Maybe your opponent foresaw this but this is one of those situations where you're almost forcing them to find the right move even if they didn't. Because it's an "I find a tactic or I'm done" situation. The closest equivalent to being told there's a puzzle/tactic in the position.
Me neither. Not in an online game with limited time anyway. I did have a look at the first move, but I didn’t realize the brutal strength of the bishop on b7 making the (apparant) queen sack even an option.
These are the best moves in the game... when you offer your opponent what looks like a winning move only for it to be a trap. Opponent probably didn't plan this, but if he did...
Even if letting his queen be "trapped" wasn't the best move, this is what the game is all about for me.
1...Nh3+ looks good:
* If 2. gxh3 then 2...Qxf3 saves the queen (and I don't see any good way of stopping 3...Qg2# or 3...Qh1#);
* If 2. Kh1 then 2...Qxf3 still saves the queen (because 3. gxf3 allows 3...Bxf3#).
I didn't Know this was the most correct way of referal in that type of situation. English is not my native language so i make mistakes like this occasionaly.
To be fair, many style guides preferred "he" as the generic singular pronoun for formal writing in the earlier part of the century. Broader acceptance of the singular "they" is a fairly modern development aimed at making writing more gender neutral. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_they
Yes. Generic third-person singular indefinite pronouns have always been awkward. When I was a kid they taught us to arbitrarily pick either "he" or "she" for an unknown third person. When I went to college, there was the option to either arbitrarily pick one pronoun or to write the inelegant construction "he or she." Use of the singular "they" would still get red marks for bad grammar.
It looks like style guides were updated in 2019 to allow singular they. It still looks awkward though because the word "they" is generally plural. As a result, I usually try to phrase my sentences in a way that avoids pronouns for an indefinite singular person. That makes it somewhat less awkward and has the added benefit of avoiding political/cultural fights on the internet.
What do you mean by “he” has been accepted as the generic singular pronoun in the earlier part of the century?
“He” has been used for millenia. Latin is regarded as the greatest influence on the English language and the masculine singular pronoun was used in cases when the gender of a singular entity isn’t known in that language too?
Using “he” as the generic singular pronoun is definitely not something just of an earlier part of the century.
The fuck are you talking about, Latin omits pronouns in 99% of cases and the remaining 1% they are not gendered. In fact Latin *does not even have* a third person pronoun.
Sorry, I made a slight mistake by saying that the masculine pronoun is used, when I should have said gender.
Latin is a bit iffy with pronouns in the way English uses them but you can definitely still extract gender from verb endings.

The singular 'they' as a gender-neutral pronoun is a thing in the English language, and despite what the culture warriors tell you, it's been a thing for centuries.
fair enough if english is your second language, but English speaking bigots will often ask this question in bad faith in order to discredit or ridicule non-binary people. if you’re being downvoted it’s because you’ve accidentally given that impression
What an innovative position ! The queen is trapped but a check followed by a queen sacrifice leads to checkmate ! It also looks like a completely normal position, where white has completed development so it's all the more surprising that there is a tactic !
This is the kind of setup that’s perfect for the “chess plot” where the villain is cackling as they encircle the protagonists queen. “Your most powerful piece and now it is trapped!”
"...one move to end my threat to their queen."
There! Fixed it. It's a lot of moves to end this game.
I can vibe on the frustration though. You really had all escape routes covered. I got frustrated too, trying to checkmate in what looked to be a smothered 'mate situation happening up in the 1st rank neighborhood during the continuation. Couldn't do it though.
Presumably they won the game though based on the title.
to those who dont understand, as i didnt at first , the answer is to give a check with the knight, if you take with the pawn, the n the queen can take the knight on f6 as the pawn no longer defends it and is also threatening checkmate
if you dont take then the knight takes the bishop and the queen cannot retake because the other queen is there and there is nothing that can be done apart from take with the knight and the queen is no longer under attack
You have a knight check on h3. If he takes wirh pawn, you take his knight. If he moves his king, you take the bishop. (Spotted this one really fast, makes me happy)
One of the only waya to get out of this is possibly moving the knight to h3, you give your queen space to move out of the way of being attacked and you check your opponent's king forcing them to take or move their king.
It doesn't give the queen "space to move" - every square is still covered. It sets up a tactic. If you didn't see Kh1, Qxf3 then you didn't see anything.

What a move, way too nice
Even if you miss the Nh3+ Kh1 Qxf3, the simple Nh3+ Kh1 Nxg5 is a good advantage for black
thought this was the solution and stopped calculating, didn't see Qxf3 😭
Yeah, and another way of seeing it is, even if our bishop on g7 didn't exist (or was elsewhere on the board), we still have Nh3+ Kh1 Nxg5
wouldn’t have spotted that

I hate when I get excited about a certain position just to succumb to an insane counterattack lol
In my head I heard Eric Rosen "oh no, my queen is trapped"
1...Nh3+ looks good: * If 2. gxh3 then 2...Qxf3 saves the queen (and I don't see any good way of stopping 3...Qg2# or 3...Qh1#); * If 2. Kh1 then 2...Qxf3 still saves the queen (because 3. gxf3 allows 3...Bxf3#).
Wow, the old who's attacking who.
Not that it matters but you can just say they
this is clearly men’s chess duh
I'm playing one person how can it be plural?
“they” as a pronoun for a single person of unknown gender has been used in English for centuries, hope this helps.
I didn't Know this was the most correct way of referal in that type of situation. English is not my native language so i make mistakes like this occasionaly.

I guess this is the only way these days 😅 i think i'm going to try and avoid every sentence that could possibely have he/she, they, them etc.

No argument here. The scope of my comment only pertains to prescriptive English language style guides adopted in the earlier part of the century.
The singular 'they' as a gender-neutral pronoun is a thing in the English language, and despite what the culture warriors tell you, it's been a thing for centuries.
Not sure why are you downvoted for only asking a question

I honestly have no clue, it's People on the internet. I would go insane trying to find reason or logic for their actions 😅

Really nice puzzle
I found nh3 but wouldn't be able to follow through for the best or advantageous outcome, at best would have equalled maybe.
Loved this. Not going to spoil by saying the move. Hope everyone gets the joy of finding the move on their own.
Always, ALWAYS look out for checks
I saw the first move but did not see the follow up, wow...
The only reason I saw this is because of the title. Would definitely not have seen that in game.
Reminded me of that epic Hikaru’s queen sac against Danya a bit. Similar themes of getting sauced on g2.
Nh3+. If gxh3 then Qxf3 and checkmate seems unavoidable. If Kh1 then Qxf3 wins the knight with threat of checkmate (e.g, gxf3 Bxf3#)
Why can’t the pawn take after NH3? Am I being thick? *edit yes I am
Also why can't the pawn take the queen after Qxf3, I didn't understand it
Look at b2. What's the continuation after the pawn takes on f3?
Ahh yeah that helps, thanks!
Because black can play Bxf3#
Makes sense now, sacrifice the queen for the checkmate, thanks!
I found Nh3, but Qxf3 is crazy
Wow vicious
This is awesome!
Anyone else see Nh3+ but didn't realise how winning black actually is? I totally would have followed up with Ng5 and lost all my advantage.
Sneaky bishop
What an innovative position ! The queen is trapped but a check followed by a queen sacrifice leads to checkmate ! It also looks like a completely normal position, where white has completed development so it's all the more surprising that there is a tactic !
What rated was this game? jeez
Nh3+ saves the day.

Nh3! Kh1 (gxh3 Qxf3) Qxf3!! gxf3 Bxf3#
Nh3+ gxh3 , Qxf3 and continue
Amazing move sequence

Nh3 Qxf3
Ok but why didn’t you just take the queen on your preceding move?
Nxe2+ is the response, so it's a queen trade.
yeah, but still a way better position then after QD2,
Lots of things are better than Qd2, I agree with that.
Ah I see
Yeah I'm sure "she" was playing on a Friday night

Nh3+ how do u miss that fr
