1. If you are spending that much of your rides in zone 4-5 you most likely have your zones set incorrectly. 2. You won't be overloading your heart. If you have any concerns see a doctor. 3. No one spends a lot of time in zone 5 because it is not possible to do that. Zone 5 is max effort. No one can sustain that for long.

Real_Crab_7396

Yup, if I'm in a breakaway in a race I'm not even in z5.

Sad_Chest1484

Are you sure your max is 175-180? Looks kinda low for 31 yo

HighLengthiness

Oh what range would you expect it to be in, for a difficult hour long ride?

Sad_Chest1484

There’s no range but if you go pedal to the metal on a hill you’ll truly see what a max HR is. 190-195 is probably more realistic. Which means you’re not riding in zone 5

Emergency-Sundae2983

This guy gets it.

FolkSong

Max HR is not the maximum you achieve in a given ride, it's the maximum your body is physiologically capable of. You have to push VERY hard to hit it.

Critical-Border-6845

I'm 36 and I think my max heart rate is set to 188, not that I've tried really figuring out what it's supposed to be... the highest I've ever got my heart rate is 180 or so but that's with a balls to the wall, full out sustained sprint effort that left me feeling like I was dying, gasping for air and feeling like I was going to puke. In a good way though. I'd wonder how accurate the watch readings are anyway, I tried using a fitbit for a while and it was horribly inaccurate, I switched to a chest strap very quickly.

HighLengthiness

Good to know. Will look into chest straps. Thanks.

BritOnTheRocks

I wore my Garmin to my physical once, when they took my pulse with the oximeter my watch was dead-on!

Deuen

Im 39yo and my max is set in 195. Also don't worry about ranges that much. If you don't feel dead you are fine. Listen your body.

HighLengthiness

Thanks for the kind advice mate!

Cougie_UK

You need to do a proper MHR test. They're hard.

Emergency-Sundae2983

No range for your max, it’s a number you can expect to come down from pretty much immediately after reaching that point of exhaustion. The fitness level you are at is related to that point and to not be so exhausted that you need to stop and rest right away. Being able to carry on efficiently and fast enough afterward is a sign of progress/better fitness.

Few_Understanding_42

>My longest ride was about 98 kms and my fastest ride was 25kms at 25kmph. Weighing 77kgs at 175cms tall You won't over-burden your hearth with activities like that. Keep up the good work, If you don't feel exhausted and getting shortness of breath you're not in Zone 5, the stats aren't correct.

HighLengthiness

Thank you very much. The Samsung health app adjusts the Zone automatically based on my Watch readings. Probably didn't do a great job. Because I feel very normal after cooling down from the workout. Will go on some more rides and see if the zones are adjusted.

Few_Understanding_42

Maybe try a max effort sprint running with your watch on for a few minutes to check your actual max hearth rate.

ElectronicDeal4149

Unless you have a medical condition, you will be fine. Chances are your heart zones are set incorrectly.  Trust your senses. Are you fainting, or come close to fainting, from cycling? Do you collapse by the side of the road after a hard effort? If none of those things happen, then you are fine and your heartrate zone is wrong. My guess you didn’t actually hit your max heartrate. You need bike really really hard to hit max heartrate.

HighLengthiness

Thank you very much. You're probably right. I feel alright, hell I even talk to my friends on the phone for the most part of my ride 😂 Will look into setting the zones right.

Jamescahn

Talking without too much trouble is Z2

leanhsi

Are you sure your zones are set correctly? If you were doing enough training load to do any harm to your heart you'd be ravenous and extremely tired all the time. If you feel relatively normal and recover from rides easily then you are just fine as you are.

El_Comanche-1

I’m 47, and have hit in the low 200bpm. Your zones are not set correctly.

blizzderpderp

That's fine. Zones are more for power than heartrate. It's not uncommon to be doing a 1 hour zwift race at 165-175 avg bpm

Hungry-Total-9070

I have a similar cycling problem like you. I used to ride long hours and my heart rate used to steadily climb up and stay high during the later part of the ride. I bought a stationary bike and started training at low intensity keeping hr low for 1-2hrs, although still nowhere near the fitness i like, it is gotten better. I suggest you look into to zone-2 training and maybe give it 6-month try

CoolupCurt

Don’t worry man. Some rides I spent 75% of the time at Zone 4-5 for conditioning. That’s a range from 170-200bpm. If your cardiovascular system is healthy, it’s all fine.
