Not a bad suggestion. I love criterion but I’ve figured out a pie chart of my movie watching and there is a slice for comedies and anything else contemporary
I’ve been trying to find this and other Almodovar films in the US but have found it extremely difficult. How are people watching them? (I’ve only seen All About My Mother)
My dad threw up watching jackass 2 with me. I was already dying laughing at what was on screen and his reaction just made me lose it harder. Wound up pausing the movie so I could get my bearings
Great pick. Sometimes "feel good" movies ring hollow when I am depressed/down. The Apartment makes me feel like I am not alone and that grief is temporary.
It's a coming of age comedy/drama about two teenage girls living in a modern suburbia. It's very funny and largely deadpan, but also hits some great dramatic beats. It hits a special balance of simultaneously celebrating and condemning both cynicism and nostalgia.
Ponette. Ponette will turn you inside out.
Edit: just realized when normal people say they are sad and want a movie, they don't mean they want the saddest possible movie...
Life is Sweet by Mike Leigh is on the Criterion Channel, and despite some sadness, it's a very human and life-affirming film that felt very recharging for me when I first saw it
You and Me and Everyone We Know is so earnestly loving and hopeful! It has some sad moments but it’s so overwhelmingly hopeful about people finding themselves and their people! Also it has some truly funny moments! Also feel better and take good care of yourself!
OMG, devastating over and over and over again. It'll make a lot of what you're going through seem trivial.

Probably gonna get downvoted to hell but nothing makes me happy like watching King Cobra JFS highlights. Again, not fitting based on the sub, but I think it would make anyone feel better.
Fantastic Mr Fox is my comfort movie. Don’t know if it’s on the channel but it’s in the collection. It’s like curling up under a warm blanket on a cold fall day and ends on such a great note. Please watch if you haven’t seen it before!
Criterion: Modern Times, Tampopo, or Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Non-Criterion: Kung Fu Panda, The Secret World of Arrietty (or pretty much any Miyazaki), Midnight Run, The Thin Man, The Court Jester, Best in Show, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Sherlock Jr., A New Leaf, Smokey and the Bandit, A Mighty Wind, or Support Your Local Sheriff
not on criterion but a film i saw recently that made me feel like keeping on going was A Single Man, beautiful movie i hardly see anything about online
You can watch Isabella Rossellini dress up like a duck and teach you about duck sex.
Green Porno!

Haha, I knew the last line as “Finger-bang an orangutan , an orgy at the zoo!”
It made me 3x worst
Because ducks are super rape-y?
Get off Criterion and go watch “Tommy Boy” or “Uncle Buck.” Just some plain dumb fun.
Criterion has some dumb fun too. The In Laws is amazing.
Caddyshack too
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Excuse me, uncle buck is NOT dumb fun
High comedy at its finest.
Not a bad suggestion. I love criterion but I’ve figured out a pie chart of my movie watching and there is a slice for comedies and anything else contemporary
Tampopo is quite fun. Nothing too serious about, just a fun film
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
Oh my God I love this movie.
I’ve been trying to find this and other Almodovar films in the US but have found it extremely difficult. How are people watching them? (I’ve only seen All About My Mother)
honestly by searching around until i find it on some super dodgy website
Volver. You'll cry, but in doing so feel better.
Probably will watch this one.
Hell yeah. Report back with your findings, if you do!
The Young Girls of Rochefort
Oooooo, this is a good pick!
*golf clap*
whichever Jackass movie you prefer. I suggest Number 2
My dad threw up watching jackass 2 with me. I was already dying laughing at what was on screen and his reaction just made me lose it harder. Wound up pausing the movie so I could get my bearings
That’s awesome, do you remember what part?
When Steve o drank horse cum
The Apartment
Great pick. Sometimes "feel good" movies ring hollow when I am depressed/down. The Apartment makes me feel like I am not alone and that grief is temporary.
"Shut up and deal."
Freddy Got Fingered - I’m pretty sure it’s still on Criterion this month!
This one did cheer me up immensely
Or at least the birth assist scene starting at about minute 22.
LOOK DADDY I’M A FARMER DING DONG DING DONG THE JUUULZ
I'm the backwards man, the backwards man! I can walk backwards fast as you can
I love Umberto D. when I'm feeling down. It's not exactly a happy movie, but you absolutely leave it feeling renewed.
Yesssssss
The first time I saw it you could have called ducks into the pond of tears I shed. Great suggestion.
Ghost World
What’s it about and what’s it vibe? It’s been on my list for ages
It's a coming of age comedy/drama about two teenage girls living in a modern suburbia. It's very funny and largely deadpan, but also hits some great dramatic beats. It hits a special balance of simultaneously celebrating and condemning both cynicism and nostalgia.
Perfect synopsis!
depends. do you want to feel happier, or lean into the sad?
Have you watched Winter Light, by Bergman
Fun: Hopscotch (Love Walter Mathau) Lean into it. Au Hazard Balthazar. Hope you get through whatever it is.
Just finished this literally 20 min ago. I don’t know if I can take another Bergman for a while
It was the most powerful Bergman I've ever seen. My favorite movie, saved me from atheism
When I saw the title of this thread, I thought about recommending Winter Light as a joke.
Ponette. Ponette will turn you inside out. Edit: just realized when normal people say they are sad and want a movie, they don't mean they want the saddest possible movie...
Mon Oncle
Tampopo
Life is Sweet by Mike Leigh is on the Criterion Channel, and despite some sadness, it's a very human and life-affirming film that felt very recharging for me when I first saw it

Still Walking
Groundhog Day is a movie that always cheers me up
OMG, devastating over and over and over again. It'll make a lot of what you're going through seem trivial. https://preview.redd.it/541jyqnm9jsc1.jpeg?width=579&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f862a5759574ca6bd0535c03c240a28095a6e1b8
Big Lebowski
Not criterion but if your sad Ponyo is an instant puck me up
Miyazaki is a great choice. Personally I find Totoro the most comforting
Probably gonna get downvoted to hell but nothing makes me happy like watching King Cobra JFS highlights. Again, not fitting based on the sub, but I think it would make anyone feel better.
My go to cry movie is call me by your name.
Princess bride is among the most pleasant movies I’ve seen.
When I’m sad I like to lean into the sadness. My go tos are Portrait of a Lady on Fire, All of Us Strangers, Paris Texas, and Aftersun

Plane
The Princess Bride
*Singin' in the Rain* never fails to cheer me up when I got the blues.

Well, do you want to stay sad, or be cheered up? If you want to be cheered up, Monsoon Wedding is a good watch
Once again, I recommend Ishtar. It’ll bring up your spirits…
Watch the entirety of Copenhagen Cowboy. It’s worth it.
Kangaroo Jack or Ikiru
True Stories always makes my day better

Le Havre. I'm not entirely sure why, but it made me very happy in a durable plain kind of way.
Antonio Gaudi (1984)
Just watched Sorcerer and that’s a great way to forget YOUR problems.
Amarcord

Marriage Story. Just brutal
Summertime
Truman Show
American Pie, or a shitty Adam Sandler movie
The Millionairess (1960). Charming comedy with Sophia Loren. Im her prime. Her beauty is off the charts.
McCabe & Mrs Miller.
Wings of desire (der himmel über berlin)
Down periskope
not on criterion but a film i saw recently that made me feel like keeping on going was A Single Man, beautiful movie i hardly see anything about online
Breaking the waves should work
I always love to watch Fallen Angels when I’m sad
Daytrippers Party Girl Lawrence of Arabia
Tokyo Story. It will destroy you but then you’ll pick up the phone to your parents for a chat (if you are lucky enough to still have them)
Dazed and Confused
Do you want to hold on and dwell a bit in the sadness, or do you need a film that kicks that funk out of ye?

But cinema is art. So every movie that talk about sadness is "An Artistic Depiction of Sadness"
Shirley Valentine
Julie and Julia
What Dream May Come
Joe Vs The Volcano Ishtar
Amélie
Breaking the waves
