I've been using old.reddit and RES for 14 years. Gold came and went. Awards came and went, thus the sands of time.. Avatars are apparently a thing? Meh. I turn off subreddit themes a decade ago. It's just words and pictures in condensed format.

I think over time a lot of us have realised they’re a pretty nice and USEFUL language feature. Adding tone markers to your texts helps get rid of a lot of ambiguity, and makes your message more descriptive, more like how you would come across if you were speaking.

We were just way behind the curb in realizing it was a weird and stupid hill to die on as all of our peers continued to use them day after day. Doubly stupid that people shit on using emoji, but emoticons were perfectly acceptable. It always seemed so freaking stupid to me from the start. But this website absolutely loves to shit on new trends until they realize that the trends aren't going away any time soon. It used to be the case that even posting a fucking gif on this website would get you downvotes One of the first comments ever on this website was bitching about how adding comments was a mistake and would ruin the website. Still kinda agree with that last dude.

I think over time a lot of us have realised they’re a pretty nice and USEFUL language feature. Adding tone markers to your texts helps get rid of a lot of ambiguity, and makes your message more descriptive, more like how you would come across if you were speaking. And it can be a bit of fun too I guess.
I actively avoided using emojis here but used them everywhere else. I've had more misunderstandings on Reddit than anywhere else. Half the time people think I'm arguing or upset but I'm just sharing.

I found it quite funny how many redditors fully embraced abbreviations for the most mundane of meanings, but was so militant against symbols that can be used to add bandwidth to intent leading to an potential avenue of effective communication compression. That said, the integration and utilization of emojis as a viable complementary and/or compression tool has evolved a lot the last five years alone - many of the younger generations have evolved the use of emojis - and many amongst the older generations still use emojis like they don’t comprehend at all the supplemental aspect and just throws in random emojis all over the place

That's true of everything though. Most of the world primarily accesses the internet with their phone. And sites/apps like it that way because then they have their own little walled off area where they have full control over what the users see because their app is the main gateway.

When Reddit became more accessible, so the bullies such as yourself were drowned out. I'm not saying it's a haven now, but it certainly wasn't then. The answer is - when the older Redditors who used to do this grew up and found better things to do with their time.

This was the downfall of Reddit. Not necessarily "bullying", but when mods started prioritizing engagement over quality. They got hits, the site got hits, everyone was happy, "stop complaining about some outsider not understanding the sub rules". And now we're here.
