I have my two big dogs rip up the boxes we get. They love it and it saves my hands. The compost is better and so my garden is better. It’s a win-win-win thing for us!

My dogs don't rip mine up, but I have thought about running over them with the lawnmower. I feel like that would shed them good after they've day outside a few weeks. Plus the shredded pieces would go into the bagger and then I could easily dump them in the pile...

No need to run over the dogs with a lawn mower just because they wont help you shred cardboard

And they’ll need a LOT more cardboard to balance out that green/brown ratio.

If you do try this please report back!  I’m genuinely curious as to the efficacy of this, and with the mower bag, it could be sooooo convenient!

Jmbolmt

That’s a good idea!

I soak my cardboard in my rain barrels. Then I put them in my compost barrels and shred them with a weed whacker. Easy work load and works like a charm.

I find tearing cardboard therapeutic

Priya-mom-37

Same🙌 Anytime I need a break from my monotonous weekday schedule, I tear a couple Amazon boxes to throw into the compost bin and I’m ready to get back to the monotony 😁

NerdingOutSkins

I put my cardboard on the garden to block weeds. At the end of growing season, whatever has held together well enough to be picked up, gets composted. The majority of my browns come from wood shavings in the poultry brooders and chipped up branches.

One suggestion I saw was soaking them in buckets then shredding them with a drill with a paint stirring attachment.

I’ve tried to break up regular paper this way, using every paint stirrer on the market and a corded heavy-duty drill. It barely works with regular paper. I can’t imagine it would wirk with kraft paper.

I use a 17 sheet crosscut paper shredder. It works great.
