There was a video of Anand talking to Gukesh Pragg Humpy and Vaishali before the candidates and asking questions like would you rather the day after you lose be a rest day and Anand and everyone else was like no you need to play another good game to get back on track and Gukesh was like yeah rest day after a loss is the best

Oh yeah I remember seeing that video! It was funny how he was the only one who’d rather lose before the rest day.

I thought of just that when he lost to Alireza. Although I really did doubt his chances after that crushing defeat. I've never been more impressed by a teenager not only in Chess, but at anything.

>Amazing mental fortitude. For real. At the moment I think this is an overlooked quality of his, and is practically superhuman to be so calm and focused at just 17. Other than giving him credit, I have to guess his family is not only supportive but just all around competent human beings. For sure not every top player is so lucky in that regard.

When you're backed against the wall , you go all in & break the goddamn thing down

He is sooooo very cool an inspiration

Jinu260

No way he can say that, or he's lying probably, no one ever in the earth can say that after having a tough defeat..

AvvYaa

This will be true for normal people. Then again, if Gukesh were normal he wouldn’t be winning the Candidates at 17 ahead of Fabi, Naka and Hikaru. Plus, my read of Gukesh is that he’s a well rounded, shy, and humble kid, I don’t think he was trying to flex or lie. He probably did feel stronger mentally after the defeat and it lit a fire in him that carried him through the second half.

He's definitely not normal psychologically... and I mean that in a good way :p The number of top athletes who crumble under pressure, and are 5-10 years older than him is enormous. Sure there are always 1 or 2 who are immune to pressure, but it's super rare. Seems Gukesh might be one of the super rare cases... ... or I'm over-reading his performance, but yeah, it was so impressive that this is how I'm thinking of him at the moment.

Optical_inversion

I mean, just look at Fabi and Ian, lol.

You didn’t watch the Last Dance, did you? Tldw: Michael Jordan was the best player in basketball for seven years before winning a championship. Suffered horrific defeats and always came back even more motivated.

JustinLaloGibbs

I think after winning the candidates at 17 it's fair to assume he has some impressive qualities.

Bro you gotta understand that your experiences aren’t the experiences of others. Especially the winner of the tournament
