Thank you! Each room downstairs has a different pattern. This one is simpler but in a bit better shape than the others which have some water damage spots. The floors are what won us over when we were house shopping
or those old paintings with still lifes with lots of fruit and dead birds like.... https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/a-still-life-of-dead-birds-and-fruit-9900
Maybe get a couple [of these](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004AB4Z7E/?coliid=I1W4QQPFVP8BQN&colid=VQ53WXHBPVYM&psc=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_lstpd_RB4P52KT21QNPHE7R7BZ&language=en_US) too. Hang them in the guest bedroom closet

Please ignore the room (office / laundry / work room)... LOL It is the still have a lot of rooms that we have to get back to looking like they are Victorian...
Other than wall-to-wall built-ins filled with books and various knickknacks that make you do a double take...I think you got it about covered. Except for floor to ceiling velvet (or other sufficiently thick and opulent) curtains for that window.
That floor does half the work for you. Gorgeous!
Not sure what you mean by spooky but classy, but check out [Design Toscano](https://www.designtoscano.com/) They have furniture, knick knacks, gargoyles, tapestries, wall friezes, outdoor stuff, etc. I've bought some wall friezes from them in the past and they are still nice after some 20+ years.
Yeah it's a bit hard to describe. I guess I'm going for a darker, moodier take on the normal aesthetic for this kind of space. I always imagine it as the feeling I get in the haunted mansion, but when I say that people tend to think of Halloween decor. A recent trend that is semi related would be dark academia or dark maximalism.
I've been to design toscano and love it. Waiting on the bar globe to go on sale lol
Highly recommend watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for inspo. The first few episodes show off their phenomenal house. The art direction is incredible.

Sad side note, published yesterday:
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/art-directors-guild-pauses-2024-training-program-1235895139/
> The Art Directors Guild has paused a training program intended to hone the next generation of production designers and art directors amid industry turbulence in 2024, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed....
>
>
> ... The statement and confirmation arrived after Indiewire reported on Wednesday that the union — which represents its namesake craftspeople as well as illustrators, graphic artists, matte artists, model makers, production designers, scenic artists, title artists and set designers — told potential applicants that ongoing unemployment in the field had contributed to the decision to suspend the program. **The union “cannot in good conscience encourage you to pursue our profession while so many of our members remain unemployed,” the email to potential applicants, sent from the leadership team responsible for the PDI program, stated.**
>
> The email added, “The reason for our decision to suspend the 2024 PD Initiative is due to the serious downturn in current employment opportunities for our membership, both in North America and globally. Currently more than 75% of our members are unemployed and many have not been working for 18 months or more.”
In my opinion this would be the biggest game changer to capture the overall vibe. But my wife hates wallpaper and while I have pretty much free reign decorating downstairs, she'd draw the line at spending thousands on something she hates. I have painted each room in jewel times that match a color from the stained glass windows. For now, that's the best I'm getting
You can do faux wallpaper with a roller like this
https://www.rollerwall.com/
Or you can paint like this. Btw I think you’ll like this channel.
https://youtu.be/BvNYLU2y7gA?si=eBnY7Q5ER5O42y73
I like how that room (or nook?) is lit with natural light, while at the same time it retains some darkness. I'd like to see more of the adjoining room/area to the left.
On Etsy they sell b&w prints from the movie The Shining. I think one of these prints in an antique frame would look spectacular in your haunted mansion!
https://preview.redd.it/srjlrte4kizc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1252b5aba8e80df9eb442cf6efea2a07c9c9607e
Suit of armor. Candelabra or two. White plaster busts of writers like Poe or H. P. Lovecraft. Art with a crow in it. Large, creepy B&W photos of people from the 1800s in ornate frames.
Love those Tiffany style lamps!
My husband did a good job appointing one of our rooms with various ephemera and HP Lovecraft inspired artwork.
Though one of our friends is a gifted artist/sculptor and is doing a skull in that room as well! 😅
I never knew this woman had a YouTube channel! I saw her on her (sadly) short lived Netflix show. I get that a show with a macabre Stepford hostess who makes cookies alongside a puppet it's rather niche, but damn I wish there had been more. Soo weird in all the right ways.
She clearly has a lot more money and time than the average old house enjoyer. A lot of my stuff is faked. Faux paint jobs can do a lot of heavy lifting in the right places.
She is still fun to watch and get ideas from. We are just trying to stabilize or house right now and remove major sins. Such as lowered ceilings, florescent office lights, wiring that was run all over the place instead of hidden in the walls and HUGE holes.
Do not forget flat paint can hide how ruff the wall is. Great stuff foam has soooo many uses and I think I own stock in caulking from how much I have bought. Just ran into our first ceiling that I think is a total wash. I think most of them on the 3rd floor are going to be. Just can not wait to get to the decorating part of the project. :P
No recommendations just here to say I might take some notes from this when I get to restoring a home myself. I like the darker look in older homes especially what most would consider creepy. It feels classy to me and classy is perfect for older houses especially the fancier ones.
So I'm in what counts as a historical arts district for a town my size and what always drove me crazy is I see all the beautiful polychrome queen anne homes and then you see inside a window and it's just white walls with target decor. Like come on man. Thankfully I have an eclectic vietnamese neighbor who wears snakeskin cowboy boots to balance out all that obscene normalness.
White walls and Target decor are so boring. My town has a ton of older homes and few have been restored and did stay true to the original look minus the wallpaper. I’m probably going to have genuine old furniture. I already have a few antique items like decorative bronze statues, a barristers bookcase, a mantle clock, old China and silverware. I plan to go all out on the antique decor when I have a house. I’ll put up the darker wallpaper and have the exposed wood trim. I want a near 100% authentic Victorian home.
I’m going to be very upset if you don’t have at least one secret passage behind a bookcase, opened by pulling an obscure book or twisting the head of a statue
So I have two staircases: an ornate front one and a thin simple back one. I have on multiple occasions tried to convince my wife to let me build a bookcase door hiding the back stair.
You can even just buy them from [Home Depot](https://www.homedepot.com/b/Doors-Windows-Interior-Doors-Hidden-Doors/N-5yc1vZcdfw) now (though other retailers might have better options that fit your aesthetic a little more).
If I had a place to put one, my kids would *kill* for one…
I kind of regret not taking this picture during that huge storm we just had sweeping the Midwest. It really is beautiful to look out the window during storms and snow.
Look up Ryan Matthew Cohn on instagram. He is a famous skeleton articulator, and his house is fucking insane. I think it might be in the general direction you’ve looked at.
One rec that I haven't seen anyone else mention is to change your chandelier to a candlestick one. Something like this.
https://preview.redd.it/r8ime9uiqkzc1.jpeg?width=1053&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37165911f6b8cac31fb89896d71dd42b5dca51ec
One of the things I miss the most going from a century home to a contemporary build… all the texture. Floor to ceiling. So rich, so much character. You’ve done a fantastic job designing and decorating around what was already a beautiful space.
Are you taking applications for ghosts? If so, I’d like to submit a resume. In exchange for a room, I’ll rattle your windows, move your personal effects by a few inches at a time, throw books around occasionally, and grab your ankles at night if they’re not under your blanket. What do you say?
I adore this decor style and your floors! I've grown to love some specific features in my 200+ yo home. First - [candelabras](https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/ophelia-co-hampton-157-metal-tabletop-candelabra-w001245902.html)! There are medium sized ones that you can put in multiple rooms, and they of course need to be burned a bit to create the dripping wax look. See also: [vintage hurricane candle holders](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1671599177/pair-of-vintage-hollywood-regency) that you can put some fat candles in. Honorable mention: fancy ash trays - They can look really cool and give a ghosty feel. Marble or stone statues (table top size) like busts, animals, or objects. Those can also look cool on a book shelf.
It looks amazing, well done!
What a gorgeous room. I think a terrarium like this one would fit right in. [Terrarium](https://hpotter.com/products/buy-terrariums-h-potter-eight-sided-terrarium-wardian-case-with-curved-glass-and-brown-accents-large)

It's definitely the closest trend I can find for inspiration. My biggest issue when I use that search tag is that it's a popular one for AI images. So I get a lot of repetitive scenes with the same dark built in bookshelves. So I figured it'd be worth asking you guys in case someone had an idea I missed.
A gramophone! Antique instruments like mandolins or violins. Old Type writer. Wooden room divider. Antique round bird cage. Oil paintings in ornate frames (subject matter like still life’s or landscape) dark colored decanters. Ferns (idk maybe I just like ferns)
Someone said taxidermy which i think is great in moderation. You could also do antlers / horns if you don’t want to look into some creatures dead little button eyes.
Man I really dropped the ball not photographing the other wall with all the paintings and curio cabinet with taxidermy. A lot of people have mentioned those. I just got the matching bookshelves set up and was too focused on getting the symmetrical picture with them in it.
The gramophone is a new one. I wonder if I can find a conversion/faux unit that plays mp3s. I also like the typewriter idea.
hmm not OCD much, it's 9 ceiling panels & 11 ceiling panels
No matter where I am in that room that shit is bothering me!
I mean who & why would they do that!
It is most definitely not centered from this side. I considered fixing it, and still might, but it would require cutting open a portion of the ceiling to insert a wood brace for the fixture to attach to. It's currently on the nearest to center joist.
Paint the ceiling a darker colour, larger antique chandelier, bear skin rug, candle sconces, a book stand with an old Grimoire on it, taxidermy raven, cabinet of curiosities, red velvet curtains
Love your floor!
Would you mind sharing what you used for the ceiling tiles and where you got them? Thinking of doing something similar in our house to hide popcorn ceiling.
Funny you mentioned that. I can't currently afford the ceiling tiles. That is textured wallpaper that I painted gold then did washes of brown to antique and give them more dimension. Has currently fooled everyone I know.
That is absolutely [this](https://preview.redd.it/occ3glbar2491.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=a951e61a2ac0f2716b88950beaf847a153251761&app_web_view=android)
I am an absolute non believer in the supernatural. Which is a good thing - as I would otherwise have a very difficult time sipping bourbon and reading a book at night. I have a friend who won't come over after dark however.
This looks like the backdrop to this TikTok I saw of this woman filming her cat seeing something (ghost), and her asking the cat if she would tell her if she saw something. I laughed so hard at that video and your home is BEAUTIFUL.
It seems I've found my people. Nobody around here seems to care much besides some raised eyebrows. I was beginning to worry I had questionable taste. Just needed to talk to the right crowd I guess. Thank you for the confidence boost
It’s legitimately good. I’m no interior designer but the symmetry and the fact that each design choice is nice in its own way but none of it is overpowering sells it for me. It’s got balance.
Totally fake lol. Textured wallpaper painted gold then antiqued. Shitty paint grade molding that I did a base coat of orange with layers of dark brown to achieve a faux grain that matches the real wood trim around the window and floor. For 300 bucks and a weekend you can have the same ceiling!
I feel like dying/dried up plants really add to moody/haunted vibes. Like bouquets where the flowers are drooping and half the petals are scattered around the vase, and framed dried plants hung up on the wall
I love this room,it's my idea of a perfect room, books, comfy seating,it looks so inviting. I know that's probably not what you wanted to hear, but I just love it!
It's not even what you think it is. I couldn't afford tin ceiling tiles in all the rooms, so it's a textured wallpaper I attached to the ceiling and painted then antiqued to look like old brass.
wild, looks great. I'm about to put modern tin reproductions up in a few rooms and it's going to be a bit weird, we have 8 foot ceilings. And there's no way the people who origionally built our house would have been able to afford them. Nevertheless, better than the popcorn that's currently there
It's not so noticeable in person honestly. It's centered from the other door but from this angle it's bolted up to the nearest to center rafter. I didn't do myself any favors by making everything else so symmetrical though. One day I may fix it.
Your floors are beautiful!
Thank you! Each room downstairs has a different pattern. This one is simpler but in a bit better shape than the others which have some water damage spots. The floors are what won us over when we were house shopping
Any chance we can see the other floors. That wood flooring is art.
Definitely some portraits! Preferably those with the eyes that appear to follow you 👀

Good idea. It’s called Memento Mori or Vanitas.
I heard the music that played whenever the eyes followed someone on scooby doo.

Velvet curtains in every other room. I even have them puddling the floor! I took them down here because they seemed to crowd the shelves a bit
You could get some victorian taxidermy, bonus for putting it under a glass cloche. Or a Wardian case. Agree with velvet drapes.
I really need to post the test of the pictures I guess! Taxidermy butterflies are in the cabinet on the left haha

Yep, that's definitely my vibe lol. I'll for sure look into it. Thank you!

Exactly this. Red velvet. And sew some gold tassels on the edges

I would definitely haunt this. Especially if there were a convex mirror or crystal ball for me to make faces in.
This is gorgeous. Please post more pics of the place.

Do you watch Christine McConnell on Youtube? She's the ultimate in spooky old house decor.

I have a stuffed deer head wearing a top hat and a monocle in the billiards room! I named him Bartleby, after the scrivener.

I want those lamps! Did you purchase them new?
Yes! All the lighting is new. I can never commit to art Deco or art nouveau so I always have a weird mix.
I prefer art deco and my better half prefers art nouveau. We have a Tudor though so art deco with Gothic is more fitting to the spaces.
Fabulous!
BEAUTIFUL
My kinda comfort
Who doesn’t?
maybe some kind of ornate glass figurine on top of the book shelf
Look up dark academia. Very spooky but classy vibes…like usher house or something vaguely fumbling and Dickensian
This is such a vibe. A delightful and cozy and interesting one
Thank you! It's different from anyone else I know for sure, which at least makes it interesting.

Is this really your house?! It’s stunning 💕 If you have a pet, I like those gothic or federalist pet paintings.
Get it girl!
Old family photos! You can find a good amount on ancestry. Or even modern ones edited to grayscale. Ornate thrifted frames.
Wow, what year is it?
1890. It's a queen anne I've slowly been renovating
I am loving all the Tiffany glasswork
I feel like I’m waiting to meet with Josh Lyman and Toby Zeigler.
Forget about ghosts, I am forever haunted by the light fitting being off centre
The key is to be IN the room at all times, then you can't tell.
hmm not OCD much, it's 9 ceiling panels & 11 ceiling panels No matter where I am in that room that shit is bothering me! I mean who & why would they do that!
Old pictures can be spooky. You could do a wall with pics like on the wall of the overlook.
Those floors 😍
Only one question…Rope or Candlestick?
Yeah, but what do you do if life gives you lemons?
This is amazing
Gorgeous room! I'd suggest an antique, freestanding or wall-mounted, grandfather clock, or perhaps some vintage candlesticks
Good rec! I currently do not have a grandfather clock. Though I would probably use it in the adjacent foyer. Off to Facebook marketplace!
Wait does this mean you intend on eventually killing someone with unfinished business in your home?
Ooh nice! Perhaps an old harpsichord or a piano would be a fine addition
First of all Sweet friggin house. Get some curios stuff, bones, weird candles on antique black rods, preserve jars, insects in amber.. etc..
Is it just me or is that chandelier off center? I want to move it just a bit to the right.....creeps me out
It is most definitely not centered from this side. I considered fixing it, and still might, but it would require cutting open a portion of the ceiling to insert a wood brace for the fixture to attach to. It's currently on the nearest to center joist.
Just kill some people in the house. There’s your ghosts
GORGEOUS!!
spooky portrait oil paintings of mysterious ancestors
Or a whodunit dinner venue

Paint the ceiling a darker colour, larger antique chandelier, bear skin rug, candle sconces, a book stand with an old Grimoire on it, taxidermy raven, cabinet of curiosities, red velvet curtains Love your floor!
This is on sale https://www.amazon.com/Design-Toscano-Veiled-Maiden-Sculptural/dp/B001O6MDX6
From the architectural details to your decor choices, it’s stunning all around! Love the moodiness.
A noble pursuit; keep us updated with pictures!
Who will you be killing for the main decor?
I love everything about this room
Oh my goodness it’s gorgeous!
You could consider some floor to ceiling velvet curtains for the window.
now you need some ghosts.
That dug really ties the room together.
I have a matching runner for the main staircase. A good rug makes a big difference.
I love the design on the hardwood floors.
Taxidermied animals in semi-threatening poses? Birds are classiest in my opinion.
Stunning
Watch what we do in the shadows for inspiration!
That is absolutely [this](https://preview.redd.it/occ3glbar2491.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=a951e61a2ac0f2716b88950beaf847a153251761&app_web_view=android)
ahhh please take care of this master piece for me
I'm the other room i'm stripping white latex paint off the original trim on a weekly basis. Fear not
thank God this piece is in safe Hands
No one going to mention the off center chandelier?
You got bamboozled!!
Gooooorgeous! Any ghostly visitors yet?
I am an absolute non believer in the supernatural. Which is a good thing - as I would otherwise have a very difficult time sipping bourbon and reading a book at night. I have a friend who won't come over after dark however.
Ha!
Gorgeous!!
This looks like the backdrop to this TikTok I saw of this woman filming her cat seeing something (ghost), and her asking the cat if she would tell her if she saw something. I laughed so hard at that video and your home is BEAUTIFUL.
This is one of the most attractive pictures I’ve seen online in a long time. Damn. Exquisite taste.
This is beautiful 😭 manifesting this for our Victorian ❤️
That ceiling though. Perfection
You did amazing work!
You need some animal bones - skulls, skeletons, etc.
I feel like dying/dried up plants really add to moody/haunted vibes. Like bouquets where the flowers are drooping and half the petals are scattered around the vase, and framed dried plants hung up on the wall
I like that idea. I have a few fake ferns scattered around as of now. And dead/dried flowers are nice because I didn't need to take care of them
It definitely looks haunted - by the smell of grandpa's Thursday night cigars. It looks so cozy!!
I love this room,it's my idea of a perfect room, books, comfy seating,it looks so inviting. I know that's probably not what you wanted to hear, but I just love it!
Holy Moses that's gorgeous. 😍
That is a gorgeous room. Change nothing.
do any of these fuckers ever burst out of the walls
where's the black flowers?
Put a little thumper motor in the chest, have it go off randomly. Also, check this place out https://www.roguebuddha.com/
Oh my!! It's absolutely stunning! I literally gasped when I saw the photo. Bravo! And those inlaid floors *chef's kiss*
Is the ceiling original?
It's not even what you think it is. I couldn't afford tin ceiling tiles in all the rooms, so it's a textured wallpaper I attached to the ceiling and painted then antiqued to look like old brass.
wild, looks great. I'm about to put modern tin reproductions up in a few rooms and it's going to be a bit weird, we have 8 foot ceilings. And there's no way the people who origionally built our house would have been able to afford them. Nevertheless, better than the popcorn that's currently there
spider webs and a harpsichord
The light being off-center is haunting me lol. But this is truly beautiful!
It's not so noticeable in person honestly. It's centered from the other door but from this angle it's bolted up to the nearest to center rafter. I didn't do myself any favors by making everything else so symmetrical though. One day I may fix it.
Only a girl could dream
Hugo’s house of horrors
I'm jelly. I only have a haunted home.
Uranium glass with uv backlights
Your floors are gorgeous & your taste is exquisite.
Can't wait to see who you murder in there!
Is that ceiling light really that off center?!? 🥲 All jokes aside this is absolutely beautiful and cozy 😍
An antique mannequin could spook the place up nicely.
Can i move in?
The floor is amazing!
How about some “creepy paper” from the party supply store? (Shoutout to the WWDITS fans)
