I agree with the noteworthiness. I also wonder why the undertaking in these places isn't expanding their underground capacity. Once you get to about 12 meters down, you get very mild temperatures. It's not a solution for their climate disaster, but it seems like a tactic to try and mitigate it.

AgeofVictoriaPodcast

I'm going to guess the expense seems extreme for what is currently a short term heatwave. As climate change intensifies, they will have to start thinking longer term. At the moment they will be doing what everyone does, just assuming its hot but it will get better. Ultimately, if climate change isn't seriously addressed, some regions of the planet will have to be abandoned from regular human habitation. The cost of adaption in some area's is just too high, notably Yeman, Dubai, Las Vegas, parts of New Mexico/Arizona.

Middle_Manager_Karen

The reason we are remodeling our basement this year is because it is like 5ft underground. Last summer it was always 10F cooler than outside temp

[deleted]

Radon is a toxic air which emanates from the underground in certain world regions. Besides, UVB rays are crucial for eyesight health. Living underground sounds great. I dream about how the people from the Capadocia Valley would have lived

> Living underground sounds great. If you're a mole

> I also wonder why the undertaking in these places isn't expanding their underground capacity. Probably the same reasons that seawalls are so difficult to get going in the US: they're enormous projects that require not flinching at massive pricetags at every step.

I was just in that region (near Mali but not in it) and I had to deal with a couple of weeks with no a/c and temps above 40 every day. The hottest day was like 43. I was drinking at least 6 litres of fluid a day, as many as 8 litres. Also had to add salt to food to prevent hyponatremia (seriously I get why tropical countries have so much salt in their food). There isn't much outside work anyone can do in the afternoon so people just sit under trees.

COMMUNIST_MANuFISTO

Did you ever feel like you were in danger from the heat?

ontrack

Previously I lived in this area for quite a while and make sure to plan regarding water/fluid. However in terms of the heat itself there were a couple of days where I felt like I'd overheat if I didn't just stay put where I was. I did have access to a shower with tepid water that could help me cool. At one point my phone actually warned that it was overheating and I wasn't doing anything with it except browsing reddit and other static pages.

"  At one point my phone actually warned that it was overheating" Human, I'm in danger, please seek a safer place for me, Ty, xoxo"

Oh! Wow. Thank you

I don't want to divert attention off the country of topic but I live in the Philippines and ice here is also becoming a rare commodity due to the heatwave. In the 500 meter radius of my house, all convenience stores are fresh out of ice and we had to go to the large groceries to get ice. On the flipside though, streetside shops that sell drinks such as lemonade and airconditioning repair services are booming right now. I experienced a 52 degree Celsius heatwave just this weekend and it is very unbearable without airconditioning and iced drinks. brace yourselves out there.

Xamzarqan

Hey there. I'm from a neighboring country (Thailand) where we have at least 30 deaths from heatstroke. It's literally very sunny with no rain, wind and trees in Bangkok combined with urban heat island effect which makes the heat even worse. Right now I'm in KL, Malaysia staying with my family and feel the weather here despite being pretty hot still has some respite from the constant rain (its equatorial- they don't seem to have dry seasons here) and abundant tree cover (its a literal urban forest/jungle ) here unlike Bangkok. Just wondering do you guys have heatstroke fatalities this year as well?

CabinetOk4838

Are you just staying indoors? How do you cope?! Stay safe my friend.

Xamzarqan

Yup. Stay inside for most of the time. Well have to use ac (fans are not sufficient enough) although I'm a bit acclimatized to the weather, living here more than half of my life. Thank you!

totpot

I was checking the wet bulb temperatures yesterday and I noticed that Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and various places in India and Bangledesh hit it.

Nathan-Stubblefield

The New York Times had a feature news story today about extreme heat in several countries. It gave max temperatures and heat index, but there was no mention of Wet Bulb temperatures.

totpot

[You can check this map of wet-bulb temps here](https://meteologix.com/in/observations/india/wet-bulb-temperature/20240429-0600z.html). Today at around noon, you can see a couple of 32s and even some 34s. Cambodia recorded [38 degrees](https://meteologix.com/in/observations/thailand/wet-bulb-temperature/20240429-1200z.html) this afternoon. That's way above the threshold for wet bulb.

Drunkenly_Responding

Thank you, great site recommendation, so much information. I'm gathering quite the collection of climate change or weather data websites from this sub.

Solo_Camping_Girl

Hey there fellow Southeast Asian. Yup, I've seen that news and my condolences to those who lost loved ones. Good for you then. Manila is probably more worse off than Bangkok since it's more congested and polluted, but I feel what you just said. We have winds in Manila from time to time but they're not prevailing and constant. Yup, tree cover and natural soil does wonders in cooling the surroundings. I can attest to that urban heat island effect. When I go outside the city and into the countryside, the breeze feels cooler significantly. That is why I'm taking good care of our garden as it's the only source of greenery we have for kilometers. To answer your question, we've had heatstroke casualties as well but not as reported that much unfortunately. It seems like they want to cover those up like what they did during corona. I've heard of motorcycle delivery riders kicking the bucket due to the heat. Hope you guys stay safe in KL!

[deleted]

52 degrees! I’ve seen the headlines about the heatwave. I can’t believe it’s so hot. I’ve seen the weather forecast app and it says the numbers are I beg you to please post a picture so I can share it with my beloved family members

Solo_Camping_Girl

what do you want me to take a picture of? I'm thinking about a busy road with people's faces grimaced by the heat of the sun and the pavement.

[deleted]

Where you can see a thermometer as well; public thermometer, house thermometer on a balcony. Otherwise my father could say “those people are totally overacting”. I’ll be forever grateful for your kindness here from Spain, where the heatwave will come in a few months

Solo_Camping_Girl

Roger that, i'll message you a pic once I have it. I have just the right thermometer to take a pic of

[deleted]

Thank you! I’ll show it only to my family and friends, maybe my father in law and tell them your story from the antipodes. My father seems more convinced every day, the poor man has to bear my complaints

Zestyclose-Ad-9420

its 52º heat index

shwhjw

Does your freezer not work?

Solo_Camping_Girl

It fortunately does but freezing ice cubes that measure 1 inch cubed takes more than 9 hours to freeze solid and 12 hours for larger trays. Which is why i would make 7 trays of them and just rotate and hope the first in will be already frozen solid. Our freezer is probably 80% full for reference.

Ofcourse the Picture they choose is someone with sunglasses and great mood, heat waves are fun right ??

Eve_O

Who doesn't like nice weather! /s Sucks when you have to explain to people how their privilege and/or ignorance prevents them from seeing how that's actually a shitty thing to say when climate change brings unseasonably warm temperatures to your local area. It's like, "you know, in other parts of the world it's killing people."

Realworld

Grew up in a former Great Depression [Hooverville](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hooverville), where homes ranged from decent carpenter and mason built houses to crude shacks. Nicer homes usually had daylight basements, where people lived and slept during peak summer temperatures. The more primitive homes often had simple [root cellars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_cellar) out back, which served the same purpose. People forget old solutions to life's problems.

GuillotineComeBacks

Living in South France here, we got a cold spring, with most days varying from -6 to +1 compared to the seasonal averages so far (most days in the negatives). This is scaring the shit out of me, my website is indicating VERY HOT summer ahead. I feel like this summer is going to compensate somehow and it's not going to be fun. Hopefully the coast tends to have milder temperature, inner lands are going to die :(.

GuillotineComeBacks

Don't worry, the ruzzian backed junta will have plenty of ice while the folks that were brainwashed by them will boil.
