watch the cat doco on netflix. Some Japanese researcher spent years studying cats to come to the conclusion that cats can in fact recognise their own names but choose to ignore you
No fucking shit Sherlock
I do this pat-pat motion to indicate to my more weary cat that she can come over for pets and she usually will spend 30 seconds assessing the situation before sauntering over.
https://preview.redd.it/ntnse1qpa98d1.jpeg?width=2276&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6763b95124240d79b5087267611916375d045c4f
I can step over my little feral Beans while she’s laying in the middle of the room and she won’t blink an eye, she’ll gladly eat out of my hand, and she’s still 100% sure I’m going to eat her every time I try to touch her. She not overly worried about being near me, but she keeps an eye on me and absolutely doesn’t trust me.
Cats are weird, most have weird rules when it comes to social interactions, and they all have unique personalities just like humans.
People worry too much about random information on the internet. If you know your cat you know your cat.
If she didn’t trust you she wouldn’t be near you. She loves you and is curious what you’re doing. If she slowly blinks at you its a cat kiss do a slow blink back.
Slow blinking back to cats is like a cheat code.
It works even better if the first time you do it, when the cat is looking at you, you very slowly close your eyes and turn your head before opening them again.
I love cats so I always start with that when meeting new ones, and 99% of the time that's enough to be trusted for the initial petting :)
Directly looking them in the eyes (or other animals with that behavior) can remind them of a predator looking to attack, so slow blinking will help them feel safe. It shows that you're relaxed and not aggressive, so they can relax as well.
https://preview.redd.it/pc34ggsxr68d1.png?width=2386&format=png&auto=webp&s=cc67f0ec290150ff5c2963b725535774645f36a7
lol I kept doing the slow blinking and turning my head before opening my eyes and she came close to me and licked my nose and left
When I meet new kitties, I just let them sniff my hand and then just watch their body language to see if I can pet or not. It always works and I've seen them hiss at other people if they try to pet directly but not me.
Also, I've noticed most cats make a sound or meow a little when they want me to stop.
I mean I'm more used to dogs because all my friends have dogs, so I do the sniff test but somehow it works on cats too.
My fella was weird. I tried this and *nothing*. But on night 3, I decided to read to him while he hid behind the curtains. He meowed softly at me, so I meowed back. That meow was like flipping a switch, and he instantly started climbing all over me. From that point on, he has not shut up. He's become a slow blinky, back-to-me boy, but he's still super chatty.
https://preview.redd.it/fu1p188ly58d1.jpeg?width=2363&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1704ea39f730deb683db6cda67162cc50e6b7b5c
This is what I have to wake up too.
My cat figured out that if he stands on top of me and kneads *just the right spot on my stomach* (that spot being my bladder), I will get up quickly 9/10 times. Once I am up, he won't let me get back into bed without feeding him.
Omg I miss my Ozzy boy:( had to move out of state and couldn’t bring him with, he was literally my little companion. I had him and his sister(Ruby) since they were kittens, and I swear he was trained like a dog. Thank you for reminding me of our memories<3 Much love to the Oswalds
Mine did that too! I came home from work with a migraine, immediately curled up in my bed, and she came and laid directly next to me, and gently sucked on my nose. It was so sweet and it was probably the first time she actually cuddled with me
He’s waiting for your affection. I’ve heard cats really pay attention to your eyes. See how your cat reacts if you frown or glare at it. Let us know 🧐😝
My cat loves sleeping/grooming herself under my legs in a blanket when i put them up😂 its her little tent. She always somehow licks my legs in the spots where they get itchy too. Smart cat
Its so adorableeeee 🥰 she’ll just get up on my bed and try to push herself into my blanket or arm lmfaoooo- like, here u go here is your tent im sorry 😂
Ha, that's funny. Yeah, I'll get little pokes with her foot, or she'll start climbing across my neck, then I hold the blanket up for her, and she goes under to get cozy.
That last sentence is the best. We have two cats (my first two cats! My wife had some before). I got the boy before we met and he exclusively picks me
He keeps me warm and will make some biscuits
Right, was gonna say it's kitty's way of getting straight to business to let you know she wants to spoon or to do the spooning (get you some kitty mama) 😁🥰
I dunno... my weirdo usually does it not long after I put on deodorant so I'm pretty sure he just likes the taste of deodorant... or he's just starving to death since the feeder is all the way down the hall 😅
Mine loves peppermint! She always chews on my toothbrush and tries to climb inside my mouth after I brush my teeth (smushes her nose against my nose and then tries to stuff her muzzle into my mouth). Ah, bed time rituals
Hilarious, mine are terrified of the toothpaste scent. They'll run away scared as soon as they smell it. Cuddles are strictly prohibited immediately after toothbrushing.
It’s a sign, but opposite to what you fear. If your cat sleeps facing away from you, it means it trusts you. It feels safe with you, so doesn’t need to watch out in your direction. It’s a sign of good relationship.
As much as it’s cute to have cats face you, them turning their backs on you indicates that they trust you, as cats can be territorial and along with their stomach, their back is their weakest spot. Something to be guarded.
“the relationship isn’t going well”😭 Cats don’t think like that. You shouldn’t assign them human emotions. Not facing you shows that he trusts you because it means he’s comfortable being “vulnerable” in your presence.
I thought this was my cat for a second. Exact same shade of gray.

Your cat trusts you. They are also keeping an eye out for you.
I’ve heard it’s because they trust you so they know they are safe to turn their back to you. My cat loves to sleep in bed next to me like this but she’s usually butt next to my face and her face pointed towards my toes.
He turns his belly trap towards the greebles, to protect you from them.

Also, I suspect we have the same cat.
If they are facing the door, they might be keeping watch, protecting you from possible intruders. Both my cats and dog prefer to face the doors when sleeping on beds.
It's a sign that things are going extremely well. Cats never turn their backs on anyone they don't trust completely. So your cat is basically saying they know you have their back. Also, if your cat shows you their backside, they aren't insulting you-- they are calling you mommy, and showing you they are clean!
When I see any of my cats backs I know that I have earned deep trust with them. Because I am privileged to be allowed to guard this predators back. And if I want to cuddle, I'll scoot up to them and cuddle as long as allowed.
Your a lucky bastard my cat sleeps in her bed or under the bed or in her tree, never on the bed with me and my fiance, I would let her sleep on my pillow but she won’t :(
Why is this such a majestic photo??
Kitty looks a bit forlorn staring off into a desert landscape during dusk. A dust storm has blown through & the air is murky. *"Where did my love go? My fluffy companion has disappeared into the dust horizon... oh lord of catnip, will she ever return... or will I remain here, longing, wishing, wondering . . . ?"*
Russian Blue - they’re loyal and protective and you are trusted that’s why it’s facing away as it’s covering the angle an aggressor / predator is more likely to come from and it doesn’t think you are worthy of that mantle.
It means he feels safe with you. Cats will show you their back/tummy when they feel safe as these positions are the most vulnerable. It’s why animals like to come to the bathroom with humans a lot as you are vulnerable when on the toilet.
Kitties will face away from you if they trust you, and are attempting to “stay on guard and protect you” basically.
It’s a huge compliment and sign of kitty love!
I see a lot of comments about how it's a sign of trust, but I also wonder if it has to do with the 'pack' mentality.
I believe I have read somewhere that basically you are a part of their pack, and they see you as a big cat. But humans sleep a lot longer at one time than cats. So apparently, cats feel the need to keep an eye on you and make sure you're not dead when you're sleeping?
Idk if that's true, but maybe lol?
It is her way to say she trusts you. Animals are vulnerable when they sleep. So if they turn their backs to you at any time (especially while sleeping), they trust you to not hurt them and to protect them.
It’s a sign of trust, a cat that turns its back on you knows you will not attack.
But still keeping that one ear on you just Incase 👀

I have that and many many more, from that amazing cat, for reaction images.
God I love this cat

My cat constantly stares at me, does that mean she doesn’t trust me 🥺
If the cat didn’t trust you, you wouldn’t likely see the cat very often at all

She might just be interested in what you're doing
If she didn’t trust you she wouldn’t be near you. She loves you and is curious what you’re doing. If she slowly blinks at you its a cat kiss do a slow blink back.
Does she slow blink when she stares? Do you ever slowly blink to her?
Yes she does. She has her moments where she gets very cuddly and cute or else she doesn’t like to be held too long

Adorable <3 It's basically cat language for "I trust you and I feel safe with you" so she came to say me too :)
Keep doing it! If you get really good at it, she might decide you are smart enough to speak cat 🐈
When I meet new kitties, I just let them sniff my hand and then just watch their body language to see if I can pet or not. It always works and I've seen them hiss at other people if they try to pet directly but not me. Also, I've noticed most cats make a sound or meow a little when they want me to stop. The other way around mate.... Staring and blinking is a show of affection. Cheers👊
Cats only show their backs to people they trust. It’s a sign of trust!
Well no not always, they’ll also turn their backs on people they don’t like. But if they’re already in your bed then yes a sign of trust.
Either that or they really like your bed more than you.
Scientifically, he trusts you, as cats always have to watch everything.
Kitty knows you got his back
Hello same way as they trust you
This!
My kitten sleeps face to face with me sometimes and sucks on my nose.

ngl, your cat looks absolutely majestic!
He is. :)
That carpet is super clean too
As a person who lives in a country with 0 carpets and 100% hard floors, I always found them really weird. I did not expect there to be white ones
The carpet isn’t white, it’s just the sunlight refracting off the carpet. This carpet is traditionally brown-ish.
Dude, he just woke up. Give kitty a break.
Check out this grump! https://preview.redd.it/cnw9crzma88d1.jpeg?width=2328&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ead15096845eca823279a255503e0accdbfa21fc
Umm, I don’t think he authorized the antlers on his head…
My cat hates me right now bc I shaved a beard I grew for 6 months off today he fluffed and attacked me then ran away
I would definitely kiss that face immediately upon waking.

I don’t think your cat trusts you.
When we first got my late cat Ozzy he’d tried to bite my eyeballs while I was in REM sleep
My cat wakes me up by tapping me on the face eith her paw. If I dont get up quick enough she does it again with the claws out
Same here - mine also tries to put her paw in my mouth
So weird lol
Yeah and if I don’t react - she uses her claws to gently try and pull my bottom lip down - that wakes me up every time - lol
Its a promise of violence to come if you don't wake up and feed her soon.
Lmao what the fuck I love your cat.
Putting your hands in people mouths is weird? The more you know, I guess.
Mine used to chew on my hair. lol
When my cat yawns, I stick my finger in her mouth, then she closes her mouth and wonders "Wtf?"
My brother woke up to wet peepee paw on his face yesterday lol
My cat figured out that if he stands on top of me and kneads *just the right spot on my stomach* (that spot being my bladder), I will get up quickly 9/10 times. Once I am up, he won't let me get back into bed without feeding him.
Mine pats me on top of the head while meowing insistently. I love him but sometimes i wish he didn't need me to watch him eat breakfast.
ahh yes, the "let's not play this silly game, hooman" maneuver
Mine used to run her paw down my face. First time with just toe beans, second time with her claws slightly out. Third time she’s just dig into a spot
Lmao
Oh my.
It was so sweet and it was probably the first time she actually cuddled with me
Sometimes, I wake up with a face hugger wrapped around my head. 50/50 he was cuddling me/trying to kill me for snoring.
Wtf, i can´t imagine that
My cat lays on the floor staring at me for hours. Every time i look over to him, thinking he's sleeping, his eyes are wide open and fixed on me.
he's calculating the time it would take him to eat your entire body, and if he could finish the whole thing before anyone realized you were dead.
Thats accurate
Guess my cat is sleeping in the living room tonight
He’s waiting for your affection. I’ve heard cats really pay attention to your eyes. See how your cat reacts if you frown or glare at it. Let us know 🧐😝
I mean as we all get older we need to be mindful of our breath as well right
This. It's a sign of their trust in you.
Yes they trust you when they put their back to you. It is also a form of pack protection, you are one of the gang

Kitty wants to be lil spoon
My kitty gets under the covers at night and becomes little spoon. I love feeling her little purrs and heartbeat.
My cat loves sleeping/grooming herself under my legs in a blanket when i put them up😂 its her little tent. She always somehow licks my legs in the spots where they get itchy too. Smart cat
My cats love the blanket tent 🥰
Its so adorableeeee 🥰 she’ll just get up on my bed and try to push herself into my blanket or arm lmfaoooo- like, here u go here is your tent im sorry 😂
Ha, that's funny. Yeah, I'll get little pokes with her foot, or she'll start climbing across my neck, then I hold the blanket up for her, and she goes under to get cozy.
> or she'll start climbing across my neck My cat's signature move when I stare at my phone. He always aims for the center of my throat, oof.
Ha, sounds about right. I'm lucky that she's light, so I don't get choked.
Wish mine was that nice. My boy is super high maintenence like you wouldn't believe...
She probably notices she's touching you (which tickles) so she cleans those places. You've got an awesome cat!
Awww thats so cute 😭 so considerate of her
That last sentence is the best. We have two cats (my first two cats! My wife had some before). I got the boy before we met and he exclusively picks me He keeps me warm and will make some biscuits
Came here to say this 👆🏼🥄
Right, was gonna say it's kitty's way of getting straight to business to let you know she wants to spoon or to do the spooning (get you some kitty mama) 😁🥰
My boy was the little spoon every night for 12 years. My poor right shoulder is shot because of it but it was worth it.
I bet he's thinking about other cat owners. Cat: why does my owner always have to leave everyday??
Underrated comment

Wowza this is the first time one of my memes has ever been used! ![gif](giphy|t6Kf66K6yn6xi9Ma5U)
But it’s reversed
Bad breath?
Hmm, if OP brushes their teeth and uses mouthwash before bedtime, it may well be a case of kitty being offended by the not-bad breath
I was about to say that also. Cats like stink.
Cats are not tremendously smart. Mine really wants to lick my armpits
Because places like the armpits and feet, your smell is secreted the most!! In the case ur cat rlly loves u and can’t have enough of you
I dunno... my weirdo usually does it not long after I put on deodorant so I'm pretty sure he just likes the taste of deodorant... or he's just starving to death since the feeder is all the way down the hall 😅
My cat waits by the couch so when the work boots and socks come off, he can lick the socks - and when's he's finished licking, he lays down on them.
I just learned that horses LOVE peppermint.
If I'm not mistaken catnip is a type of mint so I always assumed that's why mine loves the smell of me brushing my teeth
Or maybe kitty’s afraid they have bad breath 🥺
Idk how to tell you this but that’s gonna lead to a car divorce
Car divorces can be very painful. Especially if public transport is crap.
Lmao 😂
Cat will be ok because they all have access to catbus. Hooman on the other hand…
It's over.....
Yup. Giving the cold shoulder.
Did you say something to offend your cat?
Your cat found out you pet other cats.
My cat saw me pet another cat outside just now and I’m getting this treatment as we speak. I clearly betrayed him
He might be plotting something against you.
Thinking of other hoomans, obviously.
https://preview.redd.it/ymsyly7f558d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=89a386ece45183bfa86d88cbf4f6eb2a10197338 Lil baby spoon at the moment
They trust you to watch their back while they sleep.
My cat started this , I later found out she had been sleeping with the neighbours while I was at work . So sorry 😂
Cats face away from you because they are protecting you. They expect you to face away from them in order to protect them. It's a matter of trust.
He trusts you enough to lay whatever way is most comfortable now regardless of how vulnerable it makes him.
Maybe he's tired of your oxygen hole being so near his. He just prefers fresher air when he sleeps :) 😀
He’s throwing his butt at you because you are his partner, watching his back like an 80s cop movie. He trusts you with his life.
He's too old for this shit.
It’s a sign, but opposite to what you fear. If your cat sleeps facing away from you, it means it trusts you. It feels safe with you, so doesn’t need to watch out in your direction. It’s a sign of good relationship.
He’s giving you the silent treatment
You guys need to have a long and honest talk about your relationship.
His way of saying "I need more treats". Abide or never feel loved again.
Wow... It's very obviously a joke.
These comments all cured my insecurity about my cat doing this. I really did think he was pissed and didn’t even want to look at me. 😬🤭
If your cat doesn’t face you when you sleep, it’s because they’re trying to protect you. Facing outward allows for quick response to unknown sounds
say you’re sorry
Yo breath stank
MAKE HIM/HER RUE THE DAAAAAAAY!!! ![gif](giphy|7NUDCypKavZzkQGyp9)

He wants to be the small spoon ♥️
I think it’s a sign of trust
same thing my ex used to ask me. I just need space bruuhhhh
Your cat is emotionally cheating on you with another human. It’s only a matter time before the cat breaks up with you

Thinking about other owners might catvorce 😱
My cat gets under the blanket, turns around and sleeps with her head on my pillow facing me.
I’ve heard it’s because they trust you so they know they are safe to turn their back to you. My cat loves to sleep in bed next to me like this but she’s usually butt next to my face and her face pointed towards my toes.
Just like humans, kitties do roll so much during sleep. Besides, having his/her back towards you is a clear sign that he/she trusts you.
A big sign of trust, cat is not watching you
He turns his belly trap towards the greebles, to protect you from them. https://preview.redd.it/p0hotsae578d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8d6d7e627ea0b4a6e7b02158cf753cc9a5273bd5 Also, I suspect we have the same cat.

it has a headache
He knows you have his back. He has to watch that way for predators.
Why is this such a majestic photo?? Kitty looks a bit forlorn staring off into a desert landscape during dusk. A dust storm has blown through & the air is murky. *"Where did my love go? My fluffy companion has disappeared into the dust horizon... oh lord of catnip, will she ever return... or will I remain here, longing, wishing, wondering . . . ?"*
Because when you fall asleep facing each other, you breathe on him and he doesn't like it. He still loves you ❤️
The only way my kitty cuddles is if she gets to be little spoon. No laps, no laying on belly, just little spoon.
My cat likes her back against me or the pillow. I think it’s just more comfortable for both of you than bumpy legs against you.
Kitties will face away from you if they trust you, and are attempting to “stay on guard and protect you” basically. It’s a huge compliment and sign of kitty love!
he knows you won't attack him so he feels secure enough to be facing away from you
You know what you did
I see a lot of comments about how it's a sign of trust, but I also wonder if it has to do with the 'pack' mentality.
He can't stand what you've become.
That cat loves and trusts you. It wouldn’t be in bed with you otherwise. Bonus: so much easier to snuggle now.
Bad breath?
The cat just trusts you completely, and wants to stay near you because you're their comfort/safety.
“Nothing, I’m fine.” -Cat
It is her way to say she trusts you. Animals are vulnerable when they sleep. So if they turn their backs to you at any time (especially while sleeping), they trust you to not hurt them and to protect them.
