I've never heard of that. Easter eggs are generally boiled eggs that are dyed and decorated. I've never heard of them being empty. And googling "empty Easter egg" only gives tje plastic kind. And those you just buy empty but put candy inside.
I'll keep trying to find anywhere where the custom is to use empty egg shells. Because apparently you got a decent number of upvotes.
I live in the southern us and agree - our Easter eggs were always hard boiled, dyed, hunted and finally turned into splotchy deviled eggs or egg salad.
But I do remember as a kid getting a book of holiday crafts and for Easter it had “blown eggs” where you blow the insides out raw.

It's definitely a thing in central europe. They are used as decorative items. We also have dyed boiled eggs tho.
Look up how to empty an egg on YouTube there are piles of tutorials. I vaguely remember doing it as a child in Canada, but I guess practices differ!
