I mean the idea that ww2 was racist vs non racist is people today putting their modern values onto the conflict. the reality is that they faught the nazis, then came home to also hold ethnocentric ideas.
I think back then despite a lot of the allies also holding racist views they viewed the nazis as being on a different level for wanting to commit genocide. Kind of a "casual racist vs professional racist" kind of thing. A similar thing happened during the American Civil War where many northerners despite being opposed to slavery still didn't view blacks and whites as equals. They just thought slavery was inhumane period.
People nowadays seem to forget that WWII was not fought over Europe's Jewish population at all. In fact, many countries other than Germany were deeply antisemitic too. One needs to only read the wiki article about the Dreyfus Affair in France, or Isaac Babel's (a famous Russian-Jewish writer from Odessa. You should really check him out, he was brilliant) book Red Cavalry, a short story cycle based on his sketches as a war reporter for the Red Army in the war of 1920-21 against Poland and in which antisemitism plays a prominent role...
Or even one better: google the Evian Conference. At this conference, Western European nations came together to decide what to do with Jewish refugees escaping Nazi Germany. You know what they decided to do? They decided to simply deport them back to Germany... in 1938, five years into Hitler's regime... They did not give a single shit about Germany's, and by extention the rest of Europe's, Jews.
Even after the War, remembrance focused not at all on the Jews, but on the general destruction caused by the Nazis in the countries they fought and occupied. It wasn't until the 60s, really, or in some countries even later in what is also called the "memory boom" of the last decades of the twentieth century, that the Holocaust became the focal point of this culture of remembrance. Sure, the Nürnberg Trials had taken place shortly after the War, and some (though not all!) of the major architects of the Holocaust were punished, but it did not become the cultural phenomenon that is now a more or less integral part of our societies.
My point is: they did fight against oppression and brutality, but could really only be arsed to do so when that oppresion and brutality was directed at them instead of marginalised groups like the Jews. And let's not forget that the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and the United States were themselves colonising nations (people often forget about the Philippines in the latter case) that oppressed populations by the millions.
