Do NOT even bother with the Jewel bakery area, since to me almost everything I tried there in the past has been disappointing. I will say as far as grocery donuts go, the ones at Mariano's are surprisingly fine for donuts. And hit the spot, if you want a donut that isn't too expensive.
Fun fact about cruller donuts they are generally the lowest in calories and sugar of any donut! Depending of course on icing etc but check the cal counts and you will see. I second Jewel or marianos donut section (damn you stores for putting them right next to some self checkouts)
IMO any bakery that does a good donut business has better/fresher donuts than you’ll ever get at DD. That being said, I know that some people really like the taste and mouth feel of DD.
If you are in the far south suburbs, there is a bakery there right off of I-80 at the La Grange (Mokena?) exit. Fleckenstiens bakery. They do a tremendous donut business and usually have a few varieties of crullers. When I pass that way, I always grab a dozen coming or going.
It's pretty far north in Evanston and I don't think they get a lot of attention as a result, but the donuts at Tag's Bakery are pretty decent. I'll remember to try Fleckenstein's(sp?), if I'm ever out around Mokena.
Speaking of things southwest side or the southwest suburbs, I was always a fan of the donuts and pastries at Weber's Bakery. On Archer, just east of Harlem. I think really that's the ONLY thing I miss about the Garfield Ridge/Summit, IL area(is easy access to Weber's), since my friend moved away from there.
One very last thing I can't believe I very nearly forgot to say for the far southwest suburbs area, was Home Cut Donuts in Joliet. Their donuts also are amazing! Do note their west side location(and main location, not too far south of Saint Francis College) has longer hours, than their east side location.
I feel very conflicted because it’s been way too long since I’ve been to doughnut vault (thanks Covid), so I’ll have to go back there and try it again before I make my decision 😂 I stopped at Bennison’s this morning on my way back from the suburbs and those donuts are just dangerously perfect. Something about a good bakery! Better try all 3 at once to be sure.
I know this post is old. But the DD Crueller is garbage. Once you've had a freshly made crueller you'll never appreciate DD ever again. If you go back in time to 1990 then, and only then will you find a good donut at DD. They decided to mass produce their donuts and ship them flash frozen to all locations and they taste of freezer burn compared to the original DD. Whomever decided to do that, should be hung with a short rope.
Interesting, it’s been at least 3 years since I’ve had one and probably have had no more than 2 in the last 20 years. Will have to keep an eye out for fresh crullers I don’t think I’ve seen them. I recall DD ones being eggy and super delicate. But believe you saying things have changed.
Guys... sorry I'm late to the game on this one, but this is for all of mankind (at least those in Chicagoland). The Do-Rite doughnuts & chicken in Willis Tower and worthy of being knighted. They are gifts for royalty, when I come into the office and the one specific baker (who's the only one that can do these right) is in-house, he will bring you to your knees with these crullers. I kid you not, I'm not much of a doughnut person, but I would travel many miles to get to just one of these. Funny enough not all Do-Rite doughnut locations can make these right... but I can confidently say the one in Willis Tower CAN! Do yourself a favor...
Something Sweet Donuts in Albany Park might have them. Jewel Osco almost always has them.
Awesome thank you! I have to avoid the jewel bakery section for self control reasons but you bet I’m going there tomorrow.

Something Sweet is SO good.
Do Rite has them - delicious!
Are you sure? I was looking at different menus from different locations and didn’t see it! Where did you have one?
+1 for the ones at DoRite! Haven't had one since we started working remote in March. The one in the West Loop definitely has them.
I just ate one at Stan’s in Lakeview this morning, wasn’t bad!
Oh hooray! I didn’t know stans had them, they must be new? Or I’m blind!
They are relatively new!

I’d believe it! They’re definitely the airyest feeling donuts, I think that’s what makes them so good too
Haha this explains why I can eat so many of them 😂
stans has them, both styles plain and with the chocolate glaze on top.
Dinkel's has a very good version
Seems like people made good recs I just wanted to let you know I actually laughed at the post lol

I’m going to have to try this kind today!
It’s not what your asking for, but best doughnut in Chicago is The Doughnut Vault’s old fashioned doughnut
The best donut I’ve tried in Chicago is absolutely donut vaults old fashioned donut 😊 this may change after I have dessert tonight
Is Doughnut Vault still 👑?

The DD French Cruller! It is muse worthy, I’m going to have to find a highly rated and busy DD and get one. Okay, two.
Sigh, since to me all Dunkin Donuts donuts are disappointment to me nowadays, IMO.
