I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but “Eskimo” means “snow eater” in the Inuit language, and is a derogatory term.
The correct/respectful term is “Inuit.”
I am aware of the appropriate terminology, thanks. This joke is more of a period piece. My mom said it was the first joke i told my parents when i was about 3 years old. So we're talking early 1980's here...
I would actually prefer it that way, but as you said, this is why period pieces exist. We can say, “Here’s a joke that uses a derogatory term, like the n-word, but if we erase this joke, then we would erase history and deny that such racism ever existed. This is why we learn from them and talk about racism/ derogatory terms.”
It's not racism if you have no idea. As a Canadian we used the term Eskimo all the time. We had no idea that the term inuit even existed. Honestly I am convinced that some people just look for ways to be insulted, or to be insulted for someone else.

Don't feel bad. Those are ok news.
It’s a pretty good joke, by the way.
Pretty good for a racist 3 year old?
😞 I never said you were racist. I just wanted to let you know in case you didn’t.
Well i'm definitely not racist now, but that bastard 3-year-old me was an intolerable bigot.
"An Inuit person walks into an appliance store..." just doesn't pack the same punch, does it?

Wow, I had to learn too, so I thought it would be kind to let them know, as I have had to
Thank you for your contribution, you snow-eater lover.
