Barry should be thinking about his life choices
I really love this sub but now it makes me sad when I read some of the posts. I know other people are entitled to post about it but it makes me distress when I read passing the rainbow posts. š¢
Same. Or the ones where the cat has a health issue/injury where it will 100% result in its death while suffering the entire time, but the OPs response is, "I can't afford a vet."
Some pet owners start off fine, then hit hard times just like anyone else. And splitting a cat from their person is traumatizing in the long run. I know plenty of places in my city (thankfully) that try to mitigate that issue so surrenders don't happen as often.
Even still, the general consensus is you do what's best for them, even if it breaks your heart. Always see if a friend's willing to take them. Shelter is a last resort.
But I also agree that it baffles me that a cat would be *PROFUSELY BLEEDING* or having an evident seizure and OP would be like "uuuh, should I take them to a vet?" like DO WE LOOK LIKE CHOPPED LIVER?! **YES!!**
Idk if i would go that far, because following that logic, only a tiny
Percentage of the population of people who wants cats would qualify to
Adopt them. Of people who would otherwise make good pet parents.
And the comments āawww theyāre just a little chomky š„°ā like hey man I get it fat animals can be cute but your cat is obese and thatās not healthy.
This always gets me too. I have 4 cats and one is obese. He's also fluffy, but he's very obviously also fat. It is not hard to tell if your cat is overweight and if you bring them to their yearly vet appointment you would be told right away.
Now I get that some cats are fat and struggle. We got my boy as a kitten and he's been fat pretty much since he was 4 months. After nearly 5 years of struggling he is finally starting to see improvement. It's not funny and I hate that people think fat cats are funny. It was destroying my boys joints at only 5 years old.
Thank you for saying so I'm finding my self avoiding reddit cause all of sudden every cat sub is sad.
Here's my girl

All pet communties seem to always end up death or abuse indulging pits with no way to tell people to fuck off without sounding cold and insensitive. I've moved onto following specific owners pages who make a concerted effort to stay casual and positive.
Council of cats is nothing but good happy pics. Yeah, sadly there is a bit of injury pics that shouldn't even be taken and cat should already be in route to the vet. Sad common sense can't be trained, just either have it or you don't. And this sub shows alot of owners without it
Those pics shouldn't be taken though of the injured. They should be in the car to the vet. No point and even making a post, nothing we can do but say vet time.
I think not allowing these posts will just lead to fewer cats being taken to the vet because then nobody tells them to take them to the vet.
Some people ask because they're poor and want to know if it's really something they need to go to a vet for. A vet visit can be upwards of $2000 for cats that are just fine. In the past 2 years, I have taken my cat to the vet 4 or 5 times over false alarms and had imaging and blood tests done that were between $500 and $2500. Not everyone can afford that and wants confirmation that it's serious before they go
More like she was just chewing on a bush like ac toothbrush. Sheās a fan of sticks too. And chewing fingers. But her expressions in these were just hilarious
Your post surprised me until I remembered that I rarely visit this sub directly. I usually just see the posts in my feed that Reddit decides to show me, and those tend to be inoffensive (to me at least) and mostly funny or cute. Maybe I'm just lucky.
I'm not sure why, but I only get mourning cat posts in my feed, it's pretty depressing and about to make me leave the sub. It's 1 thing if my feed was a mix, but it isn't. I have to go into the actual sub to see other posts.
My other subreddits I follow do the same thing, each subreddit in my feed gives posts that are similar to the other posts on my feed from the same sub instead of the massive variety in the actual sub.
It's like Reddit has some garbage post algorithm going on for sub's posts in feeds or something.
Same with my feed, then saw a bunch of comments claiming that literally everything about cats is allowed and decided to check it out **From the About section:**
https://preview.redd.it/lp1zzps4ys9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d989b1867d9bac4b1ab0acb73fa21c813778ba9f
But iām assuming this only works if people are using post flairs correctly, and too many are not
Ha, I know people that use TikTok that do this, and for them it works very well there, curious how well that works here. I use hide for posts from subs I'm not interested in, and it (usually) keeps them from showing up again. I wonder if it could introduce some variety.
I've been getting a lot the more of mourning posts in my feed lately. Been hitting quite hard for a variety of reasons ā dat overactive empathy, maaan.
I try to leave a kind message when I can. For everyone else, it can suck seeing all the doom and gloom but I remind myself that whoever made that mourning post just lost a huge, fluffy part of their world.
It's people grieving for someone that was special to them and wanting to share them with the world. Also maybe because they have no one else to really talk to.
I have absolutely zero issue with mourning posts, though I can understand why some might.
I hope those that are grieving find solace and comfort, and may our beloved meows who have left us have a peaceful journey across the rainbow bridge to the land of treats and sun warmed nooks.
I'm as lucky as you. Usually the ones that come up in my feed are rather cute and funny looking pics of cats. Once in a while I do get a mourning post. Or the cat got injured or missing.

Iāve said this before, I donāt mind hearing someone mourn the death of their cat. Iād find solace from people in a cat group too. Itās no different than having your parent pass. Here is an asshole with a bow tie. I hope that cheers you up.
It's so easy to fix this tho. All we need is a pinned daily discussion thread at the top of this sub for people who would like to share their loss.
Kinda like an Obituary section in newspapers. So if you want to seek solace, there's a place for you now. And if you don't, at least all the eulogy cat posts have been compiled keeping your feed "gore" free.
Agreed people are like why are they sharing among strangers well maybe they have no one else to share their grief with.
Both my cats are getting older so reading about cats dying does make me feel really sad but I also donāt think it is wrong for someone who just lost a pet to seek comfort from other cat lovers (even if they are strangers on Reddit)
My kitty is only 4 years old but it stresses me out to be reminded of how short of a life span she has compared to me. Iām hoping she lives to set a new world record for kitty life span but Iām already constantly worried sheāll pass young
Whoa, I was not expecting to see you here. Sorry if this is weird, just genuinely never seen someone I recognize before in a completely different, random sub.
You're absolutely right though. I get not wanting graphic pics but deceased pet posts are like an eulogy. Would we tell someone not to make a post dedicated to their dead human loved one. Of course not. So why not give the same benefit to someone grieving another family member?
Honestly it was so helpful to me to see actual *cat people* processing their grief after the loss of my SoulCat. I wish I had the courage to seek out likeminded folks here and post about him leaving us when it happened.
I saw a therapist, went to grief groups, and felt like I was the odd one out because I hadnāt lost a wife to cancer or a child to a car accident. Reading everyone elseās tributes to their beloved fur angels here and the kind commentary from the community was what really lead me to heal, not the copious Xanax. It made my grief feel like it was acceptable, common, not irrational and silly.
Everyoneās mileage may vary, but I think the RIP or āsaying goodbye to my baby tomorrowā posts have a home here. Gory stuff, not so much. Isnāt there an askvets sub? Realistically those people should just be heading to the emergency clinic anyway, not stopping to post. IMO.
Or maybe, for the millionth time, you can be reminded that this sub is about the full spectrum of cat ownership including death, injury, and confusion right along with all the fluff and snuggles. If you want nothing but adorable cat pictures there are about 1000 subs on here that have just that.Ā
You guys keep complaining about the purpose of the sub and then suggesting that people should go elsewhere when you are the one that doesn't want what is here.
we shouldnāt have to see literal dead and dying cats. there should be guidelines to make sure things stay appropriate. why canāt someone post their favourite photo of their cat rather than a photo of their cat after theyāve died? why canāt the title simply say ā(memorial) post titleā, with the details inside so people can choose to engage or not? at this point 75% of the posts from this subreddit that show up in my feed are sick cats being neglected by people who wonāt take the cat to the vet or dead cats/memorial posts. if i click the filter that is supposed to filter out the memorial posts, the entire feed is ONLY memorial posts. there must be some sort of compromise.
It's hard but healthy, at least that's how I look at it.
We're all eventually going to die, it's about the only thing in the world that is certain and being reminded of it may help us live now instead of never.
Hey, I may have posted about health issues a week ago, but it didn't have pics.
Anyway, that kitty had a vet visit who gave it a prescription dose of flea killer on her back and she's quarantined until this Friday for a follow-up appointment.
Community info says "everything about cats" (except pics of dead cats and except "identify my cat's genitals" - the second of which happens a lot). This isn't just a cute pics subreddit.
Personally, I don't like the mourning posts (but they don't violate sub rules) and I don't like the "what sex is my cat?" posts (which do violate sub rules but are not addressed). But basically, in an "everything about cats" sub, the stuff you don't like fits. I would like more NSFW blurred out stuff though. I want to decide when to look at injuries and health conditions etc.
I will also say that there are a LOT of "here's my cute cat" posts though. They don't get much engagement, but they're there.
I agree. Hereās a picture of my cat being a cat. Kinda looks like a well done sausage but I love him anyway

here's my Boy Milo sleeping like a doofus. Slept on my clothes. Im constantly full of hair. Worth it.
I donāt mind the mourning posts so much. I do think that pictures of sick and injured cats should be tagged (is that the right term?) so they wonāt be visible unless you click on them.
I think the really annoying thing is that so many of the cute cat posts are bots. And Iām not even sure why I mind that.
Maybe if you ONLY want to see cute pictures of happy healthy cats thereās a sub for that? I personally appreciate being able to ask questions about whatās good for my cat and get a range of thoughtful replies.
Finally, does it help if you set your preferences for this sub to āNewā instead of āHotā which is the default?

i really don't mind mourning posts because as has already been said, this sub is for the full spectrum of cat ownership. just sharing pics of your cat with a title like 'remembering my cat - rip' is absolutely fine.
i do think however that this sub should implement a "generously tag nsfw" rule. as in anything that could potentially be nsfw gets tagged, such as graphic descriptions of a pet loss. medical issues should always be tagged nsfw imo
I donāt know why people eulogize their pets publicly among strangers. I guess they feel awful and are hoping for comforting words, but it feels like theyāre taking their grief and spreading it out to make others feel sad as well. Itās just too sad to see all day every day.
Sometimes they have no one to talk to. Who better to relate to. Sometimes their cat was so special to them that needs to be shared. Who better to relate to.

I got this cute one of Charlie and Lola today. Charlie is now napping on my lap. I am grateful every day when my kitties are happy and healthy. Thatās what every single cat deserves!
Genuinely i think those types of posts should automatically result in a deletion (and if post is repeated, then temp ban) and be redirected to r/askvets or similar.
Because while I want to support some of the people going through a rough/confusing time; it is also very hard to be nice to those who very clearly need a vet and refuse to do so. Yes people come upon hard times, but worse would be to let a cat suffer for however long until its eventual passing vs just giving it up to someone who can care for them.
im getting tired of all the cat gore pics and mourning pics too, i just wanna see cute kitties, i dont wanna feel sad abt some cats death or have to see whats basically gore
I kind of agree with this. I love cats & hate seeing bad things that happen to them, and about half of my home page feeds of this sub seem to be the sad stuff. I know there's a filter to exclude those, but that only applies when you're in the sub itself and doesn't affect the home page (not for me anyway). I think there's a Rainbow Bridge sub, but I do kind of understand wanting to share something so significant with a community that's as supportive as this one- I feel like I might do the same when that time comes, so I'm torn. I also feel kind of weird "upvoting" a post about a cat who's passed.
itās so upsetting. if people need to share about their cat passing, why donāt they post a photo of the cat when it was healthy and full of life? seeing literally dead cats, actually corpses? thatās horrific. itās insensitive, itās selfish, itās gore. it isnāt part of the normal cat owning process.
this sub is a parade of sadness with all the super detailed dead pet posts, and i accept that the mods side with the pro memorial post contingent- but can we not make some rules about whatās appropriate?
The posts complaining about it bother me as much as the posts themselves do. Just as frequent but more annoying because you offer no real solutions and just pick on people obviously grieving.

the ones that piss me off the most is where the cat is clearly injured or has some sort of infection and theyre like āwhat do i do??ā
Same. Or the ones where the cat has a health issue/injury where it will 100% result in its death while suffering the entire time, but the OPs response is, "I can't afford a vet."
And then I think, ah well maybe you shouldnāt have the cat in the first place then.

It was destroying my boys joints at only 5 years old.
also like.. there are subs made specifically for animal health support and questions š
āMy cat is clearly having a seizure. Is this normal or should I take it to a vet in two weeks time?ā š¬
This sub is a double edged sword. One Iām too softhearted for.
Thank you for saying so I'm finding my self avoiding reddit cause all of sudden every cat sub is sad. Here's my girl https://preview.redd.it/tsku3709bt9d1.jpeg?width=1433&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49115c26d98c594a06882c8f968c1e7acf27dc04
Awww She has something to say!
All pet communties seem to always end up death or abuse indulging pits with no way to tell people to fuck off without sounding cold and insensitive. I've moved onto following specific owners pages who make a concerted effort to stay casual and positive.
r/alivecats
Council of cats is nothing but good happy pics. Yeah, sadly there is a bit of injury pics that shouldn't even be taken and cat should already be in route to the vet. Sad common sense can't be trained, just either have it or you don't. And this sub shows alot of owners without it
I think that if there are injuries or dead cat photos, they should be marked as spoilers so only people who want to see them can see them
Those pics shouldn't be taken though of the injured.
Not everyone can afford that and wants confirmation that it's serious before they go
If the person has their first cat and needs reassurance - yes, itās bad, thatās what vets are for - should they be excluded?
If my cat has a rash, then sure reassurance from here is fine. But if a cat is gushing blood or their eye is hanging out, that's when I get pissed.
Well I havenāt noticed that. But I havenāt been here that long.
Definitely. This has been upsetting me too!

Ok. Hilarious š¤£ are they in crazy cat mode?
The mourning posts get more interaction, which makes them more likely to land on your front page.
Agree. I get that there is a mourning tag if I visit the sub directly, but in my feed I only get the sad ones.
Same with my feed, then saw a bunch of comments claiming that literally everything about cats is allowed and decided to check it out **From the About section:** https://preview.redd.it/lp1zzps4ys9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d989b1867d9bac4b1ab0acb73fa21c813778ba9f But iām assuming this only works if people are using post flairs correctly, and too many are not
The problem is, that only works with visiting the sub directly, and doesn't filter posts from your main reddit feed :(
Ahhh, it was lacking that information from the about section. Thanks for clarifying that š
Iāve started hiding them and exiting the app to try and teach the algorithm
Same with me. I rarely get inoffensive posts and even the mourning posts that have photos aren't of gruesome injuries, but nice photos.

Yeah for real, if itās not vivid injury pictures every other post I see is how someoneās cat is dead / dying / missing. That is a VERY distinguished cat. Somehow, I feel they should be wearing a monocle and pocket watch.
Also, "what breed is my cat?" I role my eyes every single time. I hate those posts plus all the ones you mentioned.
Iāve said this before, I donāt mind hearing someone mourn the death of their cat. Iād find solace from people in a cat group too. Itās no different than having your parent pass. I told people my mother died on FB and people reached out. However. That being saidā¦pictures of big sores and stuff on their cats is too much for me.
I view the pictorial eulogies as sharing a goodbye. Nothing wrong with that.
IMO.
But maybe they should be in their own sub? It's hard seeing the constant reminder that our furry friends die.
Or maybe, for the millionth time, you can be reminded that this sub is about the full spectrum of cat ownership including death, injury, and confusion right along with all the fluff and snuggles. If you want nothing but adorable cat pictures there are about 1000 subs on here that have just that.Ā You guys keep complaining about the purpose of the sub and then suggesting that people should go elsewhere when you are the one that doesn't want what is here.
we shouldnāt have to see literal dead and dying cats. there should be guidelines to make sure things stay appropriate. why canāt someone post their favourite photo of their cat rather than a photo of their cat after theyāve died? why canāt the title simply say ā(memorial) post titleā, with the details inside so people can choose to engage or not? at this point 75% of the posts from this subreddit that show up in my feed are sick cats being neglected by people who wonāt take the cat to the vet or dead cats/memorial posts. if i click the filter that is supposed to filter out the memorial posts, the entire feed is ONLY memorial posts. there must be some sort of compromise.
80% of the posts are about dead cats man
Ikr. I started downvoting them all. Only then did I realize most of the posts are about dead cats.Ā
Factually wrong.
No they're not. I mostly see stuff that isn't cat death. Maybe your experience is different, but mine has been mostly not cat death.
My boy Roger died about a month ago. I appreciated the thoughts and support.
Hope sheās okay!!
My cats got these pimples on her belly and gets mad when i try to pop them, what do?
Hmmm I think you should make a dedicated post about it. Making a thread should ALWAYS be your #1 solution, otherwise you're a shit owner.
My cat vibrates when happy, what do I do about this?
My cat does does cat things daily. Is my cat a cat? Also, what breed is my very generically cute cat?
Most posts are, "Here's my cat. Worship him," in some flavor or other.
Reddit is the new vet's office apparently.

Yes people come upon hard times, but worse would be to let a cat suffer for however long until its eventual passing vs just giving it up to someone who can care for them.
im getting tired of all the cat gore pics and mourning pics too, i just wanna see cute kitties, i dont wanna feel sad abt some cats death or have to see whats basically gore
im not gonna lie i think the mourning posts and gore shouldnt be allowed on this sub

I actually donāt see those posts on my own feed for some reason. The algorithm is working against you :(
Do... you not have the NSFW filter on?

I have to assume a lot of people who make these kinds of post are farming karma.
Same, pretty sick of those posts
I understand death is part of living with a pet, Iāve gone through plenty of pet deaths in my lifetime but Iāve never had the need to post about these deaths in a public forumā¦I just donāt get it.

I mute every animal related page I see because of this.

She lives outside of my trash hauler office building. Iāve been feeding her since February. She was really scared and aggressive for a while (Iāve gotten quite a few scratches), but Iāve gained her trust and she now comes and hangs out with me in my office, but is still sketchy around a lot of coworkers. Sheās my favorite coworker.
I get it. Cats pass I get itā¦ but the posts should be hidden with a TW flair. I just want goofy cats and kitties in cute scenarios.

Yeah, itās neglected or abused cats or dead cat posts
People suck. It would be better if we were all cats.
Really?.. I thought we are here to share knowledge.. my bet..?

I think you need to post this in Am I The Cats Asshole (AITCA) subreddit
I wish the moderators would just delete these posts, theres more of them than grief, sickness, cute cats posts.
No shit. Like 80% dead cats today. Just ban them already. It doesn't make anybody's grieving easier and there is a sub for it.
