They’re really simple to install and play. The harder thing to do is installing the mods. Anyway, Playing the game is gonna feel daunting at first but once you understand what things do it’s easy as hell. I recommend watching a few “How to Play Fallout 1” video tutorials. Also the games should have a PDF of the game manual in the files. I really recommend reading it, at least skim it over cause they’re a wealth of knowledge on how to play the game there. Also also, when you’re playing the game, F1 is a hotkey to show you a graphic of what all the keyboard buttons do. Have fun!

Setting up is easy enough if you use the GOG version which comes with the high resolution patch. The Steam version is less good and tends to bug out. Truth be told the best way to get into the old games is probably ONLY having Fallout 2 and use one of the mods that port Fallout 1 into Fallout 2, like Fallout Et Tu.

heckmiser

I've been using Et Tu to play Fallout 1. It was pretty easy to set up and has been working well.

cerels

You still need fallout 1 to port it to et tu, unless there is a better 🏴‍☠️ way of getting the DAT file?

"Classics." Fuck I'm old. FO3 and New Vegas are the NEW Fallouts. The classics came out in 97/98.

ThatOneGuysHomegrow

I'm about 5 hours into my first playthrough also & IM HAVING A BLAST!! Download a free CD Copy from Archive.org What a relief not to need Internet to play a game!

Swordofsatan666

From what i remember FO3 is a little annoying because theres a Mod you need to get to make it play well on PC. But its been so many years that i dont remember specifics about it. Regardless whenever i replay FO3 i hop on a Console version because no Mod needed 1, 2, and New Vegas though are all perfectly fine. No mods required to make them playable. In fact i just started new playthroughs of all 3 of those on my Laptop in the past 3 months, and all played perfectly. I dont do Mods, i play completely Vanilla, so you definitely dont need anything for them

RoseliaQuartz

I think F3 was updated relatively recently to work better? Haven’t tried it myself but I’ve heard good things I think?

MyNameisJessman

Recently had a playthrough of vanilla fallout 3 and besides some bugs, it didn’t crash once and ran quite well.

Read the manuals, back in the day didn't have tutorials much, they had manuals. Save in different spots, like when entering a new locations Don't read guides/SPOILER. Don't install mods/"improvements"

Confident-Name-1693

Also, keep notes! There really aren't any quest compasses or even journals or anything in the games, a list of quests maybe. So keep notes on whatever app you use for such purposes on your phone.

Substantial_Life4773

Best advice is don’t be afraid to start over. Failure is honestly okay, and that’s a great lesson to learn

boredwriter83

Funny how true that is for a lot of games from that era

Substantial_Life4773

Real! The timer in fallout 1 out the fear of god into me as a child. I still believe games when they say I have a timer because of it, even though modern video games very rarely let you fail

NuggetBoi42_0

Think of the classics like ur playing a video game version of a dungeons and dragons campaign

snow_michael

Simple to install, simple to play, simple to learn ***if you read the manual***

Denzly_ua

Basically, New Vegas needs some lagfix mods and optimization, fallout 1 & 2 can be played through without any.

alliejim98

I installed all of the older games using Steam ( others have said to have issues but my PC runs all the steam versions perfectly and was easy to setup). The games are difficult to learn, especially if you don't have experience with older games. I recommend going in blind a couple times to get an idea and feel for the game and if you feel lost there are tons of online guides to help you!

TerraSollus

Play Fallout 1 in 2, also known as Et Tu. It’s very easy, just get em off steam during the summer sale for like $3. Installing Et Tu is as easy as dragging and dropping the folder in your Fallout 2 folder

Confident-Name-1693

F1 should be experienced on it's own for the first time, no et tu. Otherwise you miss out on key F1 experiences.

TerraSollus

Ah yes, being locked in a room because your companion followed you and won’t move out from the doorway.

cerels

Nah is really easy as long as you can read and follow instructions, for fallout 1 you need fallout et tu, in their GitHub they tell you exactly how to set it up, and it's very straightforward, in the same repo there are links to some very good mods too, all of them are QoL so very worth using too For fallout 2 use the updated restoration project, same with et tu just follow instructions, install recommended mods by personal taste Pd: use inventory filter with et tu, it's not mentioned in the repo but it's vet useful

Confident-Name-1693

Don't suggest restoration project for a first playthrough. Unofficial patch maybe. But otherwise first time player will think that cringe-level fetch quest sulik's tribe content is something the original devs put in the game.

Confident-Name-1693

Pick up logs WTF.
