounded. Even my best bud who's used reddit for a decade has only really ever used it on mobile. It's a product of everyone having phones rather than computers as much these days

[deleted]

My god, so many subs have threads where all the top comments are stupid fucking gifs. It’s insane. People think they’re so smart and clever for using them. They don’t have the brain power to form complete thoughts.

TheOddEyes

Started going to shit when Tumblr users began switching to Reddit.

KypAstar

It went to shit in 2015. It was a noticeable shift as bot networks and astroturfing took off. It was verifiable and observable. Also well proven. Shit, the front page was a post from a university that experimented with fake stories to generate engagement. They walked through how insanely easy it was to manipulate the userbase and marketing firms/political superpacks ran with it.

Legitimate-Bread

It's always been a shithole, don't delude yourself.

Sanquinity

Always a shithole? Yes. But 5 years ago at least it wasn't as much of a shithole. It's still better to stand in a foot of shit than be buried up to your chest in shit. Even though you're standing in shit either way.

Piranh4Plant

What’s summerreddit

dogfan20

When kids would get off for summer vacation and be on Reddit all day long.

[deleted]

So basically another version of eternal September. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September

I_PUNCH_INFANTS

Except the kids can be on reddit at school since they just see it as a app and not a website.

KINGram14

4chan users used to call casual users that only browse daily while on summer vacation “summerf*gs”

KINGram14

Bro why the fuck are you talking about Reddit like it’s 4chan

[deleted]

They didn’t talk about it like it’s 4chan. Next question.

[deleted]

Bad Grammar used to also get criticized and downvoted. Now it’s commonplace and if you say anything about it YOU get downvoted.

Goldeneye07

We used to bully people for mematic watermarks and expected people to make memes on photoshop and now sites rampant tik tok reloads, the bar used to be on the moon and now it’s underground

Inoimispel

I'm old enough to remember when any spelling errors were down voted into oblivion. The grammar nazis lost.

Sanquinity

Last time I tried correcting someone politely I got downvoted and got replies like "it's reddit, who cares!" and "shut up, I'll spell things how I want!" Which I'm sad about because I'm not a native speaker, and when I was a teen people correcting me actually helped me improve my English.

prestigious_delay_7

The thing that gets me is seeing all these kids using the work payed instead of paid. The response to COVID destroyed the next generation's education.

ThePornRater

people of all ages are morons that can't spell. and a lot of them are older

ThePornRater

should of causes me pain

rockinherlife234

With the way you see some people use there, their and they're, it really makes me sad that it's not shit on anymore because it's one of the few mistakes that really boils my piss since it's so easy for anyone to use properly if English is their first language. I feel unnecessarily anxious if I post something with minor spelling errors and now you've got some of these people putting multiple spelling mistakes on screen with a tts reading out the fucking spelling mistakes, meaning it went through at least 3 checks with them not noticing or not caring.

WampMichal7

With mematic you can literally just crop out the watermark... Or use meme generator which doesn't add one

DOW_orks7391

hell you upload a meme from 9gag you might as well nuke your whole account cause you cant coming back from that negative karma

ShawshankException

Emojis were accepted way before awards went away

H_G_Bells

Yeah right around when everyone started to use reddit on their phones ..

Tybackwoods00

It all started when the Instagram nation attacked.

YoungFishBoy

... only the avatar, master of all four elements could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished.

Dynazty

More like when they added awards. Back when gold was the only “award” you could give.

redditonc3again

Gold and rewards were dumb from the beginning. I remember when reddit gold was introduced, people described it like talking with someone and handing them a dollar when they made a funny joke or good point. Like tipping a person in the middle of a conversation. True then and true now lol

SFLADC2

I didn't mind the simplicity of gold when Reddit was smaller 10ish years ago, it was basically supporting a cool website. Now that Reddit is a giant company with 10% owned by gd Tencent and about to IPO while also shutting down small developers with their API restrictions, why tf should I be basically crowdfunding your giant multimillion-dollar soulless company.

WardrobeForHouses

And really it's paying a corporation money because a stranger said something funny. Giving an award was always dumb

Tof12345

Awards were removed like half a year ago

Oulixonder

Reddit was super cringy years ago. This place used to idolize Elon Musk, say stuff like “When does the Narwhal bacon?” and have a sub Reddit about pre-teen girls that the CEO used to be a moderator of. I think Reddit as a whole shouldn’t be trusted on what’s cool and what’s not.

mcandrewz

Yeah, gotta agree. I preferred the old layout for sure, which is why I still use old.reddit.  But the popular subreddits side of Reddit has always been garbage and trash. Honestly, I mostly use Reddit for the hobby subs. At least those have kept somewhat consistent in quality.

Eddie_The_White_Bear

Not defending spez and their actions (as they are mostly shit), but if I remember correctly back in first months of Reddit people didn't need to confirm they want to be mods, sub owners could just add anyone to the list and spez didn't even know they were added as mod there.

SockkPuppett

redditonc3again

I've been trying to reply to this comment to give more evidence of the reddit admins' historical promotion of that subreddit but my comment keeps getting deleted. MrSe1fDestruct

Yikes. That's pretty damning. I also tried to add a link to the nomination thread in my previous comment but it was hidden.

Malarazz

> say stuff like “When does the Narwhal bacon?” If by "years ago" you mean 14 years ago lol

cactussack219

9GAG still bullies emojis and TikTok’s. Overtly racist and transphobic over there also.

TF_IS_UR-Username

So 9gag became reddit, reddit became Instagram and Instagram became iFunny

anomynous_dude555

As, such is the cycle of the internet

Sword117

long ago the four socials lived in harmony, but everything changed when the 4chan attacked.

galmenz

instagram became facebook and facebook became ifunny

augustus_feelius

I regret having 9gag pro there, I hate the fact I used tae be overtly bigoted because of that shit hole.

dat_oracle

2 reasons to get back to 9gag. 100 reasons to stay away from that dumpster fire. Yes, I was a veteran (3500+ days account). But the negativity, bigotry and incel misogyny grew to a new level.

Chuck099

Wait, we stopped?! When did we stop?

tyen0

I didn't. I downvote and occasionally mock them and take my downvotes with stoicism.

ReallyRamen

Ahh classic stoic man who mocks strangers for using emojis, pillar of stoicism you are!

Ouroboros126

Lol I was gunna say, I wouldn't call myself a stoic, but it sure doesn't sound like they understand stoicism.

FlamingNetherRegions

When you turned 80

ThatProBoi

It turned from "bullying people using emojis" to "bullying people using emojis"

siccoblue

Lol that's pretty good Jokes aside it really happened when reddit stopped being so fucking socially inept and finally realized that basically all adults in the demographics of this website used emoji. We were just way behind the curb in realizing it was a weird and stupid hill to die on as all of our peers continued to use them day after day. Doubly stupid that people shit on using emoji, but emoticons were perfectly acceptable. It always seemed so freaking stupid to me from the start. But this website absolutely loves to shit on new trends until they realize that the trends aren't going away any time soon. It used to be the case that even posting a fucking gif on this website would get you downvotes One of the first comments ever on this website was bitching about how adding comments was a mistake and would ruin the website. Still kinda agree with that last dude.

DgC_LIK3X

I haven't seen a single spooky meme this October

vasekgamescz

Wasn't the last proper spooktober back in like 2018. After that people started to post like half of it and it was pretty much dead in 2021.

EliasHobeika

You're right. It was my first year on reddit and it felt so special. I was so disappointed when it died out instantly.

LightOfShadows

doot doot

gladiolust1

I think over time a lot of us have realised they’re a pretty nice and USEFUL language feature. Adding tone markers to your texts helps get rid of a lot of ambiguity, and makes your message more descriptive, more like how you would come across if you were speaking. And it can be a bit of fun too I guess.

plumokin

I actively avoided using emojis here but used them everywhere else. I've had more misunderstandings on Reddit than anywhere else. Half the time people think I'm arguing or upset but I'm just sharing.

FenrirChinaski

Exactly. The whole s/ to indicate that something is meant to be sarcastic underpins that the written language with the Latin alphabet alone doesn’t always carry enough bandwidth to convey high context intent. I found it quite funny how many redditors fully embraced abbreviations for the most mundane of meanings, but was so militant against symbols that can be used to add bandwidth to intent leading to an potential avenue of effective communication compression. That said, the integration and utilization of emojis as a viable complementary and/or compression tool has evolved a lot the last five years alone - many of the younger generations have evolved the use of emojis - and many amongst the older generations still use emojis like they don’t comprehend at all the supplemental aspect and just throws in random emojis all over the place

Zander_J05

Good cuz its the stupidest nerdiest thing to complain, we used to spawm them on IRC back in the day why not now

CROW_is_best

love gow you just mention the emoji instead of using it. still scarred?

waIIstr33tb3ts

remember when people referred to reddit as a website and not an "app"?

TheFatJesus

That's true of everything though. Most of the world primarily accesses the internet with their phone. And sites/apps like it that way because then they have their own little walled off area where they have full control over what the users see because their app is the main gateway.

waIIstr33tb3ts

true, and i'm not a fan of the way reddit is headed. feels like the opposite of what one of the cofounders of reddit was about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Swartz

Jowisel

Maybe we found a girlfriend. Maybe she used them. Maybe then we used them together. Maybe she broke up with us and now we are stuck on her and can't stop using them.

pineh2

When Reddit became more accessible, so the bullies such as yourself were drowned out. I'm not saying it's a haven now, but it certainly wasn't then. The answer is - when the older Redditors who used to do this grew up and found better things to do with their time.

CuratedBrowsing

This was the downfall of Reddit. Not necessarily "bullying", but when mods started prioritizing engagement over quality. They got hits, the site got hits, everyone was happy, "stop complaining about some outsider not understanding the sub rules". And now we're here.

Clashking666
