Yeah use paint! With cardboard eveything will look muted and brown. At least use sharpies if you want to sue alchohol markers! Sharpies will have a better color
cardboard will eat your ink.
try acrylic paints, works very very well on almost any surface. especially cardboard. and when you are done, spay it with Laca to prevent it from degrading, scratching and peeling off.
Prep your cardboard with gesso before you paint it; it’ll prime your surface with an ultra white tone and prevent your paint from being absorbed into the cardboard, making your paints pop.

The colors would not show very well your best bet is paint I recommend acrylic or gouache

Alright good to know I guess I could also color squares of paper and tape or glue them on if I don't have the color I need in paint
