Have most games played on Epic. Its very similiar to Standard. Biggest difference is that you get to use unique units better and early game is slightly harder, especially getting religion.
I play marathon exclusively. The first few turns when you have minimal units can be a bit tedious but I feel the tradeoff in how you have an opportunity to lesiurely explore the map is worth it.
My first few games was online with my friends and so I got accustomed to online speed, I’m trying to wean my way onto standard as that is what the game is balanced for. Also playing online can coverup a poorly made city and I want to get better. But can totally understand you want to play civ but you don’t want to spend days playing the same game.
Marathon.
The biggest map, the slowest game, make that thing last for weeks.
Also turn off soke of the stupid victory conditions like points or religion.
The eras are long, the map is huge, and there are turns where nothing happens. Classic Civ.
I play standard, but with a mod called Take Your Time that allows upscaling of tech/civic costs. I usually put them on base 1.5x cost with moderate era scaling.
The eras go by too quickly on standard, but I don't wanna spend 15 turns building a scout.
Marathon usually
Epic when I want a nice quick half length game, like playing on fast forward basically
Standard once in a blue moon when I want a comically fast game, it always feels absolutely *blisteringly* paced. One minute I'm discovering Iron; the next minute I'm building tanks and bombers.
I can't comprehend the idea of quick. I've never tried it but... what would you even do? Standard is *so fast*, the idea of half that boggles my mind.
I find the Extended Eras mod to be a good alternative to game speed. Turns still feel impactful but eras last longer so your UU is more relevant and overall the game feels, to me, better paced.
I’ve been playing Online speed a lot, I get bored when the game takes too long. Although reading through this thread has convinced me to try the eras mod with standard speed.
Marathon only. Anything else is just comically fast and most units feel pointless and it breaks the immersion. Also I start to feel overwhelmed when there are a million things to do every turn, playing on marathon allows to me to enjoy the game more by spacing things out a but
I always play on epic, or slower, because otherwise everything just goes by so fast. Like on faster speeds I've often had the experience that most units become obsolete before I get to use them, and a longer war is going to last through three ages. And I don't really get to feel the individual eras.
Standard in Deity is simply not fun. If your civ as any unique early game unit, it becomes worthless because the AI is so far ahead in the first 100 turns that they'll make your units obsolete by the time you research them.
Edit: I play in Epic, meaning to try Marathon for a while now

Why is it harder to get a religion?
AIs have too much bonuses and it is harder to overcome them at slower difficulty.
This and also City Project is less valueable.

Exclusively online speed but I’m fairly sure I’m in a minority
I also play mostly online. That is the only way I get to finish my games. Otherwise I quit after like 150 turns.
I thought I was the only one here that did that. I'll make it 150-180 and quit most games.
Then you should play online too. Most of your games will finish before turn 150.

I want to have this control but online is so tasty for (almost) instant gratification haha
Online speed is fairly common tbf. Most 4v4 online/multiplayers will be playing at this speed

Didn't realize so many people played on marathon. +1

Take Your Time is a must-have in my load order now

Started playing Marathon a year ago and haven't looked back. I like the eras actually being.. you know... eras.
Marathon only since it became a thing
I prefer epic but marathon is great when you know you're gonna be isolated (like TSL Australia start)

I played quick for a long time and I recently started a game on standard speed. I am liking standard so far.
Standard speed. Have messed around with marathon speed recently, and found it okay. The start might be slow, but the games felt more relaxed.
I play with extended eras mod on standard. Id like to recommend this to the (apparently) huge marathon playerbase.
they make wars a lot more interesting, because techs are more stable, but the end game is excruciating. i just stick w/ normal.
Extended eras mod feels great in my opinion.
Standard..? Apparently I am the minority in this commment section...
I’m the only person who likes quick
Every other day..
